  • "Lovely cosy cottage in an idyllic location."

Homemade cake and biscuits on arrival were a nice touch. Negatives were the slight smell of damp on arrival, the bathroom was very small, and the bed not very comfy. There was also no lockable storage for bikes even though this was advertised when booking, but luckily we bought our own bike chains just in case, and were able to store them in the game's room during our stay. The TV was temperamental, it would not always turn on, so we had to unplug it at the socket to reset it. Apart from this, we had a lovely week at Randel, very peaceful, and in a convenient location for exploring the Lake District. The cottage was well stocked, and the heart light and candles made it feel very warm and cosy in the evenings. We also made good use of the game's room (lots of fun and laughs), and the DVDs. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would stop again if we were in the area.

Very poor TV reception and though the promised DVD player was there it was not connected and didn't work once connected. Replacement was supplied when requested but it should have been connected and tested before our arrival.

Homemade cake and biscuits, milk, fresh flowers and all those little things like kitchen roll, foil and wrap. All much appreciated. Loved the remote location of Melbecks and we enjoyed walking down to Bassenthwaite village in the evening to visit the Sun Inn or watching the birds on the bird table. Keswick only 7 miles away so for us this was a perfect place to stay for walking the northern fells and eating out.

We had everything we could possibly need there and we made good use of the table tennis table in the games room nearby. There are beautiful views all round and we were able to walk to the top of Skiddaw from the cottage. Thanks to the owners for the provision of eggs, milk, beverages, cake and biscuits - a lovely welcome. I highly recommend this accommodation.

  • "The cottage was perfect for us and our dog."

It had everything supplied, including a microwave to make our stay easy. The outside space was lovely and it was nice to have a table and chairs right outside the cottage although it could do with a lick of paint and the table was a bit wobbly. The only negatives were that the shower drained very slowly and the cottage smelled of damp due to the condensation in the bathroom having nowhere to go. It was very humid during our stay which I'm sure made the problem worse. Also there is no WiFi but we just used our phone data. All in all, we had a very pleasant stay.

Very peaceful. The cottage had everything we needed. To welcome us there were 6 free range eggs, a banana and lemon drizzle cake, some home baked ginger biscuits and even some treats for our dog. A communal games room, with pool table, lots of board games etc. Outdoor swings for children. There was even a bowl full of nuts to rice the local red squirrels that came every day. Lots of gotwalks nearby.

It's perfect for two and a well-behaved pooch to explore the lakes and relax after a good walk. The extra touches of fresh flowers, fruit loaf, tea, and coffee etc made it very easy to settle in to. I especially loved the bed-sit layout which didn't feel too small with the high open ceiling. We found watching the birds feed right outside the window quite entertaining. We'll be re-booking the Randel again soon.

We also didn’t have to drive too far for the main mountains and towns. There are narrow roads to access the property but this wasn’t an issue and isn’t uncommon throughout the Lake District so didn’t detract from the quality of our stay. On arrival the owners provided complementary treats, including some for the dog which was a lovely added extra. The cottage was well maintained and clean.

The welcome goodies were much appreciated, I arrived on Burns night, a miniature bottle of whisky was a nice touch. The accommodation is dog friendly and importantly you wouldn’t have known, smelled fresh and clean - no doggy odour. The only small negative is the access to the cottages is down a long and winding single car road, if you meet a neighbour you will possibly have to reverse a fair way to a passing spot. I had to go this a couple of times on a very snowy icy road - tested my driving skills!! - However, would not put me off revisiting, lovely, peaceful location.

Plenty of walks from your doorstep. The lane leading to the cottage is very narrow so you will need to be confident reversing your car for oncoming vehicles. We were unfortunate to have people staying in the opposite cottage who owned two dogs which they allowed to roam free who dominated the grounds, they also let their dogs mess on the communal garden which we as responsible dog owners were not very happy about. We did mention this to the owners who said they would have a quiet word with them, not sure they ever did! This was just unfortunate for us as otherwise a perfect get away retreat.

About the location

BASSENTHWAITE

Keswick 8 miles; Cockermouth 9 miles.

An attractive village in the Northern Lakes, Bassenthwaite lies just a short distance to the north east of Bassenthwaite Lake, and retains its traditional rural feel, with a stream flowing gently on the outskirts, whitewashed Lakeland cottages, a pleasant vllage green and a real ale inn full of character! Bassenthwaite Lake itself, while boasting gentler scenery than others in the region, is still one of the most picturesque places in England. Places of interest nearby include Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the Lake with small open-air theatre (reputedly frequented by poets such as Tennyson and Wordsworth), LAke District Wildlife Park, and Dodd Wood. Most of the attractions of the Lake District are within easy reach and the quieter Northern Fells are almost on the doorstep. The nearby towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, both have weekly markets and offer a good range of amenities. The scenery of the Yorkshire Dales is within touring distance, as is the city of Carlisle and Hadrians Wall country.
