Fabulous location for walking with my dog. Very handy for Keswick. Red squirrel and an array of birds to watch. Would definitely return.

"We loved this little cottage."
Everything we needed there. Beds were so comfortable and slept like a log! Beautiful views. Loved watching the birds and red squirrels in the garden. We just felt so comfortable and relaxed there. Even on a rainy day we just watched the skies and mountains. You couldn’t beat being that close to Blencathra. We definitely hope to come back!

"I loved this property and felt very calm after the week's stay."
It was unusually warm weather with temperatures of around 26 deg daily, so the woodland setting provided welcome cover from the hot sun and good views between the trees. If you want to climb mountains, particularly Blencathra, this is the place for you with a footpath two minutes walk away. Me and my little Cockapoo did six walks, including Blencathra TWICE and didn't use the car for the whole stay. We walked into Keswick on one occasion and got the bus back. Derwent View is a simply furnished cottage - the absence of posh furniture, a tiny TV, and no washing machine should not detract from the enjoyment. I would recommend bringing bird/squirrel food as there is a feeder and red squirrels abound (also a 'resident' pheasant which jumped onto the bird table!) as well as birds, mostly chaffinches, robbins, nuthatches and blue tits when I was there.) There is a pleasant walk into the village via Westcoe, which avoids the main road. If you bring some pegs you can do a bit of washing as there is a washing line at the property. A delightful, quiet holiday place and dark at night as no light pollution.

"We did enjoy staying in the property until we realised there was a mouse also staying there."
I was very disappointed by the treatment I received from Sykes. The property was uninhabitable because there was mice yet Sykes did nothing to provide me, a dog and a 5 month old baby somewhere to stay for the night. In the end I had to drive 2 hours back home after a stressful time trying to pack up on my own with my daughter screaming the whole time and then drive back to Keswick early the next morning for work when I was already exhausted from being up every night due to my baby teething. I was only offered a refund on one night’s stay and don’t think this is at all good enough. When I asked for a manager from Sykes to ring me this did not happen (I waited till 5 before driving home) and we were effectively left homeless for the night.

"A pretty cottage in a beautiful setting but spoilt by the lack of comfort."
The sofa was sagging and uncomfortable and the decor was bland, cold and unwelcoming. The shower was only lukewarm and the basin hot tap no more than a trickle. Such a shame because with a little TLC this could be a cosy little haven in wonderful countryside.

"The cottage is in a stunning, quiet, location with fantastic views."
It could do with a bit of TLC (bathroom and kitchen blinds don’t close, sofas sagging) and a deep clean to remove dust webs around the ceilings! Nothing major just little things to make it 5*. The cottage is very well equipped and the bed is comfortable. The visiting array of birds and red squirrels were great to watch so bring some bird food for the table. Overall we had a great time and would definitely return.

"Absolutely love this property - perfect location if you want to escape from everything."
Loved sitting having breakfast whilst watching the red squirrels outside and the birds!! If you like modern trappings this maybe isn’t the place for you - is very clean though (although comfort could be improved - mattresses are on the uncomfortable side). Great location to walk through northern lakes - barely used our car once we were there. Loved it so much this was our second visit.

"The cottage is in a beautiful location overlooking the valley and fells beyond, and we had a lovely view from the lounge window."
The interior was of a reasonable standard and fairly comfortable, but their were some faults. The hot water tap in the bathroom was no more than a trickle and the heater was inadequate. The heaters in the other rooms were OK if you turned up the temperature, but it would have been helpful if we could have been provided with a little coal and tinder to start the fire going on arrival. Also our reception on arrival was not as expected. We arrived after 4pm but there was no-one around to meet us, the office was closed and there was no answer from the telephone numbers given in the info. We had to wait for someone to appear from the centre who then alerted another gentleman who located the key from the office. A better system for key collection is needed. If we need to phone in advance that should be made clearer. Apart from all this we had a pleasant stay and would consider coming again.

"Really a very nice place to stay."
Lots of wildlife to see straight iut the window. Red Squirells, chafinches, pheasents and even an owl! Good location, great access straight onto walking paths. The only thing that would make it better is if there was a washing machine so make sure you have plenty of clothing.

"Location was fantastic, next to walks/ mountains, Blencathra up the road, fantastic views and very private, but decore was a bit old and tired , and without the fire lit it would have been a bit cold."
Bathroom was cold.
The high price was no doubt the location, but Id have expected more updated internal decor and furnishings for the price, and we were charged the same for 4 days as for 7. When I emailed Sykes cottages they never got back to me and difficult to get hold of on the phone.

"Loved the location of the cottage, able to walk straight into the national park and Keswick."
Accommodation was exactly as expected, basic but clean. My only issues, not sure if there were clothes washing facilities which would have been useful, especially if walking over the fells, and comfort. The sofa and beds had definitely seen better days and weren’t comfortable.

"The cottage was quite spacious and generally as expected and was good value for money."
The skirting in the living room didn't look like it had been dusted in a while.
My main criticism was that there were no pillow and duvet protectors, which in the present climate, would be welcome.

"As active walkers this was a great location for exploring both Skiddaw and Blencathra straight from the cottage door (although it should be noted that the cottage was accessed at the end of a 2 mile or so steep narrow lane above Threlkeld and therefore not that close to the actual village pub etc)."
Parking available outside the cottage. The cottage was rustic but well equipped. We would however point out that the electric radiators were only available in the kitchen, lounge and bedroom (which kept the rooms cosy) but none in the front hall or large bathroom (except a small towel rail) leaving those parts particularly cold (even though it was not during a cold period that we stayed). I think the heating would therefore struggle in much colder periods and make a stay much more challenging in terms of warmth. That said, it was a very comfortable and well presented cottage.
