  • "Silloth, is a lovely place, with great beaches, lovely views and what a clean town silloth is,friendly people, with lots of good walking."

Dormie house is a warm, clean little house, it is very basic inside, this is reflected in the price. The beach is literally across the road, cut through the golf course, and it is literally there with wonderful views of Scotland. The only disappointment with dormie house was there was no freezer.and no washing machine. The house is up for sale,l noticed, would l book again, the answer is No,only, because of the lack of freezer and washing machine.

We are glad you enjoyed Silloth. We are disappointed that the things you complained about were things you knew were not there when you booked the Dormie. We have never had a washing machine and have fairly recently put a new kitchen in the property with a new fridge and purposely did not choose to have a freezer as it always took so long to defrost between sits. Great location for sandy beach and the town. We could have done with a freezer also sofas in the lounge were very uncomfortable which made it hard to relax and watch TV at night but these were minor details. Had a great stay at Dormie.

.. some nice touches...milk in the fridge and custard doughnuts on arrival, tea n coffee and washing liquids/hand soap provided. Comfy beds and warm duvets. Easy heating controls. Would probably have used the lounge more if sofa's were more comfy and the view of the tv better from second sofa.. but not a major issue as we were out n about alot...such a beautiful area..especially along the coast rd. We drove to Keswick and Cockermouth..both great. Lovely view of the golf course and an easy walk into town or the beach. We've already rebooked for next year so we certainly enjoyed our stay. And any problems Bev will sort out for you. Cant say fairer than that... looking forward to our return x

The property was still to it's high standards of cleanliness, comfort and had everything we needed for our home away from home. Bev the owner met us personally with the keys and ensured we had everything we needed. We had a lovely peaceful and relaxing week. The property we think is in an ideal location for getting to everywhere we wanted to go, and we went quite a few places. Very dog friendly around and about and we couldn't have had a nicer week.

The owner, Bev is a very nice lady who will greet you and leaves a pint a milk and doughnuts. yum yum. The house is comfortable, well equipped and very clean. (the only thing lacking for us was a bed side light as we like to read in bed and the bedrooms are very dark if you need to get up during the night) Access to the beach is so easy either across the golf course or around the golf course. The village has all you would need. We were blessed with very good weather and there was a carnival on the village green while were there. The promenade is very good and you can walk for miles. We would recommend The Dormie House and it is an ideal base.

The Dormie, Silloth, Cumbria, was clean, comfortable and welcoming after a day out sightseeing and walking on the beach with our dog, Sierra. This is the first time we have taken a dog away with us (usually left with family) we were so surprised at all the dog friendly shops etc. Which made places more accessible for us. Having Sierra with us made it a little more special and having a pet friendly base to live for our holiday was great. Bev was a great host, met us with the keys and ensured we had everything we needed. We really hope to be back in September.

  • "I had read plenty of good reviews of the cottage, so did go expecting it to be pretty good, and it was much as expected, but more spacious - especially the two bedrooms - airy and light, with lots of space."

Bev, the owner was lovely and welcoming on our arrival, with a bottle of milk, jam doughnuts and dog biscuits. There was also a parking permit for our use anywhere in town that it was needed, advice on how to get to the beach, and recommendations on all essential facilities in the town. The beach itself, when we went to it, was simply stunning - very quiet, and a massive long stretch of sand, with plentiful views of Dumfries and Galloway over the Solway Firth. A bit of a challenge to reach with a buggy over the sand dunes, but definitely worth the effort. Bev is a golf coach and former pro golfer, and the dining room doubled up as a golf practice room, which would have been brilliant if you are a fan of golf - and almost tempted me to learn

  • "The cottage was clean and tidy and the beds were comfortable."

There were however issues which could and should have been highlighted in the property description. Notably: 1 The 2 bedrooms are on the 1st floor whereas the only toilet/bathroom is situated on the ground floor. This is both inconvenient and becomes progressively annoying the longer you stay. 2 The kitchen lacked many of the facilities essential to a self catering holiday. In particular there were no laundry facilities (ie no washing machine or dryer' and no iron or ironing board). 3.There was no dishwasher and the kitchen utensils were sparse (for example there were no egg cups) and not conducive to anything other than basic cooking.

About the location

SILLOTH

Maryport 12 miles; Carlisle 23 miles.

The popular resort of Silloth in West Cumbria lies north of the Lake District on the shore of the Solway Firth. On the opposite shore lie the hills of Southern Galloway in Scotland and to the south Skiddaw and the Northern Fells can be seen. Silloth was renowned for its "invigorating air, temperate climate, airy streets, its promenade and beach". It has glorious sea and mountain views and the light and the sunsets are renowned. It was developed in the 1850s; the railway arrived in 1856, the docks were opened 3 years later. The Carr's biscuit factory flour mill opened in 1886. Silloth was for a time, one of the country’s premier seaside resorts. The town was laid out on a regular grid pattern and planned as a "health resort for the upper and middle classes". The streets running off the wide, tree lined, cobbled Criffel Street are all named after the rivers flowing into the Solway Firth. The 'Green', an ever present feature is 34 acres of open grassland and is communal space for all to enjoy. Silloth and Solway Golf Club, situated in the town is a championship course which is ranked No 1 by the National Club Golfer Magazine 2016 for both quality and value. There are superb walks, particularly along the coastline, west to Allonby and east to Grune Point. Birdwatching is ever present. Both the Lake District and the English Heritage site of Birdoswald Fort, Hadrian's Wall are an easy 40 minute drive away. With quiet country roads and the Cumbria Coastal Way this is an ideal location for cyclists and walkers.
