  • "The accommodation is very comfortable and spotlessly clean."

    Bowness-on-Solway village is built of the site of a former Roman fort, in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and was the main attraction for our visit. Currently the accommodation is located within the midst of a major heritage renovation project. Consequently, heavy machinery is moving around the complex during the day. The site is open to residents and the general public offering food, refreshments and a play area for children. The seating area for food and drink is directly under the window of the accommodation. Consequently the smell of cigarettes, food and people chatting is disturbing. This was particularly noticeable at the weekend with many people coming and going. The entrance door to the accommodation suites lacked security as it was often left open. Free range chickens roam the site and the resident cockerel begins crowing at 4.00 am. We think it would be useful to guests if the developers produced an information leaflet to explain to guests the important history of the site and the interesting plans they are undertaking.

  • "Met our needs brilliantly."

    Not sure you could cook a meal from scratch as we ate main meals out. We couldn’t find a chopping board but that could have just been us! Friendly place, very nice set up, no problems encountered, would stay again.

  • "No meet and greet as advised."

    Inspite of calling the number, we had to find out from the lady working in the bistro that the keys were in the studio door- View was a building site. No information on how to use anything in the studio apartment. Appreciate we are in a pandemic, however there was a menu for the bistro. Why couldn't they have put an information pack or even have emailed an online version prior to visit. Obviously still a bit of a work in progress, as bottom drawer of bedside cabinet full of screws and fixings. Extractor fan flue in kitchen not connected and just went into one of the cupboards. Badly thought out bathroom sink and tap as you got soaked when turning on tap as it was too powerful for sink. These comments may seem a bit petty, however the accommodation was listed as four star. We went for a drink and a meal in the Kings Arms next door. There was such a lovely warm welcome and friendly atmosphere. We wished we had stayed there instead.

The village of Bowness-on-Solway lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to the west of the city of Carlisle. The village has a pub and a tea room and Hadrian’s Wall stretches from the village to Wallsend near Newcastle for some 73 miles, with the walk being defined as a ‘National Trail’. The surrounding area is rich in bird life visiting the sand dunes, salt marsh, shingle beds, and peat mosses, and there are many viewpoints and lay-bys, perfect for spotting the waders: oystercatchers, curlew, golden and grey plover, lapwing, knot, dunlin, bar-tailed and black-tailed godwit, redshank, and turnstone. In 1869 a rail line, the Solway Junction Railway, was opened between Bowness and Annan in Scotland, connecting to the Maryport and Carlisle railway. The 1 mile and 176 yard long iron girder viaduct across the water was damaged by an ice build-up in 1875, and again in 1881. It was repaired and continued as a passenger train until 1914 when it became a freight train until 1921, before finally being demolished in 1934. Nearby, the market town of Wigton and the city of Carlisle are popular centres for shopping, pubs and restaurants. Wigton also has a weekly market taking place every Friday and also boasts a theatre. The Victorian seaside resort of Silloth is 16 miles away, whilst Keswick and the heart of the Lake District are reached in 40 minutes' by car. A wonderful base for exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
