Directions from the owner were really helpful. Cottage well maintained and equipped. Warm and welcoming.- Rev Loftus, October 2020
“Just got back from a week at holmfoot cottage, what a beautiful setting, the cottage is down a track surrounded by fields and the river at the bottom .”
The cottage was well equipped, although you now have to to take your own bedding and towels etc,I was contacted by the owner Audrey a couple of days before letting me know this,we took everything we needed with us,so can't really comment about shops or pubs in area, theres a stile at bottom of garden which takes you down to river, this is a public walking route but we only had one lot of walkers use it all week who appeared in the first 10 mins of arriving. We had a daily visitor of a red deer in the field opposite which was lovely, weather was varied couple of days of warm sunshine, couple of days of rain, nice and cosy in cottage with fire on.we went on plenty of long walks with our dog ti who loved it at cottage, used to take himself off to river. The garden is not enclosed though so have to keep an eye on children and dogs, overall a beautiful setting for a relaxing week .- Mrs Kissack, July 2020

“The pictures did not do justice to this wonderful cottage.”
It was bigger than it looked. Saw deer on the track to the cottage.Walked down to the river via the field behind the cottage as the stile was a bit wobbly. Despite the weather we had a lovely holiday. Definately somewhere for those who like peace and quiet we only saw 1 dog walker, 1 fisherman and 2 farmers the whole of the time we were in the cottage.- Mrs Wright, June 2019
“We had everything we needed and more .”

“The cottage was great as I've stayed there before.”
The only downside was Sykes inability to change the booking 6 days after I'd made it.i only wanted to book with you but a different location.you were going to charge me £250 to do this.i wasn't happy at all and would seriously reconsider booking with you again after I'd booked with you before.the accommodation was 5 star but that wasn't the issue- Mr Black, December 2018
“The rural location was great, never seen so many butterflies while relaxing in the garden.”
Cottage had everything that we needed and more, loved it.- Ms Mcgrotty, July 2018
“Delightful cottage in lovely Riverside setting, clean and comfortable, so peaceful with abundant wildlife to watch.”
The roads are so quiet so driving was an absolute pleasure. A large enclosed garden kept the dog happy as did the jar of doggy treats the owner had left and biscuits and wine for us, along with books and games for rainy days. This was our second visit to this charming cottage and won't be our last.- Mrs Foskett, June 2018
“A real gem of a property, very remote with associated peace and tranquility.”
One of the cleanest properties I have ever had the pleasure to stay in with nice little touches thrown in. A welcome pack of nibbles and wine was waiting for us. The river Liddle is the next door neighbour with great access to a pebble beach a few hundred yards away, great for enjoying the peace and quiet and just relaxing with nature. Open log fires and bird/nature watching await if you take the plunge and stay here. We hope to return one day and I will be recommending to friends and family with no hesitation.- Mr Jones, June 2018
“Absolutely perfect location if you want to get away from everything.”- Mrs Lee, June 2018

“Holmfoot was better than we expected which suprised us.”
Its remote location its setting next to the river and the facilities were all exceptional.Despite going in the winter the cottage was cosy and homely even down to the very welcoming electric blankets.Considering all that was included ie towels, linen, fuel and a welcome pack including dog treats the owner Audrey has left no stone unturned. We look forward to returning in warmer weather and enjoying the surrounding area in the summer sunshine- Mr Benson, December 2017

About the location
Gretna 8 miles.
The historic village of Canonbie lies just over the border into Scotland, close to the town of Gretna. Canonbie lies on the River Esk, renowned for its salmon and sea trout fishing, and is celebrated in Walter Scott's poem Marmion, chronicling the exploits of young Lochinvar. This is the heart of The Debatable Lands, the large area of border country that was once controlled by neither the Scots or English, and was a popular refuge for outlaws. The area offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere with attractive coastal landscapes, rural walking and fishing.
