  • "Beautiful house, perfectly located only a few minutes walk from the centre of Cockermouth and with free parking (which is a super hard find so close to town!"

). The has everything you could need on your trip and the owner left lots of lovely welcome touches, including everything you need for a nice brew on arrival, especially appreciated since we didn't have the best weather! Communication from the owner before and during our trip was very informative and timely, highly recommended this cottage.

  • "A lovely riverside house, which was pretty much perfect."

Comfy sofas, nice and warm, great beds and a well equipped kitchen. Very quiet, but only a couple of minutes walk into town. Cockermouth itself, for those that don't know, is a great base for the Northern half of the Lakes. More of a "real" place than Keswick so not as much of a honeypot as the likes of Keswick and Ambleside, which is either a plus or a minus depending on what you're after !

Hello Dhnah. I totally agree that Rubbybanks Road is a very narrow road and I think that your hire car was slightly wider than you were used to. I do provide a permit for handy carparks, but you were unfortunate to arrive when the very popular Cockermouth Food Festival was in full swing and everywhere was much busier than usual. I hope that you will journey north to visit again in the future. Property Owner

  • "What an excellently situated house for a trip to Cockermouth."

Easy walking distance to shops, pubs, restaurants. So grateful for the parking permit which we used outside the house, and the car park permit for the car park over the river. We took 2 cars! The house was sparkling and clean, and the gifts from the host were generous and unexpected. It was such a bonus to find tea bags and milk upon arrival. Plus cake crisps and wine! Lovely treats. Definitely looking to return.

Thanks for the great feedback Eliza, it is great to hear that you made use of the parking permit over the footbridge- and managed to park on our narrow Rubbybanks Road too! You sound as though you made excellent use of the proximity of town to walk to some of our many pubs and restaurants. Looking forward to your return one day. Property Owner

Carole, the host, kept in touch with us and checked everything was OK regularly, and offered some great advice on local eating and activities. We loved hearing the river as we slept - very zen and we loved Cockermouth which was not as hectic as the more touristy towns so we came back to quieter supermarkets and restaurants at the end of the day, yet it had its own charm. Near enough to enjoy all the walking and outdoor activities of the northern lakes - we even had fish and chips on the beach at Maryport ( 15 minutes away).

It just offers everything we are looking for in a holiday home away from home but with the extra little touches provided by the owners of fresh flowers and welcome fruit basket with home baked cake and a bottle of wine. These are little things that really make you feel special. The location is fabulous for all the surrounding villages and towns to visit and if you wanted to remain in Cockermouth there are many shops, cafes, pubs and gardens to spend your time visiting all within walking distance of the property. It is spotless clean and for 4 adults in our party more than enough room to cater for us all to have as much personal space as we want while roomy enough for us to have dinner in the dining room followed by a game or two from the selection of games in the house. Parking permit for right out side the gate and another permit for the car park right across the road over a small footbridge make this perfect for more than 1 car families and the permit also allows you free parking in the surrounding towns which is an added bonus. it really is a fabulous house and one that we will keep coming back to for as long as we can

They stayed on the middle floor and all slept really well. Stairs to the top floor are steep, but we had read this on another review so were prepared and they weren't a problem at all. The house is situated a very short walk from main street, shops, local pubs and restaurants. The Bitter End pub was nice, friendly staff, tasty food and dog friendly. 15 minutes to Maryport, the closest seaside town and 30 minutes to st bees head which sadly we didn't get chance to visit this time. The northern and western lakes are my favourite and are truly breathtaking, all a short drive away through stunning scenery, (checkers from the usual lakes, check out Surprise View over Derwent water and Moss Falls, with a cheeky stop off for refreshments at The Chalet in Portinscale on the way - love that place! • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Cockermouth at 1 Rubby Banks."

The house has been completely refurbished and is very comfortable and well-equipped. Because the weather was so amazing, we were able to eat all our meals out-of-doors. If there was anything which could be improved, it would be the outside area at the rear of the property although it was perfectly satisfactory. There was a lovely welcome gift of a plentiful and varied bowl of fresh fruit, a bottle of wine and some chocolate, all of which were very acceptable. We loved being so near the river Cocker and being able to hear the sound of the water. Vehicular access to the house is a bit tricky down narrow roads and although it can be possible to park outside, it is not a designated place although we were fortunate right up until the last evening when we arrived home fairly late to find it taken. There is a public car park across the river, accessed by a footbridge but it is a bit of a detour to drive there owing to one-way streets. However, a parking permit for this and other car parks in Allerdale was provided which was a nice touch and saved us quite a bit of money during the week. Cockermouth is a lovely little town with some interesting independent shops, a couple of supermarkets and a plethora of cafes, restaurants and pubs so plenty of choice. It is also a good centre for the surrounding area. We would happily return to Cockermouth and to the house.

The area is so quiet and yet you are a 2 minute walk from the town centre which is lovely to wander along the streets and take in the lovely little shops, all dog friendly and welcoming. Home baked cake no less! Grannie, had en suite on the second floor whilst son and two year old grandson shared two bedrooms and bathroom on first floor. Parking with permit just two mins across the bridge was brilliant. Weather very mixed including snow but utility room proved invaluable. Great gas fires in addition to central heating. Cosy rugs to curl up with to watch TV and films. Glorious day on penultimate day which was spent around Bassenthwaite lake. Up on Whinlatter with my cumbrian family walking the Gruffalo trail whilst older members had lunch in Armathwaite Hall brasserie overlooking the lake and Skiddaw. Magical. Do your homework and find all the indoor and outdoor activities. We went to the Aquarium at Maryport on a really wet day. The children loved it. Picnic in the cars on the promenade. Great warm swimming at Workington's new complex for £1 for children. Never mind Keswick's two exceptional parks!

About the location

COCKERMOUTH

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
