  • "The cottage was lovely surrounded by beautiful gardens in a very pretty area but to say that pubs and shops were within walking distance was completely inaccurate as the nearest shops and pubs were in Cockermouth which were a good 10-15 minutes by car."

Despite this I would definitely go again

Thanks for pointing this out. The listing clearly needs amending and I have asked for this to be done. Property Owner

The shower could do with a refurb but overall great stay would recommend. Thanks

  • "This is our second time at Buttermere, and the owner, Marna, was so very helpful to us."

The accommodation is lovely, and the booking procedure with Sykes, plus follow up, was super efficient. Everything was just was we remembered, and just as lovely as the time before. What makes this place extra special is the wildlife garden, and the walks with our dog, who absolutely loved it. We will definitely return.

  • "As regulars visitors to the Lake district, Buttermere was the best self-catering accommodation so far."

Lovely log burning fire, quality fixtures and fittings, quality cooking utensils and cutlery etc. The space is warm, bright, open and airy and there's plenty of room for 4 guests. The bedrooms were fitted out with good quality bedding and there is lots of storage space. Nice big bathroom with plenty of hot water. Outside there is tables and chairs where you can sit and watch the wildlife. Buttermere is surrounded by quiet countryside just a short drive from the Lake District's main attractions. Just a couple of minor areas for improvement. Although the whole place was spotless, a few cobwebs on the ceilings and please set the heating to come on, the morning or night before arrival (especially if the forecast is below 0). We don't often return to the same place but we will be returning to Buttermere, sometime in the future. Thanks for a lovely 5 night, relaxing break.

  • "Buttermere Cottage is superb."

It was everything we hoped for and more. Such comfortable beds, and a well equipped kitchen. Completely suitable for those less mobile, and those for whom mobility is not a problem. It meant that we could enjoy our little escape with our 91 year old mum completely inclusively, which was a joy. Eco friendly too, and with lots of little extras left by the owner; who was so thoughtful. The grounds are wonderful to walk around, completely safe and secure for our little dog. We had the most lovely time, and are sure to return.

  • "Beautiful eco friendly stay."

The little touches really do make a huge difference. Home grown veg, bread and chocolate on arrival. Beautiful gardens and wonderful host!

  • "Splendid accommodation."

Everything there in the kitchen one could possibly need. Rather hoped both bedrooms would initially look similar but one was definitely better looking than the other. Car parking excellent and walks through the grounds to the pool early morning was heavenly. Thank you

The property

This outstanding, eco-friendly ground floor cottage in Lorton Vale sits just three miles from both Cockermouth and Lorton.

Built with an abundance of local and original barn timber, the cottage boasts an old rustic charm despite being built by the owner, who lives on site, in 2007.

Featuring sustainable underfloor heating and solar panels, and equipped with organic bed linen, Buttermere Cottage is one of four charming eco-friendly properties offering a relaxing getaway with a small carbon footprint.

With all rooms spread across the ground floor, the cottage is easily accessible for disabled guests and boasts two superbly sized double bedrooms, one with room for a wheelchair.

Further through the cottage is a well-maintained shower room and a drying cupboard, particularly useful if visiting in winter! The open kitchen/dining/lounge comes fully equipped with an electric oven and fridge/freezer plus a cosy wood burning stove and a TV and DVD player, providing all you need for a relaxing evening. Step to the rear of the cottage and discover a hidden gem - a beautiful terrace area complete with furniture, perfect for a sunny day.

With private parking for one car, and further available over the stream, Buttermere Cottage has everything you need for a rural getaway, with plenty to do in the surrounding areas.

In Cockermouth, visit Wordsworth's House or one of the many art galleries; be adventurous in Braithwaite on the Go Ape circuit; or branch further afield, taking an hour's drive to Carlisle Castle. Sitting on ten acres of land, Buttermere cottage is an idyllic retreat, surrounded by newly planted woodland, a wildlife meadow, pond and arboretum, with plenty of wildlife to spot including deer, foxes, badgers, and the resident barn owl.

For cosy evenings in, countryside walks, and a variety of days out, look no further.

About the location

COCKERMOUTH

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
