The only real disappointment was the hard beds and pillows, particularly the kingsize and double beds. I would have expected additional pillows to be available as all our family prefer to have 2 pillows each. However, we did request a pillow and the owner gave us one immediately (pity we had to ask). The facilities generally were good, although a dishwasher would have been nice, as they have been available in other Sykes Cottages we have stayed at. Parking was also a little difficult as next door had 2 cars on the driveway, there needs to be a clearly defined parking area for residents of the Hayloft. We were fortunate with the weather, but had there been heavy rain it would have been difficult to dry clothes as the tumble drier was "out of order". The issues mentioned did not stop us from having a really splendid 4 day holiday.

The property

The Hayloft Cottage, an end of terrace cottage in the pretty village of Eaglesfield near Cockermouth, is the perfect base for a family holiday off the beaten track in the Lake District.

Packed with character, including exposed stone and original beams, yet very spacious and with a contemporary finish, the Hayloft Cottage is ideal for a family or group of friends seeking affordable accommodation in the Lake District at any time of year.

Downstairs there's a lovely light and airy open plan living area with oak flooring and underfloor heating and a lovely wood burning stove.

There's plenty of comfortable seating, too.

The kitchen diner also has underfloor heating plus a fabulous Aga-style range cooker.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a washing machine in the utility room.

There's also a downstairs cloakroom with WC and hand basin.

Upstairs are three lovely, light bedrooms - a master with a king size bed, another double and a twin room - plus a very spacious family bathroom with shower cubicle, bath, hand basin and WC.

The garden at the Hayloft is a particular delight, with a flagged stone patio and steps up to a lawn with mature flower-filled borders.

There's ample off street parking for two cars.

Eaglesfield is a lovely peaceful village set in rural surroundings not far from the lesser known West Lakes like Buttermere, Crummock and Ennerdale, winner of View of the Year.

It's a wonderful part of Lakeland, being off the main tourist track, yet with so many places to explore.

Nearby Cockermouth with its castle, art galleries, shops and restaurants is a great starting point for a trip around Wordsworth Country.

The Hayloft Cottage is close to the gorgeous Cumbrian coast for a day on the beach, and an easy and scenic drive to lively Keswick.

Take a day trip to Lake Windermere for a trip on one of the famous Windermere steamers, or head for bustling Penrith with its shops, bars, cinema and swimming pool.

With attractions like Go Ape, the Aquarium of the Lakes and the Kong indoor climbing centre, there's plenty to keep the kids happy, while the walking and cycling opportunities around the West Lakes will suit outdoor adventurers.

Whether you're enjoying a family holiday in the Lakes, or you're a group of friends celebrating a special occasion, the Hayloft Cottage is excellent value for money at any time of the year.

About the location

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
