  • "Amazing Place to stay."

Only a couple of issue 1) front door stiff - but wasnt an issue as used the back doorr to courtyard all the time. 2) The WiFi was not good though but as we were going to get away from everything this didn't cause to many issues. But if you were planning on working from there you need to be aware. neither of which we thought were bad enough to trouble the caretaker/owner on our stay - and had already seen feedback which mentioned them both so were expecting these may issues. On the plus side - its a huge property and was very clean through out. We were there in storms and it was a very Cozy ( yes i know with the size of the rooms seems strange ) and warm . Would highly recommend this venue as a place to stay.

  • "Loved the property itself."

Spacious for 6 people. Lovely decoration and home from home . Well equipped. Super parking. Great location. No tumble dryer, though advertised as such. WiFi was dreadful. One of our party had to return home as was unable to work from the property and second member of our group had to work in a local cafe. Such a shame. Extremely difficult to unlock the front door. Definitely needs addressing.

  • "Stayed here a few times now."

Very comfortable and spacious. Two things to be aware of. Front door key doesn't unlock easily with white key, doesn't unlock at all with hello key. Oven door had been broken last 3 stays and is unfortunately still broken. Meaning cannot use oven to cook as it loses all its heat.

  • "Beautiful spacious apartment, gorgeous high ceilings."

Only issue was no secure garden or patio area, which was a real problem as we had a toddler and a dog and it was absolutely scorching for the weekend we were there. You had to climb onto units and window ledges to open the windows, and we could not leave doors open as dog and child could run straight onto car park area. Needs stable door on back and baby gates. Staircase was also very steep, so would also benefit from a baby gate

Quiet location with easy parking, good base for exploring the local area. Very clean. No tumble dryer in the property - was listed in property description, which was a bit of an issue in a particularly wet week.

  • "The property was nice, clean and spacious, it had everything we needed to self cater and enjoy our stay."

There were a few things we would however point out: A) There was an incredible amount of ants in the house, despite our best efforts they kept coming. B) the master bedroom mattress is incredibly hard old Sprung which didn't do the rest of the bedroom's comfort any justice. C) The shower in the main upstairs bathroom leaks and could do with looking at. With exception from the above the stay was nice the place was clean and overall we did enjoy our stay. We tried our best to leave everything in the same place and clean up after ourselves before leaving. I would Reccomend and I would stay again. Thanks

  • "Gorgeous, stylish house."

The estate has an exclusive feel to it. It is close to the town centre and the C2C cycling trail. We'd recommend Tarantella for eating out but avoid Diamond take away. The beds and sofas are v comfortable and the master bed is massive! The WiFi works well. A few little problems with the plumbing but both the owner and house keeper were amazing and so quick to help. We had a fantastic holiday and would highly recommend the house and Cockermouth.

  • "This is our first time booking a property via this website."

We were pleasantly surprised by our booking. We have to say that the photographs do not do justice to this property. The rooms are large and spacious and fully fitted with all that you would require for your stay. It is a unique property set within a former school and it really was a pleasure to stay here. We found the property owner to be amenable and accessible. We requested, at the 11th hour a highchair and a travel cot and both were accommodated without any fuss at all. The property is well situated with lovely walks within short distance of the property. The centre of Cockermouth, again within short distance of the property and easily walkable. We would highly recommend this property. We will visit again.

  • "Lovely house except for the horrible drain smell in the en-suite."

I was however disappointed when I was contacted by the owner at 1030am on the date of my departure advising me that I had been over an hour late leaving the property and I had left dirty dishes in the dishwasher and they were therefore charging me a late leaving fee for 1.5 hours. He stated in his text that I left over an hour after the published time of 10am, he sent this at 1030am. I had left 15 minutes late and forgotten to switch the dishwasher on. The owner suggested that instead of him contacting Sykes I could go back and pay the housekeeper £30. I of course did not. Shame, it is a nice house but I certainly won’t be going back.

  • "Negatives The advert states there is a patio area with seats this isn't the case."

Also there isn't a tumble dryer, this will cause difficulties in the Summer due to nowhere to dry clothes. There was a constant issue with the back door the lock kept sticking. There wasn't a measuring jugs or a large bowl to fit in the microwave. What should also be mentioned there are two flights of stairs to go upstairs which may impact on those with mobility issues. In the winter I should imagine it will take a while to warm the house due to the high ceilings. There was a foul stench in the ensuite everyday which needs to be sorted. Also we had a parking ticket when we parked in Cockermouth. Note a disc is required to park on the High Street and you need to display the time you park. Discs are available from the shops. Note the signs where you park as some allow different times. This should be included in the visitors book. Positives A lovely location very central to a number of places. Cockermouth is a beautiful Town with fabulous butchers, fishmonger, Baker and very picturesque. The people are so friendly and personable. Lovely gift shops, jewellery shops and a variety of other shops. Highly recommend staying in this area. The School House is lovely house but is tired and could do with a refurb.

  • "This is a lovely house with a very well equipped kitchen and plenty enough living space for the people it sleeps."

It's in a great position to explore the area, there's a lovely Greenway walk into Cockermouth right across the road. Our only negative experience was that the housekeeper parked up outside and just as we were putting our last things in the car, the second it went 10:00 the housekeeper rang the doorbell to come in, it made us feel like we were being pushed out and took away from the welcome, 10:02 and we'd have been gone, while I understand the tight schedules especially now it seemed very rude.

We were very pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of this property. The bed in the main bedroom was extremely comfortable - and large. As there were only the two of us, and the dog, we had loads of space. The property is ideally situated for Cockermouth (we are well acquainted with this area as up until last August we lived only 8 miles away). The property was clean and we loved the furnishings. We hope to return sometime later in the year. The only drawback would be the lack of an enclosed garden for the dog.

However, on arrival the freezer which is not mentioned was so iced up the drawers would not open and took an age to defrost. It required a general hoover through and there were cobwebs on the ceiling in the living room. One of the living room table lamps did not work as did the upstairs hallway light. There were no instructions for any of the appliances. The on-suite bathroom smelled heavily of drains and we finished up using the other bathroom. Finally outside the front entrance the step and ground was covered in bird droppings which made it very unpleasant to use.

However the mattress in the master en-suite bedroom is really uncomfortable - you can feel the springs in it. It was so bad that I moved in the middle of one night to the third bedroom, which had a much more comfortable mattress. The kitchen would benefit from the addition of a potato peeler and a potato masher.

All services and facilities were good: water, heating, wi-fi, sky TV (freeview channels only). The travel cot and high chair were most welcome too. Very spacious, apart from the 3rd bedroom which lacks room and furniture - but the other 2 bedrooms are large and have plenty of storage if you're willing to share. Great location with easy access to the Northern Lakes and Cumbria - Cockermouth centre is only a 20 min footpath walk away or 5 min by car. Definitely not a 'cottage', being a large apartment over 2 floors of the refurbished old Grammar school but tastefully furnished and decorated throughout, quiet and relaxing and certainly a possible re-booking in future.

About the location

COCKERMOUTH

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
