  • "Thank you for a great stay."

The property was exactly what we required for a family stay with dog. We felt very comfortable and ‘at home’ here. It was interesting to return to the school which we attended and see how it had been developed. We will certainly recommend the property and would use it again.

We had a wonderful stay and if in Cockermouth again would definitely stay there. Could do with a hairdryer.

  • "Lovely property, roomy and comfortable."

Very clean and tidy. Bathroom could do with updating and hot water temperature is not quite hot enough when showering. Overall a great holiday home.

  • "This is our first time booking a property via this website."

We were pleasantly surprised by our booking. We have to say that the photographs do not do justice to this property. The rooms are large and spacious and fully fitted with all that you would require for your stay. It is a unique property set within a former school and it really was a pleasure to stay here. We found the property owner to be amenable and accessible. We requested, at the 11th hour a highchair and a travel cot and both were accommodated without any fuss at all. The property is well situated with lovely walks within short distance of the property. The centre of Cockermouth, again within short distance of the property and easily walkable. We would highly recommend this property. We will visit again.

  • "Lovely house except for the horrible drain smell in the en-suite."

I was however disappointed when I was contacted by the owner at 1030am on the date of my departure advising me that I had been over an hour late leaving the property and I had left dirty dishes in the dishwasher and they were therefore charging me a late leaving fee for 1.5 hours. He stated in his text that I left over an hour after the published time of 10am, he sent this at 1030am. I had left 15 minutes late and forgotten to switch the dishwasher on. The owner suggested that instead of him contacting Sykes I could go back and pay the housekeeper £30. I of course did not. Shame, it is a nice house but I certainly won’t be going back.

  • "This cottage would be perfect if the en suite drain situation were resolved."

It is a lovely large cottage in a very convenient location for exploring the Lake District. However the smell of the drains really caused issues for us using the room.

I have stayed in many holiday homes and would rate this as one of the best.We found it perfectly located for exploring Cockermouth (getting there by car or the very pleasant riverside walk) and the coast and Lake District beyond.Communication with Sykes and the housekeeper both excellent.

  • "Negatives The advert states there is a patio area with seats this isn't the case."

Also there isn't a tumble dryer, this will cause difficulties in the Summer due to nowhere to dry clothes. There was a constant issue with the back door the lock kept sticking. There wasn't a measuring jugs or a large bowl to fit in the microwave. What should also be mentioned there are two flights of stairs to go upstairs which may impact on those with mobility issues. In the winter I should imagine it will take a while to warm the house due to the high ceilings. There was a foul stench in the ensuite everyday which needs to be sorted. Also we had a parking ticket when we parked in Cockermouth. Note a disc is required to park on the High Street and you need to display the time you park. Discs are available from the shops. Note the signs where you park as some allow different times. This should be included in the visitors book. Positives A lovely location very central to a number of places. Cockermouth is a beautiful Town with fabulous butchers, fishmonger, Baker and very picturesque. The people are so friendly and personable. Lovely gift shops, jewellery shops and a variety of other shops. Highly recommend staying in this area. The School House is lovely house but is tired and could do with a refurb.

Ideal location for Cockermouth town with a little local bus service available to take you into town if you didn't want to walk or take the car. Perfect for exploring lakes and not too far from Keswick.

  • "This is a lovely house with a very well equipped kitchen and plenty enough living space for the people it sleeps."

It's in a great position to explore the area, there's a lovely Greenway walk into Cockermouth right across the road. Our only negative experience was that the housekeeper parked up outside and just as we were putting our last things in the car, the second it went 10:00 the housekeeper rang the doorbell to come in, it made us feel like we were being pushed out and took away from the welcome, 10:02 and we'd have been gone, while I understand the tight schedules especially now it seemed very rude.

  • "Once we were able to get into the property (the owner had changed the key code without telling yourselves - however a quick phone call remedied this)."

We were very pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness of this property. The bed in the main bedroom was extremely comfortable - and large. As there were only the two of us, and the dog, we had loads of space. The property is ideally situated for Cockermouth (we are well acquainted with this area as up until last August we lived only 8 miles away). The property was clean and we loved the furnishings. We hope to return sometime later in the year. The only drawback would be the lack of an enclosed garden for the dog.

  • "This property really should be a 5 star."

However, on arrival the freezer which is not mentioned was so iced up the drawers would not open and took an age to defrost. It required a general hoover through and there were cobwebs on the ceiling in the living room. One of the living room table lamps did not work as did the upstairs hallway light. There were no instructions for any of the appliances. The on-suite bathroom smelled heavily of drains and we finished up using the other bathroom. Finally outside the front entrance the step and ground was covered in bird droppings which made it very unpleasant to use.

  • "We found the accommodation ideally situated and generally provided good facilities for our party of six."

However the mattress in the master en-suite bedroom is really uncomfortable - you can feel the springs in it. It was so bad that I moved in the middle of one night to the third bedroom, which had a much more comfortable mattress. The kitchen would benefit from the addition of a potato peeler and a potato masher.

  • "The cottage (more two-storey apartment than cottage) was perfect for our three-generation family group of four adults, one toddler and one pooch."

We loved the large rooms and nice furnishings. The third bedroom was a bit tight, but great for our guests. All services and facilities were good: water, heating, wi-fi, sky TV (freeview channels only). The travel cot and high chair were most welcome too. The location was perfect for the Western Lakes - and local shops and services too. All in all, we loved our stay here.

  • "Great place to stay for the Xmas week for 6 of us."

Very spacious, apart from the 3rd bedroom which lacks room and furniture - but the other 2 bedrooms are large and have plenty of storage if you're willing to share. Great location with easy access to the Northern Lakes and Cumbria - Cockermouth centre is only a 20 min footpath walk away or 5 min by car. Definitely not a 'cottage', being a large apartment over 2 floors of the refurbished old Grammar school but tastefully furnished and decorated throughout, quiet and relaxing and certainly a possible re-booking in future.

About the location

COCKERMOUTH

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
