“This was a pleasant cottage but felt a bit 'dated' and resting on its laurels (ie the 2009 'Gold' certificate on display).”

Internally the cottage was clean, the beds were comfy and the kitchen well equipped, however for my taste the living room was a bit dated and sparse. The outside of the property was a little grubby looking and whilst there was a lovely garden which was a real suntrap there were no comfortable outside seats. Sitting on a hard wooden picnic table for any length of time isn't really a viable way to enjoy the sun - although ideal for eating a meal al fresco. We were very fortunate to have ...

Sitting on a hard wooden picnic table for any length of time isn't really a viable way to enjoy the sun - although ideal for eating a meal al fresco. We were very fortunate to have fantastic weather but enjoyment of the outside space was compromised by the lack of comfortable seating. The setting was lovely, although much nearer to the busy A66 than anticipated. The location is very convenient for getting to nearby attractions. I really enjoyed my stay, as did my companion and my dog, but in comparison to other cottages that I have stayed for similar price felt the standard was not comparable.

About the location

COCKERMOUTH

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
