..but would suggest a better refrigerator with a bigger freezer would be more suitable. All the staff and management did everything to make our stay a great one. Would recommend this stay to all.

  • "Ian (the owner) and his staff were attentive and very helpful."

Nothing is too much trouble. The food and drinks at the bistro were amazing. The retro games were great for the whole family. Chickens everywhere, and very funny to watch. The little shop has every bit of essentials you could require and a bit more... The gym is very well equipped, the hut was lovely and warm even with the little oil heater alone. The hut wasnt sold with WiFi but you could connect to the hub quite easily. Oven is more than capable of cooking for 3. Be aware building work is still ongoing, but never heard any disturbance. Scaffolding is currently over the paths so make sure walking boots are to hand. I look forward to returning. Thank you for a great week.

  • "I think it would be helpful if there was more storage in the hut, maybe few shelves and also more plug sockets and a clock would be nice, think it lacks the feminine touch."

The hosts were fantastic and very welcoming. We enjoyed using the gym and feeding the chickens on site. It was a great base to explore the northern lakes. We will certainly visit again.

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our week, the only thing I would say was the wicker chairs were not comfortable to sit on for any length of time, maybe Ian the owner could look into getting something else at some point."

We found Ian very nice and helpful and staff also. Loved the cockerel and hens wandering about and the gym was so well fitted out. Will try and go back next year. Ruth &Ian Taylor

With a basket if logs waiting for our arrival along with the chilled bottle of cava in the fridge. So peaceful and quiet that we slept late every day. A great holiday to recharge your batteries.

Cabin was more than comfortable and had everything you could need for a relaxing stay. More than enough space for family of 3 and a dog. Ian and his team went above and beyond to make our little girls third birthday very special. I was overwhelmed by their kindness and all round helpfulness and hospitality. Thank you so so much to you all. We will definitely be back and recommend to everyone.

About the location

BOWNESS-ON-SOLWAY

Wigton 10 miles; Carlisle 13 miles.

The village of Bowness-on-Solway lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to the west of the city of Carlisle. The village has a pub and a tea room and Hadrian’s Wall stretches from the village to Wallsend near Newcastle for some 73 miles, with the walk being defined as a ‘National Trail’. The surrounding area is rich in bird life visiting the sand dunes, salt marsh, shingle beds, and peat mosses, and there are many viewpoints and lay-bys, perfect for spotting the waders: oystercatchers, curlew, golden and grey plover, lapwing, knot, dunlin, bar-tailed and black-tailed godwit, redshank, and turnstone. In 1869 a rail line, the Solway Junction Railway, was opened between Bowness and Annan in Scotland, connecting to the Maryport and Carlisle railway. The 1 mile and 176 yard long iron girder viaduct across the water was damaged by an ice build-up in 1875, and again in 1881. It was repaired and continued as a passenger train until 1914 when it became a freight train until 1921, before finally being demolished in 1934. Nearby, the market town of Wigton and the city of Carlisle are popular centres for shopping, pubs and restaurants. Wigton also has a weekly market taking place every Friday and also boasts a theatre. The Victorian seaside resort of Silloth is 16 miles away, whilst Keswick and the heart of the Lake District are reached in 40 minutes' by car. A wonderful base for exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
