We had a great holiday with great views house was well equiped but very dated the garden was overgrown in places not like the photos on listing The local pub served great food

Thank you for your feedback. We're pleased that you enjoyed your holiday. Our apologies that the garden was overgrown, the lakes has been growing profusely this year, we will be attending to it. We're sorry that you found the property dated, others as you will see from previous reviews find it homely, comfortable and full of character. The property is also internally pretty much exactly as recently photographed so there should have been no surprises for you, however we will have a close look at anything that needs immediate attention. • "We really enjoyed our visit to Dale House."

We loved the space it provided and the homely touches, which made it feel like home from home. Very well equipped kitchen and nice to have the radios to listen to in each room. The village was a real hidden gem in our view and we loved our walks from the house, especially to the local shop and our car trips further afield. Our Cockapoo Abbie loved being able to use the enclosed garden space and we felt she was safe there. Just so the owners know, I had to fix the shower door which had partly come off it’s track. Refitting the plastic guides and the loose screw was all that was needed. Dale House is definitely a property we would visit again. Thank you. Joyce and Bill

Really peaceful spot and great to be able to walk to the pub and have the shop around the corner. Extremely lucky with the weather and it was great being so close to Crummock and Buttermere for kayaking and swimming. Thanks for a wonderful stay and we hope to return.

  • "The house is in a beautiful spot with a lovely garden."

The outside furniture is a table with attached benches. As others have mentioned, the bathroom could do with a spruce up, but the water was hot and the bath very welcome after a day on the fells. The king size bed had a comfy mattress with a bit of a bouncy frame. Loved all the pictures and ornaments, it gave the place a feel of staying in a friend's home. Plenty of crockery etc and so would suit a family of four/five I would think. TV a bit inadequate if that is your thing (limited freeview) - loved the radio in every room. Thank you Dale House for a smashing holiday.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are pleased that you enjoyed the location of Dale House and the garden. We take all comments on board. We hope that you would return to the Lake District again. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely week at Dale House, very warm and comfortable."

Great lounge (cosy open fire most nights) and liked the excellent general character of the House. Cannot complain about facilities and quality equipment in abundance, except the shower cubicle which I found to be very small (don't want to put others off reading this....I'm a big bloke). Much appreciated the starter fire fuel and wine. Very comfortable bed(just the two of us), and spacious bedroom. I guess at some stage, the bathroom and kitchen would benefit from an upgrade (my wife's bug bear was the bathroom blinds), but didn't detract too much from our enjoyment of Dale House. The utility was very useful, especially for outdoor gear and dog cleaning. Have driven through Lorton a couple of times, but first time staying there......hidden gem! We loved it's character, history, locals, (We actually got a very pleasant surprise, adult carol singers outside the door one evening), location and ease of exploring Northern Lakes, and a short drive to our favourite pub, Kirkstile Inn. Although we were fairly lucky with the weather, it would be good to return during warmer weather to enjoy the garden. A good barometer, is the fact we miss the house, village and Northern Lakes.

Thank you for your feedback. We are so glad that you enjoyed your time at the property and all that the area has to offer. Lakelovers Owner Team Property Owner

Beds were really comfortable. Location was ideal with walks outside your door and Buttermere just down the road. An excellent library of books for all readers and games to while away the evening. The Whetsheaf did not disappoint, with good food at a reasonable price. Thank you for a great stay.

All cooking facilities were there with lots of pots/pans/plates/cups to choose from. Very good rooms. Nice garden with parking for 2 cars. Close (10 minute walk) excellent restaurant pub (Wheatsheaf Inn). Unfortunately village shop owner on holiday, but looked nice. Watched red squirrels, calves and rabbits from windows. Lots of walk from doorstep or few minutes drive to lakes.

  • "Warm, comfortable and charming cottage, in an old fashioned sort of way."

We did have a problem with the fridge door which sagged on its hinge when opened and had to be lifted to close properly. The fridge worked ok but, considering how many times one goes into the fridge, it was an irritant. I also felt that some de-cluttering would not go amiss - there was lots of "stuff" but the drawers and cupboards were over full, in some cases with what looked like junk, or at least, cast offs from somewhere else. It would also help if Sykes could manage with fewer emails - I counted 11 in respect of this hire!

Thank you for letting us know about the fridge door, we have resolved this and it is now closing perfectly. We will also, check through the drawers and filter the leaflets we have of useful places to visit whilst staying up here in the Lakes. We would love to welcome you back again to this beautiful area in the future. Property Owner

The house and village still have their traditional lakeland charm, we loved everything about the house, from the fixtures and fittings, to the furniture and the old piano in the farmhouse style dining room. If you need good WiFi and TV reception, a transistor radio or the use of a 1970s telephone, then it's all available at Dale House.

  • "2nd time staying here in 5 months."

Really noticed just how much of a deep clean it needs this time and with a small baby wouldn't be staying again. Cobwebs and deep dust, lots of dog hairs on sofas and rugs. Partner stood up in black trousers and was covered after sitting on sofa. Both times staying there has been dog muck in garden. Small bedroom has new mattress stacked on extremely old mattress so if you sleep on it you tip out. Fridge leaks on floor, small bathroom mirror just propped up. Clothes airer rope was worn and snapped so needs replacing. Generally the kitchen surfaces sinks and things well cleaned but everything else was skirting, doors, staircases etc were in need of a clean 5 months ago and haven't been touched since. The cleanliness is the only bad point as we do love it otherwise.

Thank you for your feedback following your stay at Dale House. Firstly please accept our apologies that you were not entirely happy with the facilities and cleanliness within the property, our cleaner takes great pride in her work we only wish you had contacted us during your stay so we could have investigated the issues you may have had and rectified anything which needed attention. we do hope that these issues did not detract from your enjoyment of the Lakes and that you had an enjoyable holiday. Views front and back wonderful. Buttermere, Loweswater 5 minutes away. Ennerdale within easy reach. It's not the chic-est of cottages (and the telly was a bit characterful!) but if you need a fine base for the NW lakes, this is as good as it gets. The piano was a real bonus.

  • "We had a great 2 weeks at Dale House."

The house has rustic charm. We found it spacious and well equipped and it quickly felt like a home from home. Lorton is a lovely village which has a little shop and a great pub (apparently) it had to close due to covid while we were there so we missed out on it's delights! There are tennis courts in the village which can be booked online for £10 per hour for visitors. (search for Lorton Tennis Club) A short drive away is Cockermouth or Keswick, both offer lots of shopping and eating opportunities. The house is close to Whinlatter Forest which offers mountain biking, go ape and lots of great walks. There are so many walks, high and low, and beautiful scenery to explore, and Dale House is a great base to do it! The only thing to mention is that if you have a large car, the parking is a bit tight!

  • "Dale cottage was a great holiday home for a week."

Initially we were unsure as there was a damp musty spell but this disappeared once we lit fragranced candles. We loved the location and the cottage was very spacious and Met all our needs. Plenty of cooking pots and pans. Lovely garden where we’d enjoyed late evening sun. Brodie our Alaskan malamute loved it too. The only negative comment would be that the windows needed a clean and the very back yard area needed tidying up other than that we had a perfect stay. Highly recommend both the cottage and location

We are really delighted that you and your dog enjoyed your stay at Dale House and thank you for your 100% feedback. In response to your helpful comments we have arranged for a window cleaner to come more regularly. As for the garden, it is in two parts, the lawn and parking section are very neat and the section at the rear of the house we like to leave slightly more to nature. Whilst we appreciate that this may not be to everyone's taste, the hedgehogs definitely prefer it. We will keep an eye on it. We're also glad that you became acclimatised to the natural aroma of the house and that it turned out not to be a problem. It hasn't been raised previously as an issue but of course it is a rural area and the Lake District is sometimes wet. In any case, we really hope that we are able to welcome you back soon Property Owner

  • "We thought the cottage, or house, was absolutely lovely, much bigger than we thought and we'd love to go back some day."

Our son especially loved sleeping in a double bed. The only negatives were a lack of oven gloves and we found it very tricky getting the car in and out of the parking space at the back. I even managed to reverse into a wall, which was my fault (no damage done to the wall). If I owned the house I would consider moving the front gate post by about a foot making it easier to get a car in and out.

The property

Dale House is a semi-detached early Victorian house resting in High Lorton, a quaint Lakeland village surrounded by spellbinding scenery from glistening lakes and magnificent mountain views to pretty Lakeland towns.

Retaining many original features, including stained glass, a characterful open fire and Inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove, this retreat is a charming base for families or travellers.

The lounge oozes comfort and tradition, with books and collectables on display, creating somewhere pleasant to relax morning through to evening.

Join the whole family for some quality time in the dining area, equally as impressive, with seating for eight people, a woodburning stove, and a piano to really set the scene.

The kitchen brings a fresh feel to the cottage, with whitewashed units and a country overtone, neighboured by an equipped utility area.

The next floor is a characterful haven, offering three different room styles, each boasting their own personality, with access to the modernised family bathroom.

After a peaceful night's sleep, why not enjoy a moment or two on the delightful sunny patio, or tour the village, from which to explore the quiet and less frequented Vale of Lorton which includes Buttermere, Loweswater and Crummock.

Also, Keswick is only 7 miles away.

There is an abundance of walking opportunities directly from the door and close by Whinlatter Forest is home to a whole host of activities including Go-Ape tree top adventure on the Whinlatter Pass, mountain biking and orienteering to name just a few.

There is no wonder that once discovered, holidaymakers choose to return to the area year after year.

About the location

LORTON

Braithwaite 4.3 miles; Cockermouth 6 miles; Keswick 7 miles.

Lorton is a village in the district of Allerdale, in Cumbria and is made up of two small villages – Low Lorton and High Lorton, both of which are nestled at the northern end of the Vale of Lorton. Surrounded by the mountains such as Grasmoor, Hopegill Head and Whiteside it is a perfect destination for exploring a number of hillwalks and visitors are encouraged to visit the 12th century St. Cuthbert’s church. Lorton itself is relatively untouched by tourism and yet is only approximately 4 miles away from Cockermouth, which offers access to the A66 road. Other nearby settlements include Loweswater and Brigham. The Whinlatter Pass road offers a scenic drive and connects Lorton with Braithwaite. Within an easy drive the nearby town of Cockermouth has plenty of places to eat and drink and is of course famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. A great location whatever you choose to do.
