  • "A beautiful location in a quiet village."

The cottage itself is quite compact, but would easily suit 2 adults and 2 kids, 4 adults would be pushing it a bit. The kitchen is very compact, but has a good amount of storage. Fridge with freezer compartment, washing machine, microwave, toaster and kettle. The lounge/dining room is cosy and comfortable, but only has a sofa big enough for 2. The conservatory has a very comfortable 2 seater sofa and on a warm day with the windows open it's easy to doze off. The main bedroom has a double bed which takes up a lot of the space as the far wall of the room angles in towards the head of the bed. Still, comfortable, but no room for stuff on bedside tables. The second bedroom has 2 single beds and a chest of drawers. Again, very compact with about 1.5ft between the 2 beds. Bathroom is nice, a decent size and nicely presented. The only problem is the shower which has a dodgy control. When you check in the welcome pack asks you not to touch the temperature control, but I accidentally caught it with my elbow and spent 5 minutes trying to get the temperature of the water back down to a useable one. One bit of advice, if more than one of you need a shower or bath hit the boost button for hot water before you go in for yours, so it starts to heat ready for the next person. I learned from a couple of hot-warm-cold showers. Had visits from the wood pigeon, at least one red squirrel, a number of hedgehogs (you'll see them at night if you open the front door) and even a woodpecker!! Have stayed in a few places around the lakes and would definitely look to book here again.

  • "Groom Cottage is a neat little cottage."

It is rather smaller than we anticipated from the description online, which caused some inconvenience to two octogenarians!

............... What a lovely place, the cottage itself was delightful and the area lovely. Everything you need is there, and more. Spotlessly clean too.. Totally relaxing, off the road so very safe and set in a quiet countryside village. Would happily recommend to others. We hope to come back in the future.

Thanks for your positive feedback and thank you for being excellent guests and leaving the property just as you found it, that is so helpful. Property Owner

  • "Would suggest that the cottage is marketed as 2 adults and 2 young children."

4 adults would be a squash. Property was beautiful and setting amazing. Loved the place. Really enjoyed our holiday.

  • "The cottage was in a perfect, quiet location with easy access to main roads."

The kitchen was very small, just room for one person and the bedrooms were also very cramped. Having said that, it was adequate for just the two of us and would recommend it for a couple but not a group of four.

  • "Cosy cottage which was extremely comfortable."

Looked even better in reality than it had in the advertising. From here we went kayaking and hillwalking. Lorton is a lovely village that we have often chosen to stay in because it is off the beaten track. This cottage is one we will return to.

  • "The cottage was very comfortable and well equipped."

The bedrooms were very small and no proper storage in the twin room. The kitchen was well equipped. If you have a dog it is worth noting that the garden is not enclosed. Overall we bad a great time

  • "This cottage is one of the best we have stayed in!"

Very clean, comfortable, and cosy. The location is great, many walks straight from door, and lots of info provided by the owners about the area. We took our two dogs (free of charge!) - one is a Labrador Retriever and the other is a Labrador, so quite big dogs and we still found that we had enough space without tripping over each other! The cottage has a very calm atmosphere and is the perfect place to relax and recharge. We will be returning in a different season!

  • "Lovely little cottage everything in it you needed, was small but comfortable and clean."

Could walk to local pub about a mile and a small shop less than half a mile. Cockamouth was only 5 miles away. Good bus service if you did,nt want to use a car. Some beautiful walks near by. Groom Cottage also had lots of books on the area which my husband and l enjoyed reading. We will go back to Groom Cottage another year a week was,nt long enough.

  • "The cottage was as advised, and the furniture and fittings were of a superior standard."

Although a small cottage it had everything we needed. The amount of books and literature about everything regarding the lakes was exceptional. When we got home we had a message from the owner thanking us for leaving the cottage in such a clean and tidy condition. All in all a lovely cottage in a lovely location.

About the location

LORTON

Braithwaite 4.3 miles; Cockermouth 6 miles; Keswick 7 miles.

Lorton is a village in the district of Allerdale, in Cumbria and is made up of two small villages – Low Lorton and High Lorton, both of which are nestled at the northern end of the Vale of Lorton. Surrounded by the mountains such as Grasmoor, Hopegill Head and Whiteside it is a perfect destination for exploring a number of hillwalks and visitors are encouraged to visit the 12th century St. Cuthbert’s church. Lorton itself is relatively untouched by tourism and yet is only approximately 4 miles away from Cockermouth, which offers access to the A66 road. Other nearby settlements include Loweswater and Brigham. The Whinlatter Pass road offers a scenic drive and connects Lorton with Braithwaite. Within an easy drive the nearby town of Cockermouth has plenty of places to eat and drink and is of course famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. A great location whatever you choose to do.
