  • "We loved the cottage but couldn`t work out the underfloor heating in the kitchen"

  • "The cottage was lovely."

We had a very comfortable stay and had no complaints at all about the property. Kitchen facilities were excellent. Although comfortable, we found the bed a little on the soft side for us. One issue for dog owners to note is that there is no secure garden area to let dogs out. Early morning and night time wees involve getting dressed and going for a quick walk around the village. This is clear from the property info but we found it a bit of an inconvenience.

It’s located in the peaceful village of bassenthwaite, a lovely pub is just yards away. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom modern, the kitchen a great size. The owners Adrian and Susan are very friendly and approachable. Would definitely stay again!

  • "We have just returned home after a wonderful stay at Ashness."

The cottage is lovely - comfortable, clean and very well equipped. We were really pleased and have had a fantastic stay. The bed was really comfortable. The lounge is lovely and the kitchen has everything you need. I'd read the recent review about damp, and was slightly worried before we went, but there was absolutely no damp or damp smell in the cottage. The village is lovely and a super base for stunning walks in the local area. We would highly recommend this property and location. Thank you for a wonderful and relaxing stay.

We had a very relaxing time. Great location for great days out. The access to the cottage is very easy to find, just follow the instructions, plenty parking close by. We had no issues at all with our stay. We will definitely rebook. We met Adrian the owner, he is very friendly, approachable and made us feel welcome. Thank you so much!

  • "I would like to say how disappointed we both are."

What was meant to be a little weekend break, combined with a special family celebration nearby turned out to be a massive let-down. Upon arrival at the cottage we found a dehumidifier and a piece of paper with instructions, as well as a few mini dehumidifier boxes in the bedroom, please see pictures attached. Being asthmatic made it worse. Had I been aware of these damp issues, combined with a strong moldy damp smell, I would have not booked this cottage. We looked for alternatives but there was nothing to suit our needs as in no pet friendly local alternatives available at such short notice. Having made bookings with Sykes Cottages previously it is even more disappointing that this property slipped through the net and does not meet the usual high standards. It is fair to say though that apart from the damp issues, otherwise the cottage is really nice, with quality towels and bedding provided, a very cosy living room and a well equipped kitchen. The power of the electric shower is not great, however, it still works well enough. With the owners living above the property, you can hear them walking around but that is not a big problem. We bought some air freshers for the bedroom and used the dehumidifier as advised but still, it really spoilt our stay.

Dear Guests, really sorry to hear your comments & understand your disappointment in finding anything that was unexpected or below par for Sykes Cottages. The property has been fully damp proofed throughout in 2021, and has a brand new heating system ( radiators) with underfloor heating to kitchen & bathroom. The de humidifier is offered to our guests during the winter period when the opening of windows may not be welcome due to the cold outside. Its purpose is only to avoid asking guests to open the bedroom windows, as the windows do not have trickle vents & there are solid walls dating from the 1700's. Additionally, we check each week that there is no smell or feeling of damp, we know this is super important to our guests & we run the heating all winter whether the cottage is occupied or not. Please do be assured that we would have been happy to do whatever was needed to support a pleasurable stay at Ashness. We will take on board comments regarding damp smell in the bedroom, but there is no undeclared damp issue, just a cottage with solid walls that has been fully renovated to a very high standard. • "A home from home, tastefully decorated and clean, with lots of nice touches (books, games etc) and everything you need."

Situated in a quiet village, ideally situated for so much good walking with a nice pub just two minutes down the road on foot. We will definitely be booking again because it was perfect for us. Oh, and the owner is a friendly and really helpful chap too. Just a pity we didn’t get the opportunity to say a big THANK YOU!

  • "Really clean, comfortable, warm and well furnished."

I would have liked a hair dryer and written instructions on use of heating, washer etc. However these are just quibbles rather than problems as had I really needed these things the owners were accessible upstairs. Lovely situation. Would recommend.

Was really nice to come back after a long day of hiking and enjoy a hot chocolate in front of the fireplace. Location is in a peaceful area with some great mountain views. Host was welcoming and answered any questions we had and was very accommodating when we were having some car trouble which we really appreciated. Would definitely recommend

  • "Lovely stay (even though we had a fairly rainy week) and friendly owners."

Good pub close by. Good TV, WiFi, mobile phone coverage (for the lake district). Clean and tidy. Comfortable bed, quality bedding. Only downsides are low shower pressure, but we managed fine for the week, and bit of a struggle finding the keysafe but owner answered call immediately and assisted. Bassenthwaite is a really lovely village and friendly locals. Lovely stream with ducks. Keswick short distance away. Nearby Mirehouse (house open Wed and Sat pm only, grounds open every day) and the Lakes distillery (good bistro). Recommend booking Bassenthwaite Lakes Station Cafe (not a working rail line any more) for superb food (daytime only). Lingholm kitchen gardens, excellent cafe. The Pheasant Inn, Keswick has very good home cooked food, and the Sun Inn, Bassenthwaite is good too.
