  • "We stayed at Wrenville back in March 2019 and loved it but at that point noted in the visitors book some issues which needed addressing, these still haven't (almost 5 years on) been addressed which is a shame, because this is a beautiful property."

At this visit 2023/24 it was noted that the properties cleanliness was lacking badly, the windows were filthy inside and out there was thick dust to the skirting boards in both bedrooms also. We had extreme difficultly opening windows for ventilation were needed, this needs addressing and the two bedroom windows themselves do not lock or secure, something we didn't find until the last night’s stay, which was highly concerning has we often left high value items within thempropery when out on long hill walks.

Hi , thank you for taking the time to provide feedback, it is good to receive feedback especially being an owner that lives remote from the property as I do. I have now had a chance to visit the property and can let you know: 1. the two bedroom windows themselves do not lock or secure: It seems the reason you (or others before your visit ) had difficulty locking these was that the top section of the sash windows had not been pushed right back up into the frame so the locks were not meeting in the middle so they could be locked. I have now pushed the top sections up and the windows are secure. 2. We had extreme difficultly opening windows for ventilation : I tried to open all of the windows upstairs and down and all of them opened successfully. I found it was easier to slide the top sash down rather than the bottom sash up for ventilation. 3. The windows were filthy inside: I have arranged for a deep clean including the windows inside on the 10th February Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely week in Wrenville."

It was such a convenient location - easy to walk to the shops/pubs and with a lovely view of the river, park and hills, and also easy to drive into various areas of the northern Lakes (we managed to finish our last 6 Wainwrights in Borrowdale and Patterdale, as well as a day out in Grasmere). Inside was well-equipped and very clean, with a powerful hot shower which we really appreciated after walking on the hills. Having a car-parking space next to the property was also such a bonus. The slight downside was the traffic noise, but that is inevitable being next to a main road and a necessary trade-off for the location and convenience. The information folder in the property could do with updating - the info on recycling and bins is out of date and there were no instructions for the electric fire (despite advice from the office that it needed a remote we still never got it working). We didn't need it for heat as the central heating kept us warm but it would have been nice for ambiance on Christmas Day!

  • "A lovely light airy accommodation and very convenient for going into Keswick."

It was clean and uncluttered and well equipped. It was very hot while we were there and for us the downside was having no pleasant place to sit outside and the noise of the busy road when we had windows open. There was also no paper and cardboard recycling container. 13.5 tog quilts on beds were far to hot and uncomfortable.

Thank you for your comments. As the property is a commercial business and not a private residence, the waste is collected by a private company that sort through all waste from one bin and separating at their depo. We are glad that you enjoyed the accommodation and it's locality. We will update the housekeeping team to review the duvet weight. Lakes Cottage Holidays Owner Relations Expert Property Owner

  • "Really enjoyed our stay."

The good weather meant we weren't housebound and given it was only 4 days we ate out every night. Happy to take the bins around on Monday evening but the previous guest had left 3 black bags full of rubbish and a full black bin. I got one in a neighbours bin...the others weren't taken. Consequently, when I placed one in our bin it left little room for our rubbish when we left, though we didn't make much. It still meant we left the property with a bin bag that was there when we arrived! One of the blinds we couldn't open because the string was broken so we left all of them as we found them..just in case...All minor quibbles and we really enjoyed our stay.

  • "This is the third time we have stayed in Wrenville in the last 18 months and we were a little disappointed to discover that some of the previous (minor) issues still exist."

    1. The Venetian blinds on the windows at the back of the house all need repairs to one or both of the cords as does the blind in the double bedroom. 2. The cutlery basket in the dishwasher needs replacing, many of the sections have big holes in the bottom which the cutlery falls through. 3. The plug chain in the kitchen sink has been broken ever since we have been going to the house. A small thing but does mean it is very difficult to remove the plug, usually had to employ a fork to pull the plug. 4. The wooden gate into the rear yard is starting to become unusable. The top hinge has come away from the wall and the inside part of the latch has disappeared, leaving a couple of sharp screws projecting on the inside of the gate. The gate can only be secured from the yard side by means of a suitable stone wedged under the gate. It cannot be secured from the outside. It is possible that these things haven’t been raised before and they barely impacted on our stay but felt time should be taken to raise them now.

  • "This house is advertised as having a patio/garden."

It doesn't. It has a small, dark and dingy back yard, with a gate you can't lock which is held shut by a rock. This is also where the bins live. It is not a pleasant space to sit in at all. Also, the house is on the Main Street which leads into Keswick, so handy for all you would want, but also extremely busy at almost all hours and very, very noisy - this should be made clear to anyone thinking they are coming to the lakes for some walking, then relaxing afterwards at home. It is unlikely to happen. The shower would not drain when we arrived. We had to buy and then put 2 bottles of bathroom drain unblocker through it to free it up. I do not expect to have to do this in a holiday rental. Also, the middle blind in the living room window that faces the back yard is broken, as are the blinds in both bedrooms, they don't freely or easily go up or down on the pulley. The storage drawer in the kitchen will not close properly and constantly catches the freezer door. The bottom line is this house has lots of potential, but needs a deep clean and some TLC. It is not up to scratch for the money charged. We have paid less for better holiday rentals all over the UK.

We enjoyed lovely walks and meals locally and it was an excellent base to start our travels to further away attractions. The only negative is that the bedrooms face onto a relatively busy road which was not mentioned in the write up. The location of the property from the beautiful park opposite, the town of Keswick, and Derwentwater however, does make up for this.

The cottage had everything we could have wanted; it was warm, had all the mod cons and very comfortable. If you want a cottage in a quiet wee hamlet then this isn't the cottage for you. This is the filthiest house we have ever had, it had to be seen to believed I have never been so disgusted in my life. Many many photos were taken of all the muck and mess that was in in the house,. This was supposed to be a high end property at £675 per week, nothing was high end ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I complained to Sykes Cottages and sent all the photos which they agreed was dreadful. The owner would not respond when Sykes tried to contact him, not surprising he’s got his money he doesn’t care. Sykes them selves have been extremely helpful and have resolved this to my satisfaction. It won’t stop my using Sykes as we’ve had many cottages booked through them, just hope they consider not working with this owner and letting him pull down the good reputation Sykes have.

  • "This property could be really very good, but is let down by a few problems, which should be an easy fix."

Firstly, the property was not as clean as we would have expected. The kitchen was very grubby, and needs a thorough deep clean. It could do with some of the cupboards repairing too. The windows in the property were filthy too, spoiling the views it brags about having. Some of the window blinds didn't work properly, especially the main bedroom one, which could not be closed, and it let a lot of light in. But the main problem with this property is the noise. We appreciate it is on a main road, but the windows are inadequate. They need to be at least double glazed, to help with the noise. Even passing pedestrians sounded like they were in the room. Someone previously suggested using ear plugs, which we did, but they are not a perfect solution, and are not something we found comfortable in using. A real shame, because otherwise the location for Keswick and surrounding area is perfect.

  • "Unfortunately the maintenance of the property was below expectations."

The property commanded top price as it looks to be of a very high standard, and I was happy to pay the extra as it looked so lovely. Lots of things were broken, including the main cooker, dvd player, fire, and no hot water to the lovely deep bath. The edging under the cupboards in the kitchen had fallen off and was just lying in the kitchen area, 2 window blinds were broken, a towel rail in the kitchen was broken and one of the large kitchen floor cupboards would not stay shut. The dust bins outside were full to overflowing. I did go to the office mid week with a list of problems, and staff were very polite to me, I was expecting to be contacted so that a maintenance person could at least come and see the problems but I wasn't. However I again spoke to the office personnel when I gave back the key, and they did go out to the property straight away. When I got home I did have an email acknowledging my concerns and giving me a named person who was dealing with the issues. The area is amazing, despite the inclement weather we had a lovely visit. We come to the lakes every year as we love it so much, usually staying in much cheaper properties, but as it is my 60th birthday I thought I would go for something more luxurious, so I was rather disappointed, and would not stay in Wrenville again.
