  • "Perfect holiday home!"

We have had the most relaxing week at Sherriff. The house was perfect for our multi-generational family. Ground floor for the grandparents with every home comfort imaginable. Upstairs, another self-contained flat that the younger ones enjoyed. Perfect location for Keswick, Glenridding and Pooley Bridge. Excellent walking in every direction. We had mixed weather but it didn’t spoil our fantastic week in the Lakes. We will be back and highly recommend this lovely property.

  • "Great house, great views, loads of room."

It was a four bedroom house, but one twin room was oddly locked. The house is close to the A66, so sitting outside is quite noisy if you want to have quiet drink, inside the noise is minimal. An EV charge point would be a great addition, even a 3kW socket.

We honestly could find no fault with any aspect of the premises. The cottage has a unique design which we found catered for our specific needs. Val, the home owner was friendly, very helpful and ensured that we were well looked after. The amenities and general cleanliness was exceptional. Sherriff is an ideal cottage for anyone wishing to tour the Northern Lakes and as a result we are looking forward to returning.

  • "An outstanding stay in this lovely house in the great location to explore this part of the Lake District."

The under floor heating is just the best thing after a cold day waking in the fells. The house is so big you never feel on top of each other, which is nice if you need some alone time staring at the incredible views from the upstairs windows. The house was very clean and I’ve never seen such organised and well stocked kitchen cupboards. Even the cutlery was lined up in the drawers! We had a great weekend in this part of the world in an amazing house.

We had a great week and had plenty of opportunity to explore the local area. Really nice to be so close to Blencathra! Short drive to both Keswick and Penrith for grocery shopping. As a group we are all keen cooks and was slightly disappointed with the kitchen equipment, in particular the lack of chopping boards and a fairly average oven. I think a small amount of outlay could make the experience for those who prefer to cook for themselves much better. Also just to note it is quite close to a main road, which wasn’t overall that disturbing, but when particularly quiet was noticeable.

The property

Sheriff is a modern, detached house mid-way between Keswick and Ullswater, with countryside views.

The front door opens to the sitting room with comfortable leather sofas and armchairs arranged around the woodburning stove and TV, with beautiful south facing views across the surrounding countryside.

The open plan kitchen, dining area is to the rear of the cottage.

The well-equipped kitchen is fitted with contemporary units and patio doors open from here onto the patio.

The first of the bedrooms is on the ground floor with views out the front garden and fields beyond, offering a king-sized bed.

The second bedroom is also on the ground floor with twin beds.

There is an adjacent bathroom with whirlpool bath, basin and WC.

Stairs lead to the first floor where there is a small second sitting room, or reading room, with beautiful views to Blencathra and the north, and has sofa and breakfast table and a small butler’s kitchenette with sink, fridge and kettle.

The third bedroom faces north across the fields and has a king size bed and en-suite bathroom.

The final bedroom, facing south is presented with twin beds and an en-suite shower room.

To the rear of the house there is a sheltered patio area with outdoor dining furniture and to the front there is a front garden with lawn and planted borders.

Secure mountain bike storage is available and there is private parking for two cars.

Troutbeck (there are two in the Lake District – this is the one in the north near Keswick) is a small hamlet close to the popular village of Pooley Bridge at the northernmost tip of Ullswater, which has a lovely choice of village pubs, cafes and shops.

The area has a huge selection of footpaths, bridleways and mountain bike trails.

Travelling from the central Lakes over the stunning Kirkstone Pass you will drop down into the beautiful glacial carved landscapes surrounding Ullswater, with villages along its shoreline.

At the southern end of the Lake you will find Glenridding, a popular little village and an excellent base to explore plentiful challenging peaks but especially Helvellyn and Striding Edge.

Ullswater is often thought as the most beautiful of all the lakes in the northern Lake District, being a serpentine body of water snaking a nine-mile course under the lea of magnificent fells, woodland and mountain.

Much of the lake, its shore and surrounding fells are accessible to explore, where you will find some of the finest walks and water activities, along with the amenities of the lakeside villages.

You will be able to ramble all day with magnificent views.

A gentler walk is Aira Force, probably the most famous of the Lake District waterfalls.

The main force falls some 70ft below a stone footbridge - so don't forget your camera.

Getting on the water is easy.

You can take a boat cruise on a beautiful steamer from Pooley Bridge or Glenridding, with piers also at Howtown & Aira Force.

It's a great way to see the lake from a different perspective.

Boat hire is readily available, both at Glenridding and Pooley Bridge, with kayaks, sailing boats and little motorboats, along with hire of fishing tackle and licenses.

In the other direction, Keswick is a bustling market town set between the peaks of Skiddaw and the gentle beauty of Derwentwater.

With good shops, a host of restaurants and cafes, along with museums, a theatre, cinema and leisure centre.

The A591 winds its way from Keswick to Grasmere and on to Ambleside and from there branching off to Coniston and such delights as the Langdale Valley and Hawkshead.
