  • "Our fourth stay at this lovely cottage."

Excellent location with easy access to local walks, Ullswater and so many other beautiful parts of the Lakes. Wonderful cottage for the winter, cosy and well-equipped. Highly recommended.

  • "Quality fittings and furniture in a lovely cottage in a wonderful location but let down by poor cleaning."

Dirty untidy cupboards, very smelly beds in the back bedroom, filthy dining and lounge table tops, dirty placemats and a broken freezer door meaning a third of the compartment was unusable due to ice build up. Had to clean all surfaces and wash all pots and cutlery that we were going to use. Not a good start to a holiday!

The facilities were first class and the cottage was spotless and very comfortable. The location is stunning.

Thank you for your kind words - we hope you will return to the cottage . Leila and Daya Property Owner

  • "The cottage is very well situated in the northern lakes close to Ullswater."

Although only a couple of miles off the A66 it feels remote and peaceful. The views from the garden are lovely. The cottage itself is well equipped with everything you need to self cater. The appliances are good quality and user friendly. A lot of the furniture appeared to be fairly new and the beds were very comfortable. It's good to see a porperty maintained to this standard. It was perfect for us as a couple and I would definitely book again when next visiting the area.

  • "No contact from the owner though out the stay."

No mention of adjoining property in the cottage listing. No warning about taking recycling waste away with us, but surely a green bin outside would not hurt? Onward travel with a black bag in the car as well as the luggage is not ideal.

Really easy to get to but you feel miles away. Loads of great walks and cycles on your doorstep and only a short drive to Keswick. The cottage is really cosy and very well equipped with all the extras you can think of and more. Really hope to visit again.

We were very appreciative of the bottle of wine and water on arrival too. All in all completely delighted and would certainly visit again should the opportunity ever arise.

  • "We arrived after the 3pm arrival time excited to see our cottage only to find the cleaners hadn’t been in."

The toilets had excrement in, the kitchen sink had bits of food in, dirty towels & beds. Unfortunately it set the tone for the whole holiday. Bins were full so anything we put out in bags were ripped open by wildlife & we were left to clear up ours & the previous people’s waste. Beds creaked every time you turned over. The caretaker was unreachable as it was an old number on the website. Really disappointed. When the cleaners finally arrived late it felt like a rushed job & didn’t really feel clean as sofas were covered in feathers/fluff. They said they had got delayed in traffic which was the same route we had to take with no problem?! I’m not one usually to complain but this was supposed to be a rest & holiday following major surgery for cancer. Hence it didn’t feel like a holiday.

  • "Before leaving I called Sykes cottages to enquire about having a cot, unfortunately I couldn't speak to anyone (I was on hold for aaages!"

) and had to call the owner of the property directly. The owner was helpful and I then received an email from sykes cottages, I did everything online and received confimation email and very clear instructions on keys and access to the property from sykes but when I had to speak directly to someone it was a little harder. With regards to the property it was just like in the pictures and we had a wonderful stay! We will be using sykes cottages for our next holiday.

  • "We had an issue with the post code which would have led our sat have to Matterdale End about 1 mile away I wonder if there had been a confusion with another of your properties which is there."

Fortunately the written instructions given were mostly accurate although they should state "the property is opposite Nab End farm" and is only 1/4 mile up the lane. We overshot on narrow lanes which is not ideal after a long journey. Once we had found the cottage it was amazing, so comfortable and in an ideal quiet, secluded situation for walkers and nature lovers with walks and wildlife on the doorstep.

  • "The house was cold on arrival."

The air source heating was not controllable, although there is a wood burner and a small fan heater. We would rate this cottage 10/10, but for the heating. The listing didn't give exact location.

About the location

POOLEY BRIDGE

Penrith 6 miles.

The picturesque village of Pooley Bridge sits on the northerly edge of Lake Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. The name Pooley came to be due to the forming of a large pool, which was left by the fast flowing River Eamont, and the word Bridge was later added when a bridge, which is now 250 years old, was built over the river. Pooley Bridge has many traditional inns and tempting tea rooms, plus the Ullswater Steamers depart from the village, from where a tranquil cruise down the lake to the villages of Glenridding and Howtown can be enjoyed. There are numerous walks with breathtaking views nearby, plus a short walk up to Dunmallard Hill reveals fascinating Iron-Age remains, whilst the towns of Penrith and Keswick are within driving distance. Pooley Bridge is an ideal base for a cottage holiday stay in the stunning Lake District.
