The views were amazing ever changing and there were daily visits from a red squirrel and birds that we’ve not seen before. There was a lovely welcome gift from our hosts Lizzie and Johnathan and they made us feel very welcome. For us it was an excellent base to explore our favourite part of The Lakes.

  • "Fabulous cottage in a stunning location."

Red squirrels and buzzards were a regular in the garden, which had amazing views of the fells. The rain was relentless but did not bother us knowing that we would be returning to the cosy cottage. A good pub within a 10 minute walking distance. Lots of walks from the doorstep, including Aira Falls. Perfect, thank you.

Getting cold and blown on our walks and coming back to the lovely warmth and comfort of the cottage. Friendly attentive, but not intrusive hosts. Lucy’s Wood. Watching so many birds come and go from the feeders and listening to their song.

Owners, Lizzie & Jonathan are very welcoming, attentive and friendly. Loved every second, very sad to have to leave. Stay was made even more magical and memorable by having mulled wine and cake on arrival. Thank you for everything. Very much hope to be back one day.

  • "The cottage is warm and comfortable, set in spectacular surroundings."

It is ideal for those wishing for a peaceful, relaxing break. It is very quiet. The next-door owners are not intrusive and there is really nothing but the wind and wildlife for company. We would have liked a bread bin and a larger frying pan.

The cottage has been done out to very high standards and was extremely clean & comfortable. Every room had a nice fragrance when we walked around. Clear instructions were available on how to use the equipment & everything needed was there for our use. The scenery all around the cottage is beautiful & there are lot of places to go walking. It's location is very handy for visiting lots of places, therefore, we had a lovely holiday with plenty to do. We would certainly recommend Swallowdale to our family & friends & would love to go back again in the near future. A bottle of wine & chocolates were left for us which was a lovely guesture from Lizzie & Jonathan.

  • "Great cottage; excellent view; very, very peaceful."

A good location being between Penrith and Keswick. Walks from the door. Red squirrels on the feeders. Couldn't ask for more. Very minor negatives which in no way were detrimental to the holiday experience: No shower 10 minutes to Aira Force BY CAR for us 45 minute walk (which was better for us but the 10 minutes to waterfall is misleading)

  • "Amazing!!!"

Within 10 minutes of arriving we were sat watching red squirrels on the feeder hanging outside the lounge window. The views are wonderful, the ever changing Lakes weather means that the view is never the same. Everything you need is here, walks from the doorstep, a short distance to Aira Falls and Ullswater - a most tranquil lake. We completed the Ullswater Way, amongst other walks, and returned to the cottage after each stage to a welcome bath to soothe the aches, along with a glass of wine to relax whilst watching the wildlife. The owners were very welcoming although we only saw them briefly as they were leaving the following day for a holiday of their own, the welcome gift of wine and chocolates were very much appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at Swallowdale.

The location is great, right on top of some excellent hills, with easy paths down to waterfalls and a lake. Travelling for walks further afield is easy too, with Blencathra only a fifteen minute drive. The cottage is small but beautiful, and tastefully decorated; the kitchen is great, and the living room / garden are incredibly comfortable to relax in after a day's walk. Our dog was well catered for, and the house is wonderfully quiet at night. We were lucky with the weather, but even on a drizzly day we'd be very happy to stay indoors and watch the world go by here.

I would certainly recommend the property for anyone visiting the area. Our dog was made very welcome and there were dog biscuit treats waiting for him. The location was perfect.

The cottage was beautifully decorated and very cosy with underfloor heating which the dogs loved lazing on. It was nice to see the birds and red squirrels on the patio at breakfast right outside the window. The only slight downside for us personally was that there was no shower but the bathroom was beautiful nonetheless. Highly recommend but make sure you follow the website directions as we got lost relying on the satnav!

The property

This barn conversion is located on the hillside of Matterdale, just a short walk from Aira Force near Ullswater.

Swallowdale is a one bedroom property with character features and stunning walks from your doorstep, making it an ideal spot for a secluded couple's getaway.

The sitting room has a host of features to warm your heart and soul.

The wood burner keeps you toasty after a day walking in the fells, and the gloriously high glass door and windows enhance the cosy romantic feel of the cottage.

The refurbishment has seen maximum use made of the kitchen space, with built-in appliances, Belfast sink and all the features required of a modern kitchen.

There's even a table for two dining set at which to enjoy your meals.

Upstairs, the stunning bedroom with king size bed has been lovingly furnished with padding on the low central beam to avoid any unwanted bruises.

The cottage is attached to the owner's farmhouse, so the stunning location is there for you to enjoy from the private fields, including a small garden with truly remarkable fell views all of your own.

Matterdale itself is a parish district, so a short journey is required to reach local amenities, but this gives you the opportunity to call in at one of the many local villages such as Dockray to sample the best of their shops and restaurants.

Activities are on your doorstep at Swallowdale.

Aira Beck leads to Aira Force, with the beauty of its waterfall, and if you continue to Ullswater, water activities abound.

For a more gentle option, perhaps take a cruise on the lake, or head out of the district to the charming neighbouring town of Penrith.

Peacefully positioned in the owner's farmland, Swallowdale offers unique views of the Matterdale Fells and is an ideal location for a couple to enjoy a romantic getaway.

About the location

POOLEY BRIDGE

Penrith 6 miles.

The picturesque village of Pooley Bridge sits on the northerly edge of Lake Ullswater in the Lake District National Park. The name Pooley came to be due to the forming of a large pool, which was left by the fast flowing River Eamont, and the word Bridge was later added when a bridge, which is now 250 years old, was built over the river. Pooley Bridge has many traditional inns and tempting tea rooms, plus the Ullswater Steamers depart from the village, from where a tranquil cruise down the lake to the villages of Glenridding and Howtown can be enjoyed. There are numerous walks with breathtaking views nearby, plus a short walk up to Dunmallard Hill reveals fascinating Iron-Age remains, whilst the towns of Penrith and Keswick are within driving distance. Pooley Bridge is an ideal base for a cottage holiday stay in the stunning Lake District.
