  • "Lovely place to have a relaxing break."

Cottage was one of the best we have stayed in over the years. The area was very peaceful and scenic with friendly locals. Thank you Tracey for keeping us warm. Just a shame that the local pub closed whilst we were there but there was one within walking distance from the cottage.

  • "Hesketh cottage is a beautifully converted cottage with all the home comforts."

It is in a great setting for wildlife and bird watching and walks from the doorstep. The cottage is very clean and very well equipped with everything you could need. It was warm and cosy in the evenings. Two great showers and lots of hot water. We went to the local pub twice and they made and us welcome and the food was good. I would not hesitate to recommend this cottage and we hope to return.

  • "Tracey was a great host."

Replied to messages quickly & couldn't do enough for us (not that we had any issues!). The snug was superb & meant that our children had their own space if they needed it. Clean & well presented property. Netflix on the telly proved to be a winner with the kids too. We really enjoyed our stay & would highly recommend this cottage. Thanks Tracey!!

  • "Lovely quiet, peaceful location, very relaxing, which helped to recharge our batteries!"

The cottage was brilliant, really loved everything about it - very clean, great kitchen and en suites really suited our needs, all so comfortable without any fuss. Tracey was very helpful and showed us round and we knew how to contact her if there were any problems, which there weren’t! Loved walking from the cottage every day watching all the birds feeding on the sand. Not a place to stay if you want a hectic nightlife which made it perfect for us! So very calming. Will definitely be returning! Thank you so much Tracey.

  • "We had booked the cottage last minute Due to the ongoing Covid situation."

The owner met us on arrival and walked us through the cottage. She was extremely helpful and lived locally should any problems arise. Nothing did. The property was so well equipped kitchen wise and the owner had provided a large amount of cleaning equipment which was good to note in the current climate. The showers in both bedrooms were great. Very powerful and hot water a plenty. Log burners in both downstairs rooms which we didn't get the chance to useas the weather was so good. There is a nice little seating area outside which was not on the photographs. We spent a good number of hours out here on an evening watching the sun set. Such a peaceful place to relax and literally get away from it all. There is a pub in this village, and one in bowness which takes about 15 mins to walk in too. Both were fine and friendly. Lots of walks and nature reserves close by. All in all we had a fantastic stay. Don't hesitate to book if you need a rest after the last 15 months of craziness. Highly recommend it and both we and family looking to revisit later in the year.

This is a superb find for romantics and small families to call home as they enjoy the Cumbrian coast, renowned for its walking and bird watching opportunities, as well as the Scottish borders and the Lake District National Park awaiting to be explored.

Push open the front door to discover the spacious open-plan living area, where the woodburning stove set within a handmade brick reveal is a striking element to the room; another being the inviting seating arrangement, which is awaiting to be sunk into at the end of a bracing day on the coast.

Step across the beautiful laminate flooring and up a small step to find the contemporary kitchen, boasting sleek units with solid worktops, creating a lovely contrast against the intricate pattern of the ornate splash back tiles.

The kitchen comes well-equipped with everything you could possibly need to cater for yourselves, and is accompanied by the dining table for relishing in family-favourite dishes and the company of your loved ones.

From here, slip through the door to discover the utility room, a space which works in synergy with the kitchen, housing a fridge and laundry equipment, as well as a large worktop for keeping the kitchen clutter free for the chef of the group.

Relax and unwind into your evening by venturing into the separate sitting room, where you can light up the woodburning, cosy up on the sofa and delve into a good book or browse the channels of the Smart TV.

From here, stairs take you to the master suite, boasting a sumptuous double bed, contemporary furnishings, a Smart TV and a sleek en-suite shower room, whilst the second bedroom comprises of a single bed and a trundle bed, benefitting from an en-suite shower room too.

If you can tear yourself away from this heavenly oasis, take a leisurely stroll to the nearby pub, which is perfect for evening meals or travel a short distance to the neighbouring village of Bowness-On-Solway, where you will find another pub and bistro, a tearoom and a shop for picking up the essentials.

Within striking distance is the historical landmark of Hadrian’s Wall, which was built by the Roman Empire and stretches from the village to Wallsend near Newcastle for some 73 miles, providing breath-taking views as you walk and delve into the history of the area’s past.

Avid ramblers and twitchers will be delighted by the Solway Coast AONB, where the dramatic sand dunes play host to some of the most important habitats in Europe, with a plethora of viewpoints for catching a glimpse of oystercatchers, curlew, golden and grey plover, lapwing and knot.

The city of Carlisle lies slightly further afield, where you will find even more places to eat and drink, as well as attractions including its historic castle, the World in a Miniature Museum and The Lane Shopping Centre, providing something for all ages.

If you are feeling adventurous, travel to the borders of Scotland, where you can visit the romantic Gretna Green or travel in the opposite direction to find the Lake District National Park, where an abundance of outdoor action can be enjoyed.

Bring your loved ones to Hesket House Cottage to share a fun-filled break.

About the location

Wigton 10 miles; Carlisle 13 miles.

The village of Bowness-on-Solway lies within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to the west of the city of Carlisle. The village has a pub and a tea room and Hadrian’s Wall stretches from the village to Wallsend near Newcastle for some 73 miles, with the walk being defined as a ‘National Trail’. The surrounding area is rich in bird life visiting the sand dunes, salt marsh, shingle beds, and peat mosses, and there are many viewpoints and lay-bys, perfect for spotting the waders: oystercatchers, curlew, golden and grey plover, lapwing, knot, dunlin, bar-tailed and black-tailed godwit, redshank, and turnstone. In 1869 a rail line, the Solway Junction Railway, was opened between Bowness and Annan in Scotland, connecting to the Maryport and Carlisle railway. The 1 mile and 176 yard long iron girder viaduct across the water was damaged by an ice build-up in 1875, and again in 1881. It was repaired and continued as a passenger train until 1914 when it became a freight train until 1921, before finally being demolished in 1934. Nearby, the market town of Wigton and the city of Carlisle are popular centres for shopping, pubs and restaurants. Wigton also has a weekly market taking place every Friday and also boasts a theatre. The Victorian seaside resort of Silloth is 16 miles away, whilst Keswick and the heart of the Lake District are reached in 40 minutes' by car. A wonderful base for exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
