  • "A great spacious and comfortable property with plenty of room for two."

The listing didn't make a big play of the closeness and view over the estuary so we were rather gobsmacked by how wonderful that was. A bird-watchers paradise with the tide ebbing and flowing, different every time I looked out. Like being in my own personal bird hide all the time we were there.

Thank you for your comments and glad you enjoyed the amazing bird life just outside the window Property Owner

  • "The property was lovely with fantastic views."

Its a shame there was only a fridge with no freezer, which would have been helpful. The only other downside was the WIFI which was very patchy and meant you couldn't watch anything for more than a few minutes before it went off, which is not too bad if you're staying in the summer but in October when the nights are cold and dark it would be nice to stay in and watch something without the WIFI dropping out all the time.

We are glad you liked the beautiful views. We are sorry you didn’t read the particulars about us not having a freezer, it is by choice as we never have the time to defrost it properly between sits so we chose to not have one in the property. Regarding the WiFi it is the best we can do in a fairly rural area, around Silloth and the surrounding area a lot of work is in progress to update our network but this all takes time. Property Owner

Great to have a dedicated parking space, visible from the property. The outstanding feature is the view across the Solway with the tide constantly ebbing and flowing. If you enjoy bird watching and coastal walks this is the place for you. Provision of information about the local area is excellent and the books by Scott and Buchan, plus others about the Wall etc is a nice touch. The tea, coffee, milk and granola bars also appreciated.

I would never tire of the view from all of the rear windows, out over the water to Scotland. It has all of the facilities to ensure that visitors have a perfect stay. It was comfortable, very clean (which we found very reassuring at a time when Covid cases are around 45,000 per day) and perfectly situated for all that we wanted to do. The walks straight out of the front door (north to Grune Point (c.1.5 miles) and south into Silloth (c.1.5 miles) ) are not taxing for a keen rambler, but offer the most wonderful views. Keswick, Derwent, Bassenthwaite and more are all in easy travelling distance. Storm Arwen arrived during our stay, but did nothing to dampen our spirits for this fabulous place - it merely changed the scenery for a few days. Our host was helpful and pleasant throughout, with good responses to messages. Thanks for a lovely stay Bev, we very hope to back at some point.

  • "Lovely apartment in a quiet location but not too far from Silloth town centre with nice walks nearby."

We really enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately, there was no freezer or freezer compartment in the fridge preventing ice cold drinks and potential food storage during one of the hottest periods of this year. This prevented us from using wine coolers and our ice block for keeping picnic food cool. All glasses were plastic in which wine does not taste the same as in proper glasses. The television was very small for the size of the living room. These are the only 3 things which we would have preferred to be better and hardly detracted from our experience. However, other people, and certainly a small family with children, could need to be aware of this before they go.

  • "This was a lovely 'escape' as Greenmantle is a comfortable, well equipped apartment right on the shore where the owners couldn't do enough."

. Being ground floor it has a small seating area to the rear and shared access (at the end of the building) to a small 'promenade' which overlooks a shingle/pebble beach. The location is scenic and extremely quiet - Silloth is about 2 miles away and if your going to walk on the beach you need good shoes. Just one thing to be aware of, is that there is no freezer of any size.

, beautifully maintained. We were a little wary as there was no promotional photo of the kitchen, however we need not have been concerned as the kitchen was clean and modern and had everything we needed. The Satnav didn’t take us to quite the right place using the postcode, but fortunately I had previously walked it through on Google Street View. I was anxious that the Tesco delivery driver would find us, but he had been many times before apparently. The sunset views are the best I’ve ever experienced from a holiday cottage.

The property

The charming apartment, Greenmantle, is one of ten dwellings, situated in the middle of The Long House on the ground floor to a peaceful courtyard.

The Long House was once the Greyhound Inn from which a ferry to Annan ran and is presumed to have been the template for Sir Walter Scott's Tavern in "Redgauntlet".

It was by repute, the haunt of smugglers and Border reivers.

The names of some of the dwellings take up this Scott connection, while others including Greenmantle, are associated with the author John Buchan.

The two bedrooms and the sitting room with dining area windows look straight over the Solway Firth to Criffel Hills in Scotland.

On warmer days, the breakwater on that side of the house, is a private area on which to sit right by the shingle shoreline.

This would be a great time to watch the birds, study the tide and the mesmeric sea ebb and flow or to watch the spectacular sunsets in the clear sea air.

The attractive seaside town of Silloth is just two miles away, and offers many amenities as well as being home to a magnificent championship golf course.

Miles of unspoilt coastline afford wonderful opportunities for walking and birdwatching, while the magnificent Northern Lakes are easily accessible.

Situated in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Greenmantle provides a special and comfortable place for a couple or small family wishing to explore this beautiful area and appreciate its fantastic seafront location.

About the location

SKINBURNESS

Silloth 2 mile; Carlisle 23 miles.

Skinburness lies on the shore of the Solway Firth with wonderful views across to Scotland & the hills of Dumfrieshire. Edward I, favoured Skinburness as a naval base and made it a free borough , but the town was laid to waste in 1302, when the sea dyke was breached. The Victorian seaside town of Silloth is an easy stroll along the coast and promenade. There are a number of shops in Silloth (including a Coop and a Spar), a Post Office, a bakery (bread made locally) , an independent butcher and other establishments serving refreshments. There is an amusement arcade and tennis courts and even a Museum of toy soldiers. Silloth Golf Club is a stunning links Championship course, which is very much part of the town, just past the working harbour and Carr’s mill. Abbeytown, 3 miles away, in the other direction, has its own village store and the once important abbey, and now restored, Holme Cultram church. There are wonderful walks to enjoy at Skinburness, right out to Grune point and around Moricambe Bay, or, going the other way through Silloth, along the dunes and the beach to Allonby. The birdlife is prolific and birdwatching opportunities abound. The Vikings introduced Haaf net fishing in the Solway, but there are other fishing prospects. The northern Lakes and fells in the Lake District are only a 30-40 minute drive away, as is Lannercost Priory and Birdoswalde, part of Hadrian’s Wall to the east of Carlisle. This is a superb base in Cumbria for relaxing in peaceful surroundings and also exploring this fascinating part of the British Isles; a veritable, “…place of legend- a place of history.”
