  • "Firstly, its not a Cottage, its a Chalet."

We arrived on the coldest night of this year to discover malfunctioning heating (broken storage heater in lounge) and no instructions as to how to light the gas fire! Freezing cold lounge area that resulted in having to wrap up in blankets to get warm, even after the fire was lit! Telephoned for help and a gentleman arrived and got the fire lit and showed us how to do it, but it took a further 3 visits from the maintenance gentleman before the heater was fixed and it was Tuesday before it started to work. Even the remote control for the TV was temperamental and only worked in fits and starts! A welcome pack would have been much appreciated but we were disappointed not to have one: this is the first time we haven't had one. Not even any washing up liquid or cleaning aids. We found the lounge furniture uncomfortable! The mattresses on the beds were poor quality and lost any comfort after 3 nights. A burst water pipe in the villiage resulted in no water for several hours on Wednesday and a nine mile round trip to purchase some. One of the reasons we were attracted to this property was the fact that it was so close to the beach and had an access gate at the bottom of the garden with a path and steps to get onto the Beach. We were hugely disappointed to see signs and warnings advising not to use it because of the dangerous condition it was in. This was not made clear prior to booking! The only plus points were the Garden and the View from the lounge! I think it would be prudent for future advertising to state this place is definitely not suitable for persons with disability and mobility issues!

  • "I loved my stay thank you!"

I wanted to take the garden home with me. The property was clean and generally comfortable although the large sofa is very uncomfortable to the point of causing back aches. The lounge area is a good size and we were able to erect our large dog crate for them to sleep in. We also bring throws because it is hard to keep them off sofas when they are used to it so even though our little dogs don't moult we cover the sofas with large throws. The property is easy to heat with the lovely log effect gas fire in lounge. Heaters in bedroom. The garden Is big and beautiful with its shapes, sections and range of shrubs and trees. Our dogs loved it. The views are gorgeous. The cooking facilities are excellent. I have been in other Sykes properties that have more welcoming touches whereas this is easy to notice it is a leisure company managing it as it is quite plain. If you come out of season there are no shops around for a few miles so make sure you bring essentials so you can make a cuppa on arrival. A nice touch would be a few teabags, coffee and milk for arrival as once holiday park season ends there are no local amenities. From the property you can have lovely long walks on the beach. There are many walks and attractions that are easily reached by car. It is a lovely cottage in a peaceful location well worth a stay. I would suggest that the heating in main bedroom too high all night at 20c. Also maybe some larger cereal/ soup bowls and side plates as the ones provided are tiny.

Looked spectacular though. It isn't clear that that cottage is surrounded by the Southerness caravan park which is huge. We were there out of season so everything was closed, so it was very peaceful. Not sure that would be the case in the height of summer. The only real negative was that the heater in the bathroom didn't work and it was freezing. Also, it could do with a few finishing touches to make it look a little more homely but enjoyed our short stay.

No heating in the bathroom only a rusty towel rail, the shower head was cable tied to the rail. Adequate utensils in the kitchen but frying pans (of which there was three) all disgusting. Beds were clean and comfy. No mention that the chip shop and convenience store are shut from October to march and no useful information or leaflets. It’s only saving grace is the view.

Views are magnificent, best we've ever had in a holiday rental and we found the cottageto be very clean and comfortable. New carpets had just been fitted in the bedrooms, no doubt in reaction to someones earlier feedback comments so top marks for that. Gardens are large, very well kept and excellent if you have a pooch. The beach being on the doorstep in another big plus. In reaction to another ridiculous negative comment it is actually very difficult to see anybody walking past the cottage on the beach due to it's elevated position. There is a large caravan park near the property but not close enough to be intrusive and certainly didn't bother us at all. Would certainly book again.

It is not the most modern of accommodation, and certain well used, but has all equipment needed for a pleasant stay , and is clean and warm. The garden is a little gem of exploration for dogs, and it's multiple seating areas adds to its attraction. The gate giving access direct down to the beach, is a bonus, for those that are physically able to negotiate a set of steep steps. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. N.B. The garden is not 100% secure for smaller dogs. A nearby resident beagle type dog visited the garden on several occasions, gaining access from the beach side.

On arrival we found that the fences were too low to keep even a small dog in the garden. This was made worse by the fact that the bungalow is on the edge of a large noisy caravan site so people constantly walk past the garden and come right up to the fence when the tide is in. Despite raising this issue with Sykes when we got home we have had to cancel our second week with the loss of deposit. The property has since been re-let!

To be fair we raised a couple of small issues which were mostly dealt with and there was a brand new garden dining set so overall ok. It is advertised as a cottage, in fact it is a mobile home on a large mobile home site. On arrival we found that the kitchen equipment ie; pots, pans oven needed cleaning as did the cupboards. There had been no cleaning with disinfectant wipes on any surface through the property as stated by Lighthouse Leisure in there cleaning email they sent to us prior to occupation. We were very disappointed with this property .

I am sorry that our property did not match your expectations. The property is most certainly not a mobile home but simply a cottage that is not based on a mobile home site as you have mentioned. With reference to your comments about the cleanliness of the property, I would like to assure yourself and our future guests that the property has received nothing but glowing reviews prior and following your stay. I would like to add that had you contacted me during your stay, I would have been more than happy to put things right for you. It was everything and more as described on the website. It was cosy and warm and very clean to walk into. Murphy loved his walks down the steps to the beach as we did of course! We loved watching all the numerous birds feeding as the tide went out and some mornings we were treated to the spectacle of Barnacle Geese flying from the RSPB Mersehead towards Caerlaverock. We had an interesting walk in the Mabie forest after having had coffee at Mabie House Hotel which is open to non residents and reasonably priced for food which, I believe, is excellent quality although we did not have time to sample it. Next time definitely! Very disappointed with Dumfries as it seemed run down in the centre with many shops closed. Sign of the times I suppose for high streets in general sad to say. Dalbeattie was enjoyable with a friendly feel to the place. Some "proper" butchers' shops there too. Nice coffee/lunch stop at Galloway Soup Co. Rockcliffe is a lovely little spot and worth a visit. The coast path runs in front of the cottage and you can walk for miles either way. I gave a lower score for "facilities" mainly because there were no "facilities" open at this time of year and that is how we like it - nice and quiet - but I thought it worth a mention. The pub Paul Jones is open Thursday to Sunday only low season. The nearest shop is in New Abbey and they appear to stock everything and it is always worth supporting local shops. We have already booked for next year!

The position of the cottage is brilliant with uninterrupted views of the beach. There are a lot of other cottages along the shore and a large caravan park too but this wee gem is still very private due to the beautifully maintained garden that has plenty of areas to relax in (weather permitting ) and lots of space for the dogs to roam. The steps down to the beach were a bit steep for the oldest dog but a more accessible track is not far along the road. When the tide is out there's plenty of beach to explore. The cottage is compact, cosy and very comfortable. There's a pub 10 minutes walk away, this is only open Thursday-Sunday in winter though and the nearest shop is a few miles away, so stock up if you visit at this time of year. It was so peaceful and relaxing but we also had access to the facilities on the Lighthouse Leisure complex which was great for my son who loved the pool and the arcade. We planned ahead and got an online Tesco delivery the day we arrived but got fresh meat etc from a local butchers in Dalbeattie. We ate out twice, once at Paul Jones in the village, ok for pub grub and we treated ourselves at the Mabie House Hotel, delicious food, very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, would highly recommend. My only cricism would be the shower. It is just a trickle and the temperature is difficult to get right, it really needs updating. Other than that it was lovely. We got back yesterday and we're going to book again immediately but we're slightly put off by the £68 increase on the same week next year. The weeks either side are considerably cheaper but that's to be expected as it was half term but I'm not sure why the price would increase so much year on year unless significant improvements or refurbishments are planned. The master bedroom has severe damp on the walls. The shower is dreadful. Side gate held shut with a brick and hanging on with one hinge. Very dangerous

About the location

SOUTHERNESS

Castle Douglas 19 miles; Dalbeattie 13 miles; Dumfries 16 miles.

Southerness is a small coastal village established in the late 18th century, which looks out over the Solway Firth, and forms part of the Colvend coast, one of the finest stretches of coastline on the 'Scottish Riviera'. Home to three pubs, two village stores, a leisure centre with a pool at Parkdean and two miles of sandy beaches with sand dunes, rock pools and Gulf Stream warmed waters, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, built in 1748, it has everything you will need for a relaxing holiday. The nearby Criffel Hill rises to 569m, offers wonderful views of the farmland and the sands of the Nith Estuary below, and provides great walking opportunities. The Southerness Championship Golf Course adjoins the village and offers panoramic views of the Solway Firth, the Cumbrian Lake District to the south and the Galloway Hills to the west. A great location, with something to keep everybody occupied.
