The lazy spa wasn’t included in the images, and so when we found it we were pleasantly surprised! Absolutely adored the internal features including; the log burner, the wall hangings and the comfy furniture. The pub was very handy and we dined there on our first night. The staff were really welcoming and they offered a good selection of gluten free options, including a delicious sticky toffee pudding. Last but by no means least was the amazing views. Could sit and look out of the sun rooms at the front of the cottage all day. Loved our stay, and would return.

  • "We had a comfortable stay, and the owners provided a nice welcome basket and milk in the fridge, both of which were appreciated."

There is a log burner in the lounge and there was a good supply of wood to start you off, although we didn’t use it. There is also a hottub at the rear, which we didn’t use so can’t comment on. However there were things we were less happy with and we left a note of these in the cottage for the owners so there would be no surprises in the review. On the plus side the cottage location right on the front with uninterrupted sea view is excellent. The cottage is very roomy, with 3 bedrooms, lounge, sun lounge and dining room, good size bathroom with walk-in shower, and separate bath (plug leaks and lets water out) and roomy kitchen, with washer, dishwasher, oven and microwave. Plenty of towels were provided, as were cleaning materials etc. in the kitchen. There were a few books, games and toys available. We found there was very limited information provided by the owners apart from 3 laminated sheets, which gave limited information about the spa and the Wi-Fi, and parking at the back. We have been used to a lot more information provided by owners when we have stayed in other Sykes cottages, which have included local health services, buses, other local facilities, tips and suggestions etc. There were a number of leaflets for things to do, although some were out of date. We would have found it helpful to have the instructions for all the appliances. There was only a booklet for the microwave. The oven and dishwasher were unfamiliar so instructions would be helpful. The kitchen appears well equipped however we found a number of pans were in need of replacement and were in our view unusable, most had no lids, the oven needed a good clean, and the kettle descaling. Some kitchen gadgets did not work. The splashback tiles were full of grease and oil. The bed was comfortable, although the bed linen was old and worn and would benefit from replacement. The cottage is superficially clean, although the paintwork needs a good washdown, the fireplace wall had obvious patches where marks had been painted over, base of taps in kitchen and bathroom needed cleaning, the plastic plants of which there were many were very dusty. We found the Wi-Fi unreliable, although the owners had set up Netflix on the TV. Streaming any channel was challenging, as quite often the programme buffered, and the Wi-Fi speed varied between less than 1mbps up to 4mbps at best. Whilst we were able to park at the front of the cottage, the parking at the back was inaccessible as the area seemed to be being used as a builders yard. Southerness itself is basically 2 very big caravan parks, with very little in the way of facilities other than a small shop, fish and chip shop, pub and restaurant. Nearest big supermarkets are in Dumfries. We also found a number of Historic Scotland properties were closed following safety inspections, so advice would be check before you go.

  • "Our stay at Solway Cottage was excellent."

The cottage was just right for us and my small grandchildren, they were only there for half the week as they had to return to school in England. However, they loved the cottage, the surrounding area was beautiful and we found plenty to do with them. I didn't realise until we arrived that two bedrooms are adjoined. This wasn't a problem for us with the children as they are very young, but perhaps should be clearer on the property description. The cottage is beautiful inside, very clean, well decorated and equipped. Plenty of towels were supplied for us, nice bed linen also. There was a welcome pack of goodies waiting for us, daffodils in the sitting room and milk in the fridge, very generous. The view from the conservatory was beautiful and because the weather was so good we spent each evening sat around the table, just chatting and admiring the view across the Solway Firth. We were also grateful to the owners for giving us permission to have two dogs with us for three nights of the week. We went to Cairn Holy, Threave Gardens and Estate, Drumlanrig castle, John Paul Jones cottage and museum all well worth a visit, as is the Otter Pool in the Galloway forest. We didn't use the hot tub so I can't comment on that...maybe next time!

  • "Solway cottage is in an amazing location with fantastic views across the Solway."

We watched snow falling over the northern Lake District (while we were bathed in sunshine) and - while Southerness is basically a large caravan park - the cottage itself feels very private. It provided us with a great base to explore the area and there and is much to see - great walks, hidden sandy coves, historic places (though be aware many places don't open til April 1). Inside, the owners have created a cosy, seaside theme and generally its very nicely presented. Yes, it has typical holiday cottage foibles - the wobbly loo seat, doors that don't shut properly (tricky if you're trying to keep a dog out the bedrooms etc., nothing unexpected there. Size-wise it was luxurious for two of us plus our dog Betty and it would have be fine for four - however, it is supposed to sleep 8 - I think given it only has one toilet in the one bathroom, that might be a challenge! The only thing that was a real negative (and we weren't going to include this in the review but we did text the owner privately and didn't even receive an acknowledgement, so frankly we decided to go public) was the questionable cleanliness of the hot tub. When we arrived we were all excited about hopping in - because it was a glorious afternoon - went to look at the control panel and the cup-holders which are underneath it, were full of cigarette ends and ash (N.B. its supposed to be a no smoking cottage) - WE cleaned it up, but it kind of ruined the moment, and then of course we started wondering if it had be cleaned at all, and tbh it was off-putting... sorry, but I wouldn't want this to happen to someone else.

  • "Lovely cottage with a beautiful view."

Had everything you could ask for a self catering holiday. Welcome hamper pack was a very lovely touch. We arranged a Tesco delivery to the cottage which was perfect as the “shop” (at caravan park) in the village is limited and nearest large supermarket is in Dumfries. Nice walks along the beach although it is a bit rocky, hence the lighthouse. Lazy spa hot tub was really nice but apart from the leaflet that came with the chemicals there are no actual instructions on how to use or maintain it. Lovely log burner in living room which was all set up ready to light, with ample logs stacked for use. Comfortable beds… although the double bed is a metal frame and very squeaky. Please also note that the bunk bed/single bedroom is actually attached to the double bedroom and can only be accessed through this. The wall separating these two bedrooms is mostly comprised of a glass window and half glass door, so not much privacy for adults being in both rooms. Someone else has mentioned the pillows and we would agree that these are very thin and soft and could do with being replaced. Overall a lovely stay and we would definitely return. Word of warning about the rear parking space… the new neighbour in the cottage behind is not happy about the holiday cottage “marking” this space as theirs. Apparently it is common ground and free for all to use. He parks his van outside his cottage but quite far down, effectively blocking the area marked as the Solway Cottage “parking space”. Parking at front is no problem but limited space.

  • "Had a lovely stay at Solway Cottage which is in a perfect location right by the sea, even in the recent very blustery weather."

The cottage was tastefully decorated with plenty space to relax, particularly the comfy sofas & log burner. Perfect spot for chilling out. We made use of dining room for my husbands birthday dinner, and the candles provided added a lovely touch on a wild night. It is definitely a property I would recommend to friends. Just a couple of things worth mentioning that can easily be rectified: Pillows very soft (we used 2 each plus a cushion) and I would have expected the bed linen to be better quality given the standard of the rest of the property. Overall cottage was spotless, however the lounge table tops were sticky and when we moved sofa forward it obviously hadn't been moved for a while. There was a vacuum so took a few minutes to tidy up which wasn't a problem. Shop had been closed for season (I assume) since October - this should have been reflected on listing- luckily we took supplies with us.

  • "Whilst the accommodation was lovely and well presented, we found that the cleanliness was below standard."

The bathroom had not been cleaned properly, the oven shelves were dirty, the washing machine rubber door rim was dirty, and one of the sofas was covered in sand and (we assume) dog hairs. Comparing it to the cottage we stayed at in South Wales last year, we can safely say that there is no comparison with regards to cleanliness. On another note, we texted the owner early in the week to report that two lightbulbs in the lounge ceiling lights had gone, and that there were no suitable replacements in the drawer. However, this text went unanswered for the entire week. Whilst the cottage is beautifully positioned and well equipped, we were extremely disappointed with the above issues.

First time we stayed at the property was 2019 and was new rental and I stayed was concerned of the increase of prices not being to much. We were booked to come in June 2020 but due to Covid we moved it to June 2021 & price has increased £100 but realise everything increases over a year . Went to look at booking same time next year and the price has increased a further £500 which seems a very steep increase in 1 year :(

On our arrival there was a basket of goodies in the kitchen which was a lovely touch. The rooms are big so plenty room to move about. The front garden is a sun trap and we particularly enjoyed sitting on the bench watching the sea, there is also a table and chairs out in the front garden. The back garden is smaller with a seating area and an undercover lazy spa. Everything you would need has been catered for, even a Solway Cottage Netflix account. The view over the beach and out to sea is so relaxing. There are two sun rooms at the front of the property one with a dining table and chairs and the other has rattan style furniture so even if it rains you can still see the view. We have already booked to stay again next year and can’t wait to return.

The cottage itself had everything we needed, it was clean and very comfortable. The spa out the back was fantastic and it had the added bonus of being under cover so we still went out in it in the rain :) This really is a fabulous location and easy enough to drive to other places - Dumfries is about 25 mins drive. Southerness is a small coastal village established in the late 18th century, which looks out over the Solway Firth, and forms part of the Colvend coast, one of the finest stretches of coastline on the 'Scottish Riviera'. Home to three pubs, two village stores, a leisure centre with a pool at Parkdean and two miles of sandy beaches with sand dunes, rock pools and Gulf Stream warmed waters, and one of the oldest lighthouses in Scotland, built in 1748, it has everything you will need for a relaxing holiday. The nearby Criffel Hill rises to 569m, offers wonderful views of the farmland and the sands of the Nith Estuary below, and provides great walking opportunities. The Southerness Championship Golf Course adjoins the village and offers panoramic views of the Solway Firth, the Cumbrian Lake District to the south and the Galloway Hills to the west.
