The property

Penrith 7.7 miles.

A pretty, stone-built cottage annexe, Herdwick Cottage is a charming studio apartment offering two guests a homely base in the wonderful Lake District.

Attached to the owner's home and sharing their beautiful garden, Herdwick Cottage is located in the hamlet of Thackthwaite, near to Penrith, and is within close reach of Ullswater, perfect for those wishing to enjoy water sports on the lake.

Be charmed by the quaint exterior, with roses growing up and around the stone walls, before stepping into the studio apartment.

A neat kitchen area holds an electric oven and hob with extractor fan, as well as a fridge and a microwave, amongst plenty of cupboard space for two.

A folding dining table and chairs offers a clever use of space and somewhere to enjoy some home-cooked meals when you're not dining out in the local country pubs.

Two armchairs rest in the corner alongside the two single beds, presenting a great set up for friends holidaying together.

Completing the layout is the bathroom with a walk-in shower, basin and WC and a heated rail to keep your towel toasty.

Enjoy summer evenings with your travelling companion around the fire pit in the luscious garden, with sunny mornings spent waking up with the wildlife whilst sipping your morning coffee.

Walkers can embark on the exploration of Ullswater via the Ullswater Way, a 20-mile walking route following the shores of the lake, complete the whole walk in one go or split it into parts over the course of your stay, ideal for all ages thanks to the fairly low-level and easy to walk route.

The Ullswater Steamers are a fantastic way to enjoy the scenery, cruise along stopping at Glenridding, Aira Force, How Town and Pooley Bridge.

Leaving from Glenridding village are the kayak tours with Tall Bloke Adventures, choose a half or full day of paddling the waters and visiting the beaches and islands of the lake.

The incredible waterfalls of Aira Force are not to be missed, made up of around 70 foot of multiple waterfalls, it's a beautiful sight with plenty of viewing bridges above and below the falls.

Helvellyn, Blencathra and Skiddaw are just a handful of peaks within easy reach of Herdwick Cottage, take on the challenge and be witness to some incredible views and landscapes of this treasured national park.

For a homely base for your adventurous Lakes trip, stay at Herdwick Cottage.

About the location

Keswick 17 miles; Carlisle 20 miles.

The bustling market town of Penrith, once the capital of Cumbria, enjoys a central position between the Lake District and North Pennines and is ideally placed for taking in all that the region has to offer. Renowned for its wealth of specialist shops, the sandstone buildings of Penrith hide intriguing yards, lanes and alleyways, with a myriad of attractive cottages, gardens and little shops. With a wide choice of excellent pubs, hotels, restaurants and entertainment, Penrith also offers a museum, and Millennium Trails round the historic city streets. Within easy reach of the town is Rheged – an innovative visitor centre with shops, restaurants, exhibitions and a giant cinema screen showing educational and informative films. Brougham Castle (The Windsor of the North), Long Meg and her daughters (the 3rd largest stone circle in England) and the historic city of Carlisle are all a short drive away, as is the stunning scenery of both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.
