Piggery Cottage is an excellent cosy little cottage on a working farm. Ideally located for exploring the North Lakes and coast. Having stayed at a number of properties in the locality, the host; Lorna, goes the extra distance to make sure your stay is extra special. From a welcome hamper of goodies and essentials, setting the cottage up with a Christmas tree, decorations and lights to make it feel like home from home, to showing us round the farm at milking time, where Craig was a fountain of knowledge explaining everything from the milking process to how the farm operates, nothing was too much trouble. For dog lovers, be prepared for the very friendly resident dogs Rupert and Max to visit for a daily treat and fuss. Simply, the best place we’ve stayed at.

Anyone who has rented self catering accommodation will be familiar with having to go out and buy basic food essentials like bread, milk, coffee, tea etc. Also things like washing up liquid, soap, paper towels etc. Well that is not the case at Piggery Cottage as Mrs. Wilson makes sure that all the basics are provided and plenty of treats (cakes, crisps wine etc.) as well. So many self catering Cottages are equipped with granny’s tired ‘hand me down’ furniture and left over odds and ends of kitchen utensils and crockery. This is not the case with Piggery Cottage. There are ample supplies just about anything you might need; all in good order. What’s more, we found that if we needed anything that wasn’t already provided then one word with Lorna Wilson and it magically appeared.

  • "Set is in a rural location but only a 5 minute drive from Wigton where 3 supermarkets and other local shops will ensure you will have all the supplies you need."

Plenty of eating places in the town and nearby. The cottage more than lives up to the photographs in the listing. It has all the facilities you could wish for, a home from home. Mrs. Wilson (owner) is a very welcoming host, fresh flowers in the cottage and a welcome pack was greatly appreciated and enjoyed. Although there was a comprehensive information folder outlining the operation of appliances etc she spent the time to show us where everything was and how they worked. There were no problems during our stay but I am confident, had there been, it would have been quickly sorted. A plus for us was the ability to take our dog with us. We used this as a base to explore the hills and trails around Keswick. There is a book in the cottage listing walks suitable for dogs which we used. I found the walks Aira Force and Friar's Crag very rewarding for us all. Friar's Crag was the longer of the two walks and there was the bonus of stopping at the Mary Mount Hotel (dog friendly) for a coffee about the halfway point. Aira Force is equally dog friendly having both a kiosk and a café. One day the weather was clagged in and our walk in the Ullswater area would have been a waste of time so we walked up "Binsey", a hill which is not to far away from the cottage. On a good day I'm told you have great views of the surrounding area, the Solway coast, Keswick and Derwent water, perhaps next time. Returned to cottage, dried off, and spent an enjoyable afternoon exploring Cockermouth and Maryport. All in all a great few days away and I would have no hesitation staying in the cottage again

Lorna and her family are so friendly and go the extra mile to make you feel at home, including their pets. Rupert the dog is just lovely and very friendly. The welcome pack was more than we expected and the cakes were just scrummy. Would definitely look at going there again. This is the first time we have booked with Sykes and if this is the quality of your cottages then we will be looking at booking with you again.

The accomodation was spotlessly clean and the welcome pack was comprenhensive and much appreciated after our 4 hour drive. Being shown around the working farm by the owners was an unexpected treat that we found fascinating and enjoyable. The only slight issue we experienced was the wifi wasnt working but in fairness there wasnt anything the owners could do as they were awaiting BT to fix a fault their end. All in all we had a great week away and the weather was great.

  • "What can I really say about this cottage that hasn’t already been said."

We loved our stay here from the moment we walked into the cottage. It was Devine so quaint well maintained a home from home. Lorna and Jim have provided everything you need there. The welcome package was amazing filled with wonderful goodies. And cakes made for us to have a nice cuppa with after a long journey from Cornwall, a lovely touch. Carlisle was my home town so I knew how far we were away from the nearest town, pub, shop etc. The farm is a working farm so there is livestock around inc free range hens. Three friendly sheep in the field opposite the cottage also, so please respect the fact that if you take your dog with u that they remain on the lead when on the farm. Lorna has a wonderful retriever dog called Rupert that my collie Daisy fell madly in love with

  • "Being naturally sceptical about feedback sites, I read the comments about this cottage but decided to make my own mind up and not get too excited about all the positive feedback."

However, from the moment we arrived everything was simply perfect. The personal welcome from Lorna on arrival was genuine and warm but was just the precursor to what lay ahead. The accommodation was spotless, well equipped, homely and just right for the four of us. But what really made the difference was the welcome pack of snacks, home-made cakes, wine, fruit, sweets and dog treats, along with all the other necessary provisions we would normally gave had to go shopping for - Lorna and Jim had thought of everything. During our stay, surrounded by the farm animals, Lorna was always there if we needed anything and always happy to have a little chat - we even met Timmy her pet sheep and the dogs. Thank you Lorna for a warm welcome and lovely stay. Hopefully we will see you again.

Wigton is a popular centre for shopping, pubs and restaurants, and also boasts a theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis and other sports. Lord Melvyn Bragg was a native of Wigton, and used the town (called Thurston in some of his writings) and the surrounding area as the setting for his novels including ‘A Time to Dance’. Located 18 miles from Penrith it is a good base for the attractions of the North Lakes, the cathedral city of Carlisle, 12 miles away, Keswick, just north Derwentwater and close to Lake Bassenthwaite, and the natural beauty of the West Cumbrian Coast. Hadrian’s Wall is within 25 miles, while the Scottish Borders, and Gretna Green, are within easy reach.
