  • "A truly delightful cottage in an idyllic location!"

It contained everything required for a very comfortable warm stay, spotlessly clean and comfortable. Thank you to the hosts for making the stay a home away from home. Would highly recommend.

  • "Great pre-stay communication from the owner with clear details."

The cottage was spotless and very cosy. Better than adequate furniture and very well equipped kitchen. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend or indeed stay again. Thanks for a great break!

  • "Had a lovely time in a beautiful and convenient location."

Our only criticism was we all found the mattresses very hard, suggest thicker mattress toppers. Otherwise it was a beautifully presented property and we all enjoyed our time there.

  • "Caroline, myself and Ted the dog really enjoyed our stay."

Mark was the perfect host, providing an immediate response whenever we contacted him. The property was lovely and spotlessly clean. The location was really peaceful with some fantastic walks from the doorstep. It was ideal for commuting to other parts of The Lakes for days out and further walks too. We would definitely recommend Abbots Reading cottage and we will be returning for another holiday there in the future.

Communication with the owner was excellent and pre arrival information was helpful. The kitchen was very large and the lounge area provided a great space for relaxing after long walks.

  • "Beautiful location, in the country and not far from the main towns."

Cottage is very clean and has a wonderful little wood next door for doggy walks. The accommodation is set around a courtyard shared with other holiday rentals so it doesn’t have its own enclosed garden. The building is finished to a high standard with a beautiful fitted kitchen and new furniture throughout but despite this, the appliances are fairly basic and there is no dishwasher. We suggest replacing the iron, pans, baking trays, and wok as they have all seen better days. It was great having two very nice en-suite shower rooms but beds were a big disappointment. Hard mattresses, rock solid pillows and duvets which are barely wide enough for two people. I see from other reviews that this issue has been raised before so it definitely needs attention. A good quality mattress topper, fluffier pillows and a better duvet would make the sleeping arrangements much more comfortable. And it would be great to have a Smart TV in the lounge instead of just Freeview. Other little touches which would make a big difference include a welcome tray with some complimentary items like tea/coffee/toiletries, etc, some milk in the fridge and the house being warm on arrival. With these improvements it really would be a luxury cottage. The location is very convenient for exploring the South Lake District and all in all we had a great holiday.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback following your recent stay at Abbots Reading Cottage. We are glad to hear you had a great stay and loved the peaceful location. We appreciate your detailed comments and take these all on board as we are continuously trying to reach and surpass guests' expectations. Back when the properties were set up a discussion was made on whether to add a dishwasher but due to space and costs, we decided against this. We will inspect the utensils and equipment however we recently had a Visit England inspection to which all was graded 4* but understand wear and tear does occur in a highly used accommodation. Again the bedding and mattresses were all rated high but we will ensure to check on this. Regarding adding Smart TV's we will be sure to consider this as we do understand that this is more sought after now. Thank you again for your comments and we hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner

  • "Really loved our stay at the cottage, the only very minor things that it could do with are larger duvets that overhang the bed more, softer bed pillows, and a dishwasher."

These however are not complaints, mere suggestions. I really cannot grumble with the cottage. It was beautiful, immaculate, the owner (Mark) was brilliant, location was perfect. We will definitely be back.

All the cottages were immaculate. We all ate together every night (10 of us and 4 dogs in total) in the Cottage which has plenty of room! The dogs loved the forest walk too and the pen! Great for dogs, so pet friendly. Super walks from the door. We had a family bbq in the shared outdoor area. Fabulous! Would highly recommend!

The upside down rooms of our cottage were very comfortable and we loved the large , well stocked kitchen which had views across to a working neighbouring farm with a very friendly lady called Molly there who welcomed us over when we called to purchase some eggs. We were warm, comfortable and had everything we needed. Even our old dog was well catered for as the property has its own little wood in which we could walk. About the location

LAKESIDE

Newby Bridge 1.2 miles; Bowness-on-Windermere 8.7 miles.

Set on the southern shores of Lake Windermere, the small, sleepy hamlet of Lakeside offers a peaceful getaway location, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District’s popular attractions, but still within easy reach of them. Whether you decide to discover the area in the car, by foot, bike, boat or steam, there’s plenty to see nearby to keep the whole family content. The ferry dock offers the chance to travel by boat to Waterhead or Bowness, or take a shorter trip to the National Trust’s Fell Foot Park, across the water, which offers pretty grounds set alongside the very tip of the lake, providing plenty of places for picnics, paddling, games and gentle strolls on sunny afternoons. Situated alongside the Lakeside Station is the long-standing Lakeside and Haverwaithe Railway, home to Britain’s oldest standard gauge steam engine, on which you can travel back in time along this well-loved Heritage line, and where little ones will delight in meeting Thomas and his friends. Visit the Lakes Aquarium to uncover the often-secretive world of life below water, where you’ll chance upon hundreds of captivating creatures that feature in the surrounding rivers, lakes and sea. There are wonderful, well-signed walks to be enjoyed in the immediate area, including the 5-mile route to Finsthwaite’s High Dam, which trails from Lakeside through pleasant woodlands and meadows. Lakeside offers an exclusive holiday location with all of the Lake District’s delights at your fingertips.
