  • "We stayed here a long time ago and loved the house and location then, and it was even better this time as it’s been “done up”."

The decor and furnishings are beautiful and it was very much home from home. The only minor issues were the fact no oven gloves were provided-never experienced that before in a rental home and surely it’s a safety issue not to provide them? Also we couldn’t get the light to switch off in the upstairs bathroom.

Thank you for choosing to stay again at Underheron and for taking the time to give feedback following your stay. Firsty we are delighted that you decided to return and that you had an enjoyable holiday, please accept our sincere apologies that their was no oven glove left for your stay out caretaker usually leave one during every changeover we can only think that she has overlooked leaving one for your stay she would however have been more than happy to deliver one to you had you made contact the bathroom light has been checked and is in working order the mirror in that room is touch sensitive rather than having a switch and we wonder if this may be what you have made reference to nevertheless we hope this did not detract from your enjoyment of Underheron and the Lake District. Everything was perfect other than the dishwasher breaking (didn’t really want to spend my holiday washing up) but these things happen! Someone did contact and come to look very quickly. We would definitely recommend and we will be back!

  • "Hello Lovely stay again thank you."

The owners do really need to buy some new frying pans - the ones there have lost their coatings and have got a lot worse since we last stayed. They only cost like £ 20 or 30 … The front door lock remains an issue .. I have sharpened all the knives as they were dangerously blunt. Otherwise we had a lovely stay. This is is hopefully constructive and not negative. With Best Wishes Chris

Thank you for your response, the owners have now replaced the pans. Property Owner

Beautiful cottage in a lovely location. Tastefully furnished in a modern style with traditional touches. Well stocked kitchen. One or two things showing a little wear which is probably expected and sadly probably down to people not taking care. Drawer fronts in freezer broken and difficult to get drawers in and out. Already booked for next year. Thank you for the treat at Rattle Ghyll and the Prosecco - nice touches.

The property was very comfortable and had everything we were looking for. We enjoyed watching and feeding the huge variety of birds and were lucky enough to see a deer and red squirrel in the garden. The weather was superb and we all agreed that a week was just not long enough. A fantastic holiday enjoyed by all. Thank you.

Last time we visited we did notice it was in need of some refurbishment so the new furniture, lamps etc were really appreciated! We do cook and eat in some of the time and there were plenty of pans, dishes etc. Beds were very comfortable and bathrooms spacious. The wildlife around the house is a delight-many types of birds, greys and red squirrel seen. Sadly no badgers this time but we had several visits from a small deer. Wonderful to see so close up. Thanks to the host for milk and Prosecco. I’m sure we’ll be back again!

It’s a great house and our family have spent many great times and made great memories here. The new refurbishments are fabulous and make the house even better than before (only small fault would be the en suite shower, it’s always been a bit poor and not very powerful, all other showers are great though) We have always enjoyed the visit from badgers in the evening and we were not disappointed this time around, a bit of whatever leftovers we had, placed on the two rocks outside front door, always guaranteed a visit, leaving a light on gave us a great view too. All in all, this is a great property and as a family, we can highly recommend it!

A big house which comfortably fit 5 adults and 3 children. Beautiful warm house, loved the underfloor heating in kitchen and bathrooms, as well as the fire. The kitchen was wonderful with lots of cooking equipment, utensils etc. Did a roast one night. The christmas tree and decorations were a hit and the house felt festive. Loads of board games to play if wet. Close to everything, had some great meals out. Definitely want a return visit to this property. If you want big, warm, extremely clean, well positioned, then you will love this property. A big thumbs up from us

  • "Our second stay at Underheron and everything was fine."

Location is spot on for my and my family needs. If the property had a bath to sooth our aching legs after our walks, place would be even better but I understand the propety footprint does not really allow for one. Great holiday, lovely house, lovely location.

  • "This is the fourth time we’ve stayed at Underheron and although I appreciate that a property does occasionally require updating, for me, it has lost its homely feel and charm."

On the maintenance side, the downstairs shower is leaking from the controls. The heating wasn’t very efficient. We couldn’t work out whether the thermostat on the wall in the hall controlled the boiler or underfloor heating. There are also two other thermostats, but again, not sure of their purpose. The radiator in the downstairs twin bedroom couldn’t be regulated and so my elderly father was quite cold in this room. The so called welcome pack and instruction manual for the appliances was hidden away in a random drawer when it should be out on display. Luckily we are fairly familiar with Grasmere and the property but for someone new visiting, there was little information to explain anything about the property or area. To say the property has had a recent refurbishment, it was disappointing to see evidence of water leakage in both upstairs bedrooms with paint and plaster flaking off. I would assume that a property of this calibre and price increase requires a certain level of interior decoration. I would be disappointed if we had paid the higher cost of £4000 per week at a property with these issues.

Sadly not everyone will like the refurbishments made to Underheron in 2018 which included new fitted kitchen, dining room and lounge areas, plus new upstairs bathroom. Generally these have been met with very positive reviews. We can confirm the Heating is working perfectly well and the Thermostats have been marked to the area they control. There had been a leak after very heavy rain from a new Velux window this has now been addressed and the stained wall is being repainted mid December. In addition to suggested local attractions in the Property guide there are several restaurant suggestions on the the notice board in the entrance hall. Property Owner

There was a host of wildlife to watch throughout our stay including some hungry badgers. We experienced some heavy rain which subsequently led to some small leaks but the Lakelovers response was swift and helpful. We would definitely return :o).

  • "The listing says ground floor bathroom with separate shower, basin and toilet."

However, there is no bath so this is inaccurate. The lakes is a walking destination where you look forward to a soak after a walk so we were very surprised that a property of this size didn't have a bath. Also, the TV reception was very poor and it needs either re-tuning or the aerial looking at. The downstairs bathroom has a broken/missing light fitting and there are knobs missing from the wardrobe doors in the master kingsize bedroom downstairs. There is a slow leak on the kitchen tap so we put a bowl to catch the drip in the sink cupboard. Bearing this in mind I'm not sure it warrants the price paid. . .

Thank you for your feedback; we have now amended the listing with regards to the shower room. We encourage our guests to report any maintenance issues during their holiday so these can be quickly rectified. However the issues you raise in your feedback have now been addressed. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage and we all enjoyed it - bet its lovely in the summer when you can use the patios etc!"

One small point, if an owner doesn't want to provide logs/fire lighters for the first night, it would be helpful to include this in the information pack. We would have arrived with some had we known. The cottage was lovely and warm, but its the ambiance the log burner creates that is important.

The kitchen was well equipped and it was very well situated. Its just a shame that its priced itself way out of line for next year. We won't be re-booking at that price and we've been going to the Lakes for many years now.

However, in my opinion, it does lack a utility room and the entrance hall is tiny. There is no where for various coats, boots, rucksacks and wet dogs. Other than that, it’s a lovely property.

  • "The details for the property said that Sky TV was available."

This was one of the reasons for going there because I'm less active now and wanted to watch the Test Matches. I called at the office in Windermere on Monday 7th June where the assistant agreed that it was supposed to be there and he said somebody would call that afternoon. Nobody did come until Thursday after my wife had called in to complain. The engineer said there was no Sky box or connection. Then I found that "Sky" had been deleted from the details, probably at the instigation of the owner. It had obviously been overlooked since the refurbishment. (I see the charges for next year are about double this year's.) Another disappointment was the gloomy surroundings: no views because of the tall trees which keep out the sun most of the time, even at this time of year. And the back "garden" was too steep for us to want to use it (no hand rail on the steps). We did see one red squirrel, though.

  • "Lovely, comfortable, cottage - it isn't really somewhere I would go with more than 4-6 people despite it sleeping 8 though."

In the current climate I would have liked more cleaning products available but there was hand sanitiser. A fabulous welcome hamper, unsure if this was as our stay was at Christmas but it was a lovely touch. Of all the many cottages at Grasmere, this was fantastically situated. We have said we would return but it is very pricey - likely because it sleeps 8.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your recent stay at Underheron. We are delighted to hear you had a lovely stay. The property has 4 spacious bedrooms, 3 bathrooms a large open plan living room/dining room and separate Kitchen with further seating. We apologise that you found the space cosy the owner has tried to maximise the space they have, and we think it works very well and Visit England score the property highly on their space as well. We hope we can still welcome you back in the future and thanks again for your feedback. Many thanks – The Owner & The Lakelovers Team Property Owner

  • "Everything was in order but a few issues let it down slightly."

Having stayed in many other properties in the Lakes this was the only cottage that we didn't give 100% feedback NEGATIVES Not enough toilet for the rooms (only 1 per room and no spare) Light bulbs with flies in and cobwebs A bowl found in the cupboard covered in dried food (Horrendous, given the Covid Pandemic) Everything should have been checked and cleaned thoroughly Egg stain (appeared to look like) on the bottom of one of the sheets POSITIVES Excellent location Comfortable Excellent layout Clean (Except for the above) Apart from the few negatives, everything was excellent. Also, although they mentioned 'Credit' in a Dehli in Ambleside, it would have been a nice touch to have milk and bread at least, left in the cottage.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your recent stay at Underheron. We are glad to hear you had a lovely week minus some minor issues and found the property to be excellent for you and your family/friends. We appreciate all feedback, and it assists in improvements we can make. Regarding toilet rolls, all Lakelovers properties only usually provide 1 per toilet to start off your stay however it has been passed onto Housekeeping. We apologise for the cleaning issues and these have again been flagged with the team as we always expect high standards of Housekeeping to be provided at all times especially during the COVID pandemic. Lastly regarding a welcome hamper it has been very difficult to source a local company to ensure something is provided before each stay for each guest. We used to use the company which turned into the Deli in Ambleside but unfortunately, they cannot deliver anymore. We hope the voucher did come in use at some point in your stay and again we thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback. Many thanks, The Owner and The Lakelovers team Property Owner

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance.
