We also had tea and scones waiting for us in the lounge which was a lovely touch. The accommodation has everything you need and more - a true home away from home - 5 stars :)

  • "A beautiful cosy cottage."

Wonderfully peacefull with panoramic views. Excellent facilities . Feelings of total escapism. Excellent local facilities a few minutes drive away but far enough away not to encroach on peacefull setting. Comfortable bed and furniture throughout. Nice deep bath with shower. Could not be better.

  • "We spent a 3 week extended break at Dove Cottage and wished it had been longer!"

It is a really lovely, fantastically well equipped cottage set in beautiful countryside on the outskirts of Allendale Town. Nothing was too much trouble for hosts Barry and Elaine from the moment we arrived until our reluctant departure. Very highly recommended.

  • "The cottage was clean and well appointed."

The owners were very welcoming and approachable without being intrusive. The views from the cottage were stunning and the window seat is the perfect place to sit, relax and enjoy the view. It’s position lends itself to exploring the beautiful surrounding area with ease. We would be happy to return.

  • "It was a nice cottage and the location was good for visiting the attractions nearby and good for walking."

The host Barry was very pleasant and helpful, however unfortunately the heating system broke and we were freezing cold for 3 days. Not the owners fault and He did try by giving us a Portable heater until they got it fixed on our last day. The bathroom smelt a bit “un fresh” after being used, seemed the toilet was only plumbed with a plastic pipe which did not vent correctly. We ended up buying some spray to help with sewer gas smell. The shower is very basic and is not a full shower due to ceiling height, but that was already in the listing. Nice cottage layout and everything that you need is there.

  • "A lovely little cottage in a stunning part of the world."

Barry and Elaine were most welcoming and helpful, superb hosts. I would not hesitate to book this accommodation again in the future next time we visit this area.

  • "The cottage is in a lovely location, remote with awesome views but close to the amenities of Allendale Town."

The cottage is well appointed with and very comfortable with tasteful furnishing and decoration. It was very well equipped for self catering and there was a lovely wood burner for when it got colder in the evenings. The heating was very good and the place was clean. The owners were friendly and helpful and answered any queries we had whilst otherwise giving us our space and privacy. There was a lot of information provided about the cottage and local area in well presented folders. I applaud their environmental commitment which has allowed them to earn awards for green tourism. Bath and shower facilities were adequate but could be improved.

Lovely hosts, clean and comfortable cottage with everything you need, even egg cups !! So we bought free range eggs down the road and had them for breakfast. We had the best time ever.

  • "Dove Cottage is an excellent base to explore Allendale, which is a beautiful area."

It's comfortable and well laid out with everything you need and lovely walking straight from the door. If you're tall, allow for the low ceilings downstairs, which are mentioned in the listing, and which mean ducking into one side of the bed and taking a sit down shower - and watch your head on the way in! Having said that, the bed is very comfortable, the shower is warm and lovely and there's plenty of space overall. Upstairs there are very good facilities, a well-stocked kitchen, loads of room, comfy chairs and great views. We really liked the effort the owners put into environmentally friendly measures, with wind and solar power, ground-sourced heat, composting and recycling and relevant tips and advice. They also go out of their way to make you feel welcome and well-informed - there is a plate of scones and jam on arrival, and Barry and Elaine are keen to pass on their knowledge of the area and make themselves available to help, without ever being intrusive. They even gave us and the dog a lift back from town one day! The walk to Allendate town is easily doable for anyone who is reasonably fit - it's about 25 minutes, about 2/3 of it with a pavement. The walk back takes a little more effort but is well worth it for the friendly atmosphere in the town's pubs and shops. We strongly recommend Dove Cottage as a place to stay, relax, walk and explore.

  • "I know the water comes from a spring but the pressure is very low, I couldn't have a bath as the water which wasn't very warm, would have been cold by the time there was enough to cover my legs."

Otherwise a lovely cottage, very clean and well equipped. My dogs, who were made very welcome, loved being able to run, after rabbits, in the fields.

  • "Quite simply, this is the best holiday cottage we have stayed in so far on our adventures."

The location was absolutely superb, offering stunning views and the chance to feel completely 'away from it all.' The cottage itself was cosy, comfortable and very well-equipped. Although Elaine was not home when we stayed, Barry was the perfect host making us, and our dog, feel welcome from the moment we arrived and throughout our stay. We cannot recommend the cottage and hosts enough!

  • "The owners were friendly and welcoming."

The cottage couldnt be faulted for furnishings and fittings. Personally I found the close proximity to the owners home off putting. The bedroom was on the ground floor and its floor to ceiling window overllooked their patio and conservatory so necessitated curtains being closed when bedroom in use. Whilst situated amongst splendid view of the open country side these could not be enjoyed whilst seated in the upper toom. The frontage, particulalry of the neighbouring cottage could do with some TLC - long grass and unkempt weeds. A very remote location. Ideal for walkers/cyclists.

  • "Lovely quiet location for a relaxing holiday."

Had a great time. Stunning views but you will need a car or bike to get around: or not mind the uphill walk to the cottage. Barry and Elaine were perfect hosts : friendly but never obtrusive. Highly recommended.

  • "Lovely peaceful cottage with spectacular views."

Our hosts were most welcoming and the tray of scones and rock buns was a nice surprise after a long journey. Dove cottage is spotlessly clean and furnished and decorated to a high standard with everthing you need. There are so many information guides in the cottage about local flora and fauna, walking/cylcling routes, places to eat and things to see, one week at Dove Cottage is certainly not enough. We especially liked the fact that Dove Cottage has gained the Green Tourism gold award for its environmentally friendly features amd initiatives. We'll definitely be returning to Dove Cottage.

Allendale is ideally placed for access to Carlisle and Lake District to the west, Hexham, Newcastle and Durham to the east and the Hadrian's Wall just to the north, as well as the Scottish Borders. There are lots of walks, cycling opportunities and unspoilt villages in the surrounding North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding countryside or travelling further north to the glorious Heritage Coastline.
