  • "This cottage is absolutely beautiful, the wasn't anything I needed in the kitchen and did big roast dinner with all the trimmings, the bathrooms are great, the waterfall shower maybe needs descaling as quite a few holes blocked but wasn't a problem, huge white fluffy towels lovely, beds comfy, could go on and on, gorgeous gardens although my little dog found it fun and very easy to get under the gates!"

Maybe bit of mesh needed at bottom, also some sort of barrier for stairs?, had to use crate and dog basket to keep him downstairs. Everything apart from that like home from home.thankyou.

The beds are comfy and the village is quiet at night. Nice little cottage garden to enjoy. We had a few issues with maintenance whilst we were there but they did try to fix things withing a day or so of us arriving. It's looking a bit tired in places and could do with a freshen up given the price to stay. Overall a nice cottage and worth staying at.

Didn’t give full marks because the kitchen wasn’t especially well stocked with utensils, and pans are in need of replacing (non-stick coat is peeling off). We had to clean quite a lot of kitchen things on arrival before we could use them.

  • "First impressions are the cottage is done to a high standard but in need of some TLC."

I always judge a place by how good a sleep you get and unfortunately the beds were so uncomfortable. Maybe a mattress upgrade would fix this. There was also a funny smell in the back bedroom. The garden is nice and big and might be dog friendly for larger dogs that cannot get through the large gaps in the gates but not for smaller dogs. Although not a fault of the property owners but our stay was not a relaxing one due to work being done on the property adjacent with a great big wagon being parked in front of the living room windows for most of the time and work starting as early as 4am. Hammering and sawing woke me up several times. Was looking forward to getting home just for a good nights sleep. We won’t be returning back here.

The downside for us was a noisy party who stayed at the Dale Manor House. These two properties are part of a terraced block. They all have separate gardens and a larger communal garden for all properties to share which runs along the bottom of these separate gardens. The large party were very noisy (adults and children). They moved benches so they were directly at the bottom of our garden on the other side of a low wall. They had a dog off lead when all signs clearly stated to be on a lead. We were unable to enjoy our garden due to the noise and the lack of privacy and unable to let the dogs out as they would if jumped to wall to play with the off lead dog in the communal garden area. We payed a lot of money for our relaxing week away and lost at least two days due to the above.

However we were disappointed to find the coffee shops were not dog friendly and food was only available at one of the pubs on 2 nights a week but again the dining room was not dog friendly. The cottage was warm and comfortable and there were lots of walking routes close by. If there was anything we would like to improve it would be some drawer space in the ensuite bedrooms. There was very little storage space to put clothes in the bedrooms, no drawers, just limited hanging rails.

The cleaners had done a fantastic job - the place was immaculate and we were allowed to put things in the fridge and leave suitcases whilst we went on my husband's Memorial Walk before the correct 'checking in' time. We found the cottage fabulous for entertaining as Allendale used to be hour home town and of course folks kept dropping by - all very impressed by the quality of the furnishings, décor and were the best equipped self-catering places we have every stayed in (and I used to own a 5 star time share) so I am used to quality but these cottages are 'top notch' and I cannot recommend them too much - we dearly would love to rent them again in the future if it is possible. About the location

ALLENDALE

Hexham 11 miles; Allenheads 8 miles; Newcastle 34 miles.

The town of Allendale was once the centre of a busy lead mining area, and many relics of the mining era remain around the area. Allendale is ideally placed for access to Carlisle and Lake District to the west, Hexham, Newcastle and Durham to the east and the Hadrian's Wall just to the north, as well as the Scottish Borders. There are lots of walks, cycling opportunities and unspoilt villages in the surrounding North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding countryside or travelling further north to the glorious Heritage Coastline. Allendale is home to the New Year tradition of Tar Bar'ls well worthing seeing or visit in the autumn to visit the Allen Valleys Folk Festival. Furthermore Allendale is a popular stay for cyclists carrying out the Coast to Coast.
