  • "Our second stay at The Stables was a lovely as the first a year previously."

A really comfortable and well-sized property that's perfect for a couple (and a dog). Lovely welcome pack and the Christmas decorations made it very cosy. Thanks again for a lovely stay.

Thank you for your 5* feedback, we really appreciated you returning and that you enjoyed your christmas week in our home. Property Owner

Very clean and comfortable. A little tricky to find but we got there ok. Shame the weather wasn’t better for us but nothing anyone can do about that. Beautiful location.

  • "Neither property or Alston suitable for us I'm afraid, we decided to cut our holiday short and come home after 4 days."

We're seniors (50s/60s) with the aches, pains and mobility issues which comes with older age so the sofas were out of bounds as you are practically sitting on the floor, we ended up moving the little table into the middle of the room and sitting on dining chairs. The kitchen pictures show shelving on the walls but they aren't there anymore, crockery and glassware tucked away in a bottom cupboard hard to bend down to. The shower isn't powerful and the outside space is not inviting, a tiny concrete square between buildings at the back which means a 360 view of brick walls. Similarly, the view from the living room is also of a large brick wall and the upstairs tenants car which is parked a foot away from the living room window when he's in. Alston has several independent shops, a post office, a Co-op and a handful of pubs/eateries. Recommend Alston House, food & drink was great. Don't recommend the 'take-away' pizza was awful. Drove to Penrith one afternoon, travel time 30-40 minutes over the hills with wonderful views. We wanted to be much closer to the Lakes/larger town/decent views but the blame for not getting that in Alston is all ours as we didn't carry out the appropriate amount of research needed to source it. Cathy & Kevin, June 2023

Thank you for feedback, we are sorry to hear your trip wasn't as you had hoped. We feel the property details and photos do portray the cottage correctly, stating an enclosed yard, so sorry to hear we were not what you were looking for. As for the kitchen shelves, they were taken down due to maintenance work and sadly were unable to be refitted at the current time. Alston is a lovely small, quiet market town, and the perfect base if you are willing to travel to both Cumbria and the Lakes. Regards. Property Owner

The only remark I would make is that the cottage is quite difficult to locate when you first arrive so maybe give your customers a little more further instructions before arrival.

Hi Thank you for your very positive feedback, we have updated the arrival information and we hope this helps future guests when travelling over. Thank you for staying and the important feedback. Property Owner

  • "Parking space is great , albeit a car parked outside Kings cottage opposite meant having to reverse out very carefully."

With a car parked there its almost impossible to reverse in

Thank you for your outstanding rating. We understand fully it can be difficult parking, the streets are very old and narrow, dating back to the 1700's. We are lucky to have a parking space. However, the town center does have parking available which is only a 1 minute walk away as an alternative. We hoped you had a lovely stay. Property Owner

Spacious cottage in Alston within easy access of various walks and the Steam Railway. Good base for visiting High and Low Force at Bowlees and Ashgill Force. We also visited Durham Cathedral about 1 hour away. We were lucky with the weather and had a brilliant time!

Thank you for your lovely comments, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. High and Low force are beautiful to view and close by. Durham is a stunning city and has loads of attractions, the Cathedral is amazing. Property Owner

Hi thank you for the review, this is the first time we have had any concerns regarding our neighbours. We will monitor this over the coming weeks but the area is a very idyllic peaceful setting. We hoped you enjoyed your stay otherwise. Property Owner

It was amazing and comfortable. Had a warm lovely welcoming feeling. Would definitely recommend and be going back. One thing I would say is we struggles to find the apartment as it’s tucked away off a main road and the parking but other than that it was perfect!!!

Thank you for your lovely feedback. The apartment is tucked away. This feedback has alerted us to the fact that the sat nav directions are not totally exact. We will give future guests more detailed instruction. Thank you for this input. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was amazing exactly like the photos."

I would highly recommend for family and friends to stay there. The flush in the toilet was a bit dodgy and it would constantly run the tank water into the bowl which became a problem during the night while trying to sleep even with the doors closed. I managed to fix it and then we had no problems. I moped up some water I had spilt in the living room and the tissue was really dirty. I'm not sure how, but the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom was immaculate. I had an amazing time and hope to stay here again in the future. Hannah

The property

This inviting, ground-floor apartment sits close the town centre of Alston, the highest market town in England, amongst the picturesque landscapes of the North Pennines.

Offering a deceptively spacious interior, 1 The Stables is a romantic bolthole for couples eager to break away from everyday life.

A huge benefit of this property is the sought-after off-road parking space, but with plenty of amenities in walking distance, you’ll hardly need the car!

Step into the open-plan living space, where you can take to the kitchen and impress with a home-cooked meal, before settling at the dining table and toasting to a much-needed break with your partner.

After a big indulgence, curl up beside the electric fire and catch up on your favourite shows.

When the weather’s nice, take the evening outside to the enclosed courtyard, ideal for a gin and tonic after a long day.

Enjoy a refreshing shower in the bathroom, before popping on your pyjamas and snuggling up in the bedroom, which comes with ample storage for your personal belongings.

The charming market town of Alston has plenty on offer; browse a wealth of independent businesses for a quirky gift, explore the Heritage & Transport Museum and discover a wide range of historical transport displays, before refuelling at a local pub with a hearty meal and crisp pint.

Walkers will be in awe of the surrounding area, offering heaps of incredible scenery that credit the AONB status, plus the Pennine Way passes through the village, which is a great route for walkers and cyclists.

For a different way of exploring the area, hop on board the heritage South Tynedale Railway, and why not a delicious treat in their Crossing café before climbing on board?

Penrith, a renowned tourist destination, is within driving distance and is well worth a visit for its range of services, gorgeous buildings, and natural beauty.

However you choose to spend your time here, 1 The Stables is a wonderful base for a holiday, all year round.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
