  • "To Tracey Many thanks for our stay at bank cottage, we found the house so warm and comfortable with everything we needed , so thank you."

We had a great break away exploring the area in particular Ashgill force. Just a few notes on leaving - we accidentally broke a dish when washing up. The cutlery draw is also dropping when opened and looked like a screw was missing , the door to the second lounge room from the living room has a loose door knob and the shower squeegee broke when we were using it. Again no complaints, the home is so well presented and we adored a fire and of course the views. Kind regards Karen

  • "A lovely cottage definitely would stay there again."

In fact I am looking for the summer to stay over again. The cottage was clean and tidy the view from the living room was amazing we watched the snow falls on the hills! The only things I have to mention is that the hand book needs updating as I was looking for a code to scan and notice it was when we had Covid. Also there wasn’t enough bin bags or even that blue ones. I wasn’t keen on that mattress hurt my back a little due to struggling to move about as you sink into it.

  • "Nice cottage but on arrival the front garden had filled rubbish bin liners left in front entrance to property."

. This was Christmas Eve, so no likelihood for it being removed. The Woodburner was left unchecked and found to have wet cloths and newspapers, wet wood, and rubbish left in it with water in the bottom, leaving it inoperable and and eyesore. The owner was contacted on Christmas Day in the Evening as it was very cold, and adjusted the central heating system and offered a refund..At no point did the owner apologise for all the problems we had with this situation.. Our cottage Christmas experience was totally ruined… Since arriving home and contacting Sykes, I regret I am no further forward … I feel that your customer care policy is extremely Lack Lustre and the problem has yet to be resolved…!

Thank you for your feedback, I am sorry your stay did not meet your expectations. However I feel I must address several key points you have omitted. As a gesture of good will I called you the day before your check in and explained that the cottage was vacant and therefore If you wanted to check in early I had no objections especially as it would be Christmas Eve. You explained our daughter was home from the Middle East and is always cold. We spoke at length regarding the cottage and how equipped it was along with discussing where to visit and what to do, I explained there is a wood burner and heating which you can control in the cottage. You arrived on 24th December and reported no issues with the wood burning stove or indeed the temperature in the cottage which was thermostatically set to a comfortable temperature. At 5pm on Christmas Day I received an irate and abusive call from a lady I believe may have been your daughter stating there was an issue with the wood burning stove. I apologised profusely for the alleged issues with the stove and explained that she could increase the temperature in the cottage using the thermostat she said she "didn't want to touch it". The temperature in the cottage was the same on Christmas Day as it had been on Christmas Eve, You state at "at no point did the owner apologise" this is untrue. I apologised several times throughout the call and offered a refund as recompense. Additionally on check out day you were still in the property 2 hours after leaving time when the housekeeping team arrived. With regards to the rubbish I also explained that Alston have a no bin system in operation and therefore rubbish is collected by means of a Kerb side bag collection which would account for a bag being present in the garden. There were a couple of issues though. The balcony was very slippery and dangerous and the door to the living room, direct to the kitchen is very low and I belted my head on it a number of times ( cut my head open infact ) I know it has a sign, buts not too obvious and I would suggest putting something in front of the door to block its use. I think, apart from that, the cottage is lovely with easy access to shops and pubs etc, I woul recommend it

Locals very friendly and good crack in the pubs. Shops for a variety of needs to help enjoy your stay. . Sadly no personal touch what so ever in the property or even a small welcome gift. Front yard full of weeds and overgrown with climbing plants untrained blocking light from both the snug windows. Owners really missing a trick here as could put a bench at the front to enjoy the morning sun and to watch the world go by. But as already said no personal touch for enjoyment and pleasure of what could be an exceptional holiday rental. Alston is a great place to stay with lots to do and see. View from the balcony is outstanding and for that alone is worth staying for.

A great hub with lots of amenities and access to the wider area. Bank cottage ticked all the boxes, making for a comfortable stay. The beds were very comfy, as was the living area and was very dog friendly. Although there is no designated parking space directly outside the property, we never had an issue getting a parking spot on the street even if it was slightly lower down from the property. The only flaw with the cottage is that there is little worktop space for preparing food etc in the kitchen - however this is understandable as it is cottage and can't be helped, and there is a huge dining table to mitigate this. All in all we had a fantastic week in Alston staying at Bank Cottage - thank you.

  • "I would like to start by saying how lovely Bank Cottage is!"

We actually stayed a year ago and got engaged whilst staying there so we decided to come back again this year as it will always hold a special place in our hearts. We loved it that much we got my dad to stay there also last year and he loved it as well so thank you! The only thing we would have to comment on is the oven, whenever you open it and it’s on you get hit in the face with loads of smoke that smells burnt but it’s not a major issue I just thought I would bring it up so you are aware! also there were no blue bin bags under the sink so we went and got some black bags and put our general waste in there, we couldn’t find the general waste bin at the bin yard so we weren’t too sure where to leave the bags of rubbish? But apart from that it was a fantastic stay and we will definitely be back again in a few years, thank you for letting us stay at your wonderful cottage!

Only downside was we asked for child amenities (high chair) and couldn't find this so had to make do without which wasn't ideal (would be good to have a guide on where this was, plus the travel cot which we did find but wasn't obvious). The instructions listed for departure didn't match what we could find in the property (e.g. zipped bag for linnens) however hopefully what we did was fine. Other than that lovely place and would stay again.

Thank you for your feedback - we're really pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay! On checking the booking details, it doesn't look like there was a request for a cot or a high chair to be made available for you during your stay, but we would have contacted the owner to arrange this had you been in touch with us. The cot and high chair are already in the property in a locked cupboard. The owner and housekeeper's contact details are also provided within the welcome information - I'm sorry if you missed this. It would have also have been nice to have some washing up liquid etc provided. It would have also been nice to have a welcome hamper of some sort. I gave a really good feedback rating for comfort and facilities, however, I would concur with past reviews on cleanliness, in the kitchen in particular. There had certainly not been a deep 'Covid' clean elsewhere. The welcome 'pack' was a bit disappointing compared to all our other Sykes Cottage holidays and short breaks. Watch the toilet as the seat drifts! Overall, although an annoying start to our break, the cottage was lovely and didn't spoil our stay. We were able to park outside the cottage and Alston is a lovely place to visit. The locals were really friendly and there are some lovely walks without having to go out in the car. If you love history then check out the Roman Army museum, Hadrians wall , Epiacum and the Vindolanda Fort. Hexham is worthwhile a visit.

  • "Completely disappointed with our stay at Bank Cottage over Christmas."

Firstly, Christmas decorations and a small tree would have been lovely, considering the money spent for a few days and reading from a previous review a few years that it was nicely decorated for Christmas. Cleanliness in cottage was lacking, particularly in the kitchen which was absolutely shocking. Myself and my mother had to clean everything the next morning before actually cooking in the area. I’m assuming the owners don’t visit regularly and rely only on the housekeeping to stay on top of things as surely they wouldn’t think the level of cleanliness and standard of equipment acceptable? Kettle and toaster in a terrible condition. Baking trays were black. Cups still had stains on them. One wine glass in the property. Had to clean every handle on doors as very sticky. Bathroom was badly in need of repairs. Shower tray leaked all over floor when in shower so had to jump in and out as quickly as possible. Walls in bathroom and kitchen badly needing painted. Completely disappointed in the cottage, especially when you are asked to leave at 9am for a ‘covid clean’ when the place is hardly getting a basic clean! Would not return.

  • "We had a great stay."

Everything was as expected and the space is deceptively large. We had a dog with us and we worried about not having a garden, but there is a playing field right behind the house for the when he needed a toilet break. We spent all day out of the cottage anyway so wasn't an issue for us, but something to bare in mind if you're going to spend a long time at the cottage with your furry friend. The only other minor issue was that we had difficulty starting and maintaining a fire, it appeared as though there was a blockage somewhere, as soon as we shut the door the fire went out indicating no oxygen to keep it going. It wasn't a huge deal and the central heating was quick to warm the house up. Very good location and wouldn't hesitate visiting again if we went back to the same area, close if you don't mind driving to the lakes and other places like kielder.

I especially loved the snug, with a chest full of jigsaws and games, cards dominos etc. The kitchen supplies everything you could possibly want. The bed linen and pillows were of great hotel quality, as were the lovely fluffy white bath towels. Unfortunately we did not have good weather the week we stayed only one day of clear sky's. We had a bit of a problem with the door to the decking area, I left a note regarding this in the comments book. As we had no phone signal could not really contact anyone, I believe that this became a problem because of the rainfall, but I am sure can easily be remedied. It is very hilly with lots of cobbled streets, not the most ideal place for the less infirm. The torches supplied are a must if venturing out after dark due to the uneven pavements. The Angel Public House dating back to the 1600 serves wonderful food. The Co-op is handy. So even if you just want to relax or explore, this is a beautiful place. I loved the dancing hares ornament and I plan to buy one, it will remind me of Bank Cottage and its quirky little touches. We did not have a problem parking outside the cottage apart from the last few days when road works were in place. It is on a very busy road, something to bear in mind if you have a pet as there is no garden just a paved front which is gated. The villagers were very friendly and welcoming. Well done Bank Cottage for creating this lovely little haven of rest.

Quite the sun trap. Same view from the shower room. Beautiful bed linen and fluffy towels and lots of hot water. Cottage was five minutes from the station, where the little train ran from and the other way was a garage with very modern Spar grocery shop. Over the road was the incline into the village where at the top of the bank was a Co op from behind which you could walk along the river to the seven sisters falls. There are not many shops, a few pubs and the town hall with tourist information. We visited Ullswater(50mins), Hexham and Abbey(35mins)Stanhope(30mins) and High Force (50mins) and took the little train one day. No problem with parking, right in front of the cottage. The scenery on our days out was absolutely stunning and I would return in an instant to visit again and would stay here. The only downside was a downstairs toilet during the night, but we knew this when we booked. Thank you Tracey for allowing us to stay in your beautiful cottage. One thing I must point out I did not realise the garden does not belong to the cottage and there is no access to it. It didn't bother us but perhaps with young children, no where to play. I really think Sykes should make it clear in their description of the accommodation.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
