Clean throughout & a lovely warm welcome from the owners. Who also gave us info on the village events for Halloween & Bonfire night. Hot hot tub - which we loved with stunning views through the day & star gazing when it got dark! Would definitely visit again!

All she done was bang the doors all night long and we never got any sleep. We had enough so we left early and as we was packing our cars she thrown a pair of her knickers at us, and omg we was shocked. We did not feel it was safe as she clearly had issues. Tony and Susan offered another week end stay for free as a gesture of goodwill, which was so lovely of them. We have just came back from staying there again and had a peaceful chilled stay. Massive thank you to them. We loved it there and we will be going again well long as that unhindge women is not there again haaaa. Sorry I no she won't be lol but we will be. If you want to go anywhere with beautiful views walks and amazing I would definitely recommend staying here. Thank you again xx

Friendly & helpful owners. Comfortable beds and great open plan living space. Generally clean although laminate floors could do with a wash. I wiped down the fronts of all the kitchen units before we left too which made a big difference in the sunlight. Very dated bathroom which could do with an upgrade, loose shower fitting over the bath with plastic curtain. We didn’t use the hot tub because we have one at home but it looked great.

  • "We enjoyed the break away from home, but just a few drawbacks."

Bathroom is the only room downstairs , with all other accommodation located up a steep flight of stairs. Location may only be 1mile from Alston, but you can only walk there if you cross the fields, ( high grass)as the road has very fast vehicles and no pavements, just very high grass again. The outdoor area for "The Hayloft" is very small and backs onto a field. Surrounding area for the hot tub was not cleaned, not that we used it as it was terrible weather.

  • "The Hayloft was great accommodation for us."

Beds were comfortable. Owners were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The Hot Tub was just 'what the Doctor ordered' after a day travelling around the area. The only minor detail was the heating, the radiators didn't appear to respond to the hall room thermostat, so I had to turn each radiator stat down when we left each day, no point them being on when when you're not there. Lastly, the front door lock is showing signs of wear and proving difficult to lock.

The owner was very friendly and welcoming. (There was even coffee, tea, sugar, milk and biccies left out on our arrival). The lights surrounding the cabin (where you could dress and dry with heating) made the hot tub experience pretty and added romance. We were sad to leave and we will be returning at some point. Highly recommend.

Had a lovely few days at the cottage which was well equipped and very cozy. The open fire was lovely and warm. Our only problem was finding 3 rather large pieces of glass in the hottub. Totally not the owners fault & I believe some previous guests had smashed a glass. Perhaps a supply of plastic wine glasses would prevent this from happening in future. But we did enjoy our stay thanks

There was no sorry we have ignored you or how can we help correct this or even sorry you have concerns? Just a blunt either go or cancel no refund reply!! Needless to say we won't be booking through Sykes again and have advised others of this before they consider your site if at all.

I feel the resident owners were neglectful in this matter as the problem was highlighted to them by previous guests in their visitor book. We are familiar with this particular shower at home, so feel their excuses of water pressure and "no one else has complained" we're a bit lame. For the weekly fee paid, I would have liked more respect as a paying guest. The owners were both very nice and pleasant, but complacent in providing this basic facility.

The Hayloft is mainly situated on the first floor and has a cleverly designed open plan living area, allowing guests to discuss their day in front of the warming open fire, whilst the evening meal is being prepared nearby.

Two double bedrooms, one with a handy zip/link bed for flexible sleeping, and a ground floor family bathroom, complete the accommodation.

About the location

ALSTON

Melmerby 8 miles; Penrith 18 miles; Stanhope 20 miles; Hexham 23 miles; Carlisle 29 miles; Barnard Castle 30 miles.

Alston is set in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by a unique landscape of moorland, hills, rivers and waterfalls, and is England's highest market town. This intriguing town, with its cobbled streets and fascinating nooks and crannies, was the location for ITV's productions of Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist. Alston and the North Pennines have long inspired artists and writers; the poet and writer W H Auden loved the area and today Alston is an inspiration to the craftspeople who live and work there. There is a host of unusual shops in the town including quality crafts and galleries. Take a ride on one of the lovingly-restored steam and diesel engines through the beautiful scenery of the South Tyne valley on the South Tynedale Railway which runs from Alston through to Slaggyford. The River Tyne is also noted as one of the finest salmon rivers in England and day-ticket fishing is available locally. The North Pennines used to be one of the wealthiest lead mining centres in Europe, and the Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a great family day out with interactive exhibitions. With the drive along the A686 recognised by the AA as one of the world's best drives, and northern Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, all within easy reach, this makes a superb base.
