“We were told that there was a garden with a bench, but weren't told that it was a common access path around house so it wasn't private.”

Our dogs were constantly barking as people were going past the windows. Ended up indoors with curtains shut. We should have been made aware of this before booking the cottage as it would have been a deciding factor for me.i.e. I wouldn't have booked.

The property

This traditional Lakeland Stone Cottage is situated around a small courtyard, a stone's throw from the centre of Ambleside.

Lovingly restored, it retains many original character features and is a great choice for families or couples looking to be within walking distance of the village centre. As you enter the property on the ground floor you are greeted with a large, open plan living area with underfloor heating and comfortable seating for cosy evenings in front of the log burning stove.

The shaker style kitchen is beautifully equipped and leads to the traditional dining area with a dining table and a delightful window seat.

On the first floor, the luxuriously appointed fully tiled bathroom boasts a double walk in shower alongside a bath, hand basin and W.C.  The Kings Size double bedroom has a lovely window seat overlooking the river and the single bedroom overlooks the world famous Bridge House.

On the second floor there is a twin bedroom with LCD TV that is an ideal space for children.  In front of the cottage is a shared courtyard which offers off-road parking for one car.

To the rear of the cottage is a patio area with a picnic table, the perfect place for relaxing with an evening drink after a long day exploring the fells or dining outside in the summer sun.

Barney's Cottage is a stone's throw from the iconic Bridge House and a short walk into the village centre. Ambleside has a great selection of shops, restaurants and pubs and the village is a great central spot for exploring the Mountains and Lakes of the National Park.

Why not visit the Armitt Museum and Gallery where you can delve into the remarkable history of Lakeland Life and discover the bygone times of your most favourite Lake District locations.

Beyond Ambleside, Grasmere is a short drive away where you can sample the world famous Grasmere Gingerbread or visit the home of William Wordsworth.

This is an exceptionally presented cottage, ideal for exploring this stunning area at any time of the year.

About the location

Windermere 4 miles; Grasmere 4 mile; Keswick 15 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
