  • "This was our sixth stay at Bield How."

It is a great base location with off road parking, easy access to plenty of walks and all that Ambleside has to offer. Sadly the Aga was not working this time, due to it needing some maintenance. Additionally, we did find that some of the crockery and cutlery was not clean and everything had to be washed before use. We do however hope to return again in the future.

  • "Our second visit to an excellent location and spacious holiday home."

We used it as a base for daily walking trips, leaving the car in the parking space provided, and had everything we needed for cooking, relaxing and recovering from our adventures. The local bus station is so useful, and being within walking distance of the pier too. Our only criticism was the bathroom cleanliness - same as last year. We had to clean the drains to get the shower to drain, which given there was no cleaning equipment in the property was pretty unpleasant.

Thank you for your feedback - we are glad that you enjoyed your second stay at our home in Ambleside. We, like you, are disappointed at the standard of cleanliness you have reported and have raised it ourselves with Heart of the Lakes as they are responsible for the cleaning of the property. We hope to welcome you to Bield How again soon! The Owners - Bield How Property Owner

This will be shared with the property owner. Great stay and lovely property, some advice meant to help... The 'codes' for Netflix and Sky were not available and a call to request them from H of the Lakes was never returned. Several taps need were dripping slightly. Sticky wardrobe doors in main Bedroom Old tech tungsten bulbs in bedside lights very hot; dangerous? Toaster not operating correctly, worn out? Some grease spots left by cleaners and the old kettle was badly furred up, but replaced on request after 24 hours. But, aside from these points a lovely home with great appointments and 99% spotless.

Cons: Bathroom sanitary ware could be cleaner and no cleaning products provided to improve. Kitchen quite outdated and tired but not a major issue Bed quilts too warm for summer weather TV remote did not work, even after changing the batteries Pros: Great location and access to Ambleside King bed a big plus for us and comfortable Good wardrobes, with plenty of hangars Good showers Pots, pans and glassware all immaculate

  • "The location was excellent on the edge of Ambleside village."

Access to pubs, restaurants and walks meant we didn’t have to use the car too much. The cottage had good facilities and was very comfortable.

  • "Property felt like a home from home which was to a high standard."

My only negative and this is tiny the inner back door was sometimes awkward to gain entry and you had to jiggle the key in the lock but on the whole a very enjoyable week with everything within walking distance and bus stops if you need them very handy.

  • "The house has a nice sized lounge, and a large kitchen dining room, which we spent most of our time in because of the AGA cooker keeping it lovely and warm, very nice."

I'm a recently retired gas engineer, so having a central heating system that wasn't reduced or limited via room stat in any way was very welcome. The AGA cooker heats the water very well, just the one comment though as the temperature gets quite high, maybe a little note stuck to the wall?

The property is well equipped, perfectly located, with off road parking, great views and we found it clean and comfortable. We hope to return again in the future.

  • "Bield How is looking a little bit tired."

The kitchen needs updating, the double mattress needs replacing and the sofas in the living room have seen better days. The Aga is great, we didn't need to put the central heating on because it was warm with the heat from that. The bathrooms are fine with a nice big shower cubicle in one and a big bath in the other. A few cobwebs on the ceilings but don't think this is up to the customer to clean the ceilings.

Thank you for your comments. Although when we, as owners stay at Bield we find the bed perfectly comfortable we have taken yours and other comments on board and have replaced the king mattress. We will also investigate replacing the sofas. So pleased that you enjoyed the Aga! Please always contact Heart of the Lakes with any housekeeping issues during your stay and they will come and resolve them immediately. Property Owner

  • "Bield How is a lovely property, but the comfort of our stay was severely marred by the Aga."

It was a mild week in September and when we asked for the Aga to be switched off, we were told the owners would not allow it. The property was therefore stiflingly hot, even with windows wide open. Not great for the environment either, to be wasting all that energy. Also, calling Heart of the Lakes and getting through to someone at Sykes in Chester lacks the personal service and local knowledge that we used to experience in the past. We wouldn’t book this property again during the months when the Aga is on.

Unfortunately, our Aga does not cooperate well to being turned off and on and requires an Aga service engineer to turn it back on again hence our reluctance to agreeing to it being turned off totally. We would not have had an issue with it being turned down if that request had been made and will make that clearer in our instruction file. As previously noted in a response to another comment, we will take the warmer weather in September into consideration and not have the Aga turned on again until October in the future. We are sorry that your stay was not as expected on this occasion but look forward to you rebooking again in the future. Property Owner

  • "We've stayed twice before but I would no longer recommend the property."

The owner insisting that the Aga oven stays on at optimum level (this issue isn't mentioned in the property description) is absolutely ridiculous. Arriving on a warm day, the oven was belting out so much heat that it must have been over 30 deg C in the kitchen. The only way to manage it was to open every window in the property and use the large fan continuously in the lounge. I note that the visitors book has been removed from the property (as mentioned by previous holidaymakers) but the numerous requests in the property mentioning not to try and adjust the Aga shows that others have experienced the same. Goodness knows how the cleaners manage. It's very sad as the owners have clearly put a lot of effort into making it a nice property - but their love of an economic fuel bill overrides their concern for guests

Unfortunately, we were not aware of you requesting to adjust the Aga during your stay. We are happy for Heart of the Lakes to adjust the Aga during a stay but prefer visitors not to adjust it for themselves as it requires delicate balancing to get it back up to temperature for cooking which is what many of our visitors enjoy. We do not have the Aga on during the summer but in previous years our visitors in September have been grateful for the heat provided by it being on so we have always had it put on again at the beginning of September. However clearly climate change is having an effect and we will take your comments on board and not have the Aga turned on again in future until October. Our visitors book sadly had to be removed as a result of the Covid considerations when we were requested to remove all unessential items from the property. Hopefully in the future the visitors book will return again as this has previously provided feedback on potential improvements. As owners we have tried to incorporate our visitors requests to the best of our ability as we want our visitors to enjoy the house as much as we do. We are sorry that Bield How did not live up to your high Expectations from your previous visits on this occasion but hope that you will return again sometime in the future. Property Owner

Discover the light and airy kitchen/diner for all your culinary essentials, including an electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and a handy washer/dryer if your trails take off on a muddier route.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
