  • "We found it comfortable and spacious, good location and very easy to feel at home in."

I appreciated the rapid replacement of the freezer. The oven and dishwasher both worked despite their age and lack of visible oven controls! Also quite hard to get the bath plug in properly but all minor details in a very nice cottage. Worth warning people that there are no supplies ie not even salt and pepper in the house! We would happily stay there again.

  • "We were really pleased with this accommodation which was spacious and comfortable in a secluded location."

We did several walks from the door including Wansfell Pike and the Fairfield Horseshoe. The centre of Ambleside is within easy walking distance too.

  • "Property was really clean, nice and convenient to the city centre."

Definitely worth of money. The view was amazing, waterfall sound was soothing. In house fecilities were up to the mark. Beds were so comfy. Few issues we had face in the bathroom where fan was not working and water force from shower was very slow and drainage was blocked too water was unable to pass. Otherwise we had a great time at the villa.

  • "The furniture (sofa's) in the living room were uncomfortable."

The table light in the living room did not work. No table for use on the balcony. Light missing from the cluster in the kitchen. Kitchen units tired, door almost falling off. Old used soap left in the shower tray and bathroom sink was dirty. Double bed mattress was uncomfortable. The upstairs landing floor outside the twin room was dangerous with the floor giving way under the carpet. Generally the whole property is old and needs a makeover. It was over priced compared to other properties used with Sykes. We will not return to this property. Despite this we had an enjoyable week and continue using Sykes for holiday breaks at the moment.

  • "The worst cottage we’ve ever stayed in!"

It’s uncomfortable, dated and dirty. We’ve booked many times with Heart of the Lakes and the standards have always been very high and we’ve always had a lovely relaxing time. Unfortunately, Blencathra did not meet these usual standards. The first issue was parking as our car, an Hyundai Tucson, could not fit in the garage. We were not aware this was our only allocated parking space. To be fair to HotL, they agreed we could park outside so this was no longer an issue. With regards to the cottage, it was so dated and uncomfortable. All three beds were extremely uncomfortable and mattresses must be about ten years old as we were literally sleeping on springs. We complained from Sunday to Thursday but got no where and HoftL said it was not their responsibility to ensure the standards of the cottage but we’re the responsibility of the cottage owner. On Tuesday, someone came to the cottage and put a duvet under the sheet of the double bed as a way to make it more comfortable. The beds are so far gone that this did not help. Nothing was done about the other two beds. In addition to this the sofa was dirty, smelly, threadbare and all base cushions were so old and had no support that relaxing in the evening was difficult. The house had many cobwebs and had clearly not been cleaned properly or thoroughly. I’d definitely give this cottage a swerve and what I’m most disappointed about is that the company we booked through blamed the cottage owner and took no responsibility. I hope our concerns are addressed for future bookings so no other families are subjected to this on their holiday.

  • "The photos online don’t do the cottage justice."

It is cosier and Nicer than I thought it would be. Lovely comfy sofas and the bedrooms had nice cupboard space. Also the living room was a good family game area. The flat is on multiple levels so everyone had a room to go to be alone if needed. However the cleaning could have been tad better - but that’s usual with these quick changeover properties - we spotted a couple of spiders in ceiling and bits left inside drawers. The kitchen was well equipped but agree with the other reviewer that a few more large mugs would be good so you’re not running the dishwasher everyday. Also I doubt all kitchen utensils are cleaned properly and much felt untouched for a while. The mattress was pretty bad in main bedroom - old and when one person moves the whole thing squeaks and moves. We loved the distance to town (away from the bustle but only a few mins walk up/downhill which we liked for the exercise). I also loved the sound of the waterfall behind the flat - you couldn’t hear when the windows were shut but it was really relaxing so we left them open. I would stay again if not for the mattress. (Also I was told there would be mattress protectors but there weren’t.). I would also say Ambleside is much much nicer to stay in than Bowness or the More touristy towns - which are more like a commercial in shops and atmosphere than you want when you come to the Lake District (friends staying In Bowness much preferred Ambleside).

  • "Most uncomfortable double bed (firm +++) I have ever slept on."

Kitchen needing modernising. Good location but due to above would certainly not book again

  • "All as described and clean."

Just what we needed. You may want to stress that parking is in a garage and give access dimensions. Some estate residents are particular about parking and it helps to have some skill in manoeuvring in tight spaces (which not all visitors do!)

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
