  • "The cottage is cosy and in a perfect spot."

The garden is wonderful, but for what we paid, it wasn't the usual standard we are used to. The manuals just had instructions for items, nothing interesting to read at all. No plastic bags for the waste bin, thankfully we had brought some with us, no "welcome pack", toilet seat loose in bathroom. Just basic things were there really, we don't have this in other Sykes properties and we've stayed in a few. Also had to move cobwebs from three rooms. So a bit disappointing on arrival, but we made the best of it and enjoyed the Lakes, didn't ruin the holiday. One last point .. parking .. it states one small car in the description. I have a Fiesta, but with the other cars parked up which were 4x4s, was impossible to park, so we parked in the main car park down the road which was £38.50 for a week.

  • "We had a fabulous week at Briardale Cottage, it was lovely and comfortable, very clean we will certainly recommend this cottage to others."

The only reason I didn't leave a review in visitors book, I didn't have a pen! The only thing I would suggest, and this isn't a criticism, but a slip mat in the shower would be safer than not having one. My husband who has a knee injury didn't feel safe whilst showering. But like I say, it's a polite suggestion. Thank you for making this holiday such a memorable one, and the pub around the corner The Golden Rule is very welcoming! Great atmosphere! Kind regards Lorraine Miller

Appears to have a new shower with a good strength and although boiler, which also seemed new, was in the bedroom, it was very quiet and did not disturb. Property ideally situated and with a seated area in the garden is perfect for those sunny days.

  • "The key question is always "would I stay here again?"

" and this time the answer is unfortunately no. On the plus side the property has an absolutely fantastic location, 60 secs walk from town, a pretty (but not enclosed) garden and a nice wood burner. The negatives far outweigh these positives though. There is a very bad smell in the kitchen, like years of grease are ingrained in it and a strong smell of drains from the down stairs toilet. Try as we might with candles etc we could not cover it and it returns very quickly, it's really unpleasant. The next main issue is that the boiler is very noisy and it's in a cupboard in your bedroom, we had to turn it off each night to be able to sleep which results in a freezing cold house in the morning. The shower is also a really, really old design with very bad water pressure so no refreshing hot shower after a day on the hills. Finally the place is just in dire need of upgrade, very tired decor throughout and comes with the absolute bare minimum essentials when you arrive, every other cottage we've ever stayed in had more. The "welcome pack" for this cottage is just a book of equipment manuals and risk assessments rather than the usual personalised book about the cottage and how to make the best of it. Seems like it is being run with minimal effort and investment. We enjoyed our week in Ambleside as always but compared to other similar priced properties we've stayed in before this one was a let down.

  • "I thought the house had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay."

It would have been better with a key safe at the property rather than having to collect and drop off the keys at the office, also the parking was very tight and maybe an option to use the large open car park across the road foc would have been appreciated.

  • "Really enjoyed our first stay at Briardale, great location being close to Ambleside with beautiful south facing views of the fells from the garden."

We didn’t have any problems with on site parking of an estate car like we thought we might from reading the listing- diagram in the porch was super helpful! The only thing we feel could and should be improved is the high level cleaning- lots of visible cobwebs which had built up over time. We are definitely looking to return for our next visit in the new year! Thank you for a lovely stay!

  • "This cottage is perfectly situated in Ambleside and ideal for 2 people."

There were a couple of things that were disappointing though. The wood burner in the fireplace was not laid with logs which would have been handy as there were none in the cottage. We couldn't turn the central heating on and we were cold. Also, very basic cooking items such as salt, pepper and oil were not available to cook on arrival. I understand that perhaps we should have brought these with us, but other cottages we have been to have supplied small amounts of these. The pillows on the bed need renewing too. In saying all of this though, we had a really good holiday in the cottage and all of the above did nothing to spoil it.

  • "Had a lovely week at briardale cottage ."

Car parking was a bonus and had no problem, although I can see it could be . I think there was 3 private spaces and 5 cottages. We was approached by a holiday maker arriving just after us as they thought we were in their space , but showed our clear instruction that if belonged to our cottage. There is a car park very close at a cost of £35 a week , we had looked into this before hand as wasn’t sure we’d fit our car into the space . Garden area is lovely and the property is a very cosy clean little cottage very close to all amenities. Lovely log burner but no wood was provided. Lots of wardrobe Space and a handy porch for all your walking gear . We had a fabulous stay and would recommend this property.

  • "A lovely little cottage in a fantastic location, we would book this again!"

The living room with its log burner was great for chilly evenings, and the little patio was a lovely suntrap in the evening with a beautiful view for al fresco dining. The bed was comfy. As described/shown in the photos of the property, the bathroom is rather small but not an issue for two people, plus there is a downstairs loo. The kitchen is relatively small but we found it well equipped with pans etc, it had everything we needed. We had no issues with parking during our stay, reversing into a good sized space at the end of the lane, but we imagine in peak season if all the cottages are full it might be a bit more challenging dependent on how others park their cars. The pub (The Golden Rule) just around the corner was definitely a bonus!

  • "Beautiful little cottage and was immaculately clean."

Home from home with everything you need to cook. Small complaint of boiler being in bedroom, when it’s cold and you need the heating, the boiler kicked in and woke us up frequently. Also perhaps the provision of a first aid kit should be provided.

  • "We had a good stay at Briardale cottage, it just wasn't up to the standard of previous cottages we have stayed at."

It was a little tired and in need of some refurbishment, and the dead mouse on the glass above the stairs was the first thing we saw everytime we passed it. Personally we like a tv in the bedroom and there wasn't one, we understand that's not for everyone but makes a difference to us. It was useful to have a parking space right outside our cottage and to be so close to the town is perfect. The usual information pack that we read as soon as we get to any of your cottages was pretty much empty, not the usual standard we've come to expect from staying in one of your cottages. These are helpful, everything in one place to refer to if you have a query but you'll see what I mean when you look at this cottage's pack-empty. It was a comfortable stay but I'm a little disappointed that we've booked the same cottage for next April.

  • "The cottage comes with allocated off road parking."

However, the parking space was extremely difficult to get in and out of (and we have a small car) and we were reliant on the other tenants in the cottage block parking considerately - which unfortunately sometimes didn’t happen. Would have preferred a parking permit to avoid the daily parking trauma.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
