  • "Well equipped kitchen."

The overhead shower was great! Good location....be prepared....it is up a hill. Once we parked at the accommodation we used local transport bus/ferry to get around...or walked locally. We enjoyed our stay...thank you.

  • "The cottage was well situated for us all very quiet area but not to far to the hub of Ambleside ."

...very clean and well equipped nice to have two bathrooms both with shower although the fan in the ensuite wasn't working which did produce a very steamed up bathroom overall though a very good base to spend time in Ambleside

  • "The fact it’s hilly should be mentioned in your description, people with mobility issues may struggle."

The shower in the ensuite needs replacing. The other shower is fantastic. First property we’ve stayed in without a basic welcome pack. For £210 per night, a bottle of water, tea, milk etc should be affordable to leave for your guests. It is a lovely, clean property, in a good location. The negatives wouldn’t put us off re-booking.

Thank you for your comments. We will look at the description to ensure that it is accurate. Not all properties provide a welcome pack as it is self catering. Thank you- The Heart of the Lakes Owner Relations Team Property Owner

  • "Very good accomodation, with own parking space."

Well positoned for access to Ambleside shops etc. We used the excellent bus service from Bowness through to Grasmere. On the slightly negative side, there is an appartment directly above number 12, and the floor boarding there is very creeky, when people are in.

  • "We found apartment spacious but very dark with little natural light."

Accommodation was quite well equipped but could have been better, no large pan had to use 2 small pans to make enough pasta for 4 people, some areas were a a bit tired and in need of an update kitchen and bathrooms in particular (antique shower in en-suite bathroom) , overall a great location and base to explore from if a bit basic.

  • "The property is in need of restoration, it’s tired, dated and feels like an old retirement flat."

While the boiler, washing machine and dishwasher are obvious updates, things like door hardware are difficult to use. The parking for the property should be flagged for those with mobility issues, as it’s on a steep slope making exiting a vehicle difficult. The property above was occupied and you could tell where the residents walked, when they were talking, etc. Not a good experience when they arrive back at 10 pm and are moving around until gone 1 am. The location is great, but not enough for us to want to book again I’m afraid and having experienced some absolutely great accommodation, feel this is overpriced for what’s provided.

  • "Nice accommodation with very good room layout."

Cleanliness was pretty good but not exceptional which is slightly baffling when checkout time has been shortened and check in time extended to provide more time for a “deep” clean to be carried out during these unsettling times of the Covid epidemic. Little things such as light bulbs not working and a lack of matching cutlery/crockery is frustrating when you are paying in excess of £800 per week for the accommodation. The en-suite shower was poor in terms of water flow but the shower in the second bathroom was ok. If you are a light sleeper you would struggle to sleep in the twin bedded room because of light pollution from the outside security lighting. This could be easily sorted with black out curtains. In summary little things take the gloss of this accommodation and these could be easily corrected. I would not rule out staying at Gillybeck again but I think it is overpriced, with a little bit more attention to detail it could be improved noticeably

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
