“Great little cottage just outside of Ambleside, very cosy with the log burner on in the evenings, 5 minute walk into the village which has everything you need in terms of shops / pubs / restaurants etc.”

It’s worth noting the walk back is up a very steep hill, wasn’t a problem at all for us but may be for others. The cottage itself was clean, comfortable and well equipped, with allocated off road parking directly outside the property, which can sometimes be hard to come by in The Lakes. The log burner was easy to use and the cupboards were well stocked with various board games - there is a TV however we did not use it. Phone signal is intermittent however there is adequate wifi. Although there was only the two of us, you would comfortably fit 4-6 humans in this property. The bed was very comfortable and it was pleasant to wake up to the sound of sheep and tiny horses, with lovely views onto Wansfell / Loughrigg out of the windows. We queried if we were the first guests in this property as no one had signed the guest book or left a review online prior to our visit. Ultimately, having stayed in many Lake District properties over the years, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would absolutely consider staying here again. The only constructive criticism is that there was no welcome pack - it is rare for properties not to leave these in this day and age - some milk and biscuits would have saved us from having to go straight out to the shop on arrival before we could have a brew (however in fairness there was some tea / coffee left in the cupboards, as well as various frozen items, ? from previous occupants).

The property

Tucked away on the iconic 'Struggle', connecting Kirkstone and Ambleside.

Within the sought-after Lake District National Park, rests this charming, white-washed holiday home, Hilber Cottage.

Idyllically positioned in a semi-rural setting and framing scenic views across the surrounding countryside to Loughrigg, Hilber Cottage makes for a lovely base for both families and friends looking to explore this picturesque region.

Two off-road parking spaces greet you upon arrival, making loading and unloading an easy task; step over the threshold and enter into the handy entrance hall to discard your muddy boots and walking gear after a day of adventure.

Be welcomed into the snug sitting room, where you can look forward to putting your feet up and relaxing on the sofa to catch up on your favourite television series with a crisp glass of wine as the rustic woodburning stove crackles nearby.

Make your way through to the adjoining kitchen/diner, home to a well-designed kitchen, fully-equipped with a range of modern amenities such as a handy washing machine and dishwasher, as well as a sociable dining area with seating for six.

Cook up a storm and gather together with your loved ones around the table, or in the warmer months, step outside to indulge in a spot of alfresco dining on the patio, backed by the far-reaching views of the surrounding fells.

As your eyes grow heavy, climb the stairs to the first-floor where you'll find three thoughtfully laid-out bedrooms, a bunk room, suitable for adults and children alike, as well as a king-size room, and a final twin room, each boasting a light and airy decor and providing ample storage to house your belongings.

Servicing the property is the family bathroom, fit with both a bath and overhead shower, presenting guests with the option of a quick morning rinse or an indulgent soak.

A short walk from your doorstep will bring you into the heart of Ambleside, where you'll find a host of fabulous amenities to assist with your self-catering needs; indulge in a spot of pub grub in a quintessentially English setting at The Ambleside Inn, catch a spot of live music served alongside a refreshing pint of cask ale at The Lily Bar, or pick up some last-minute ingredients at the village store.

There's plenty to see and do in the area, with the cultural heritage of the Lake District on display at Armitt Library & Museum Centre and the remarkable waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force, cascading 70-ft through the nearby woodland.

Avid cyclists can take on the ascent to the top of The Struggle, a challenging trail running alongside Hilber Cottage toward Kirkstone Pass, where the summit is located at 446 meters above sea level.

Spend a fun-filled day out visiting the popular town of Bowness-on-Windermere, where you can discover the stories of the famed writer at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, try your hand a sailing with a boat trip on the lake, or get dressed to the nines and enjoy a night on the town. Get better acquainted with your surroundings and embark on an adventure through the varying terrains and landscapes of the Lake District National Park; challenge yourself with a hike to the peak of Scaffel Pike, the tallest mountain in England, stroll through the vibrant grounds of Stagshaw Garden, decorated in trees, shrubbery and colourful flowers, or walk alongside the banks of Lake Windermere, soaking in the peaceful ambiance of the tranquil waters.

Whether you're looking for adventure or relaxation, Hilber Cottage offers the perfect base.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Windermere 4 miles; Grasmere 4 mile; Keswick 15 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
