Appleby Castle Cottages

These historic cottages are set within the grounds of Appleby Castle, situated at the foot of the Pennines on the edge of the Lake District in the county town of the ancient royal borough of Westmorland. Appleby Castle is a 12th century motte and bailey castle that cherishes one of the few remaining intact Norman keeps in the UK and is one of the most beautiful castles in the North of England with dramatic architecture and stunning views. The cottages all have their own impressive studded door with characterful door knocker which leads through to the open plan interior. Inside you will find a woodburning stove in each, large windows with views to the keep and castle grounds and feature beams. The cottages share a front open lawned area and two also have access to a rear sloped lawned area which leads down to the castle moat. This area is ideal as you are only a short walk from the local pubs and shops and of course you have the castle to explore where you can enjoy afternoon tea, guided tours and fine dining. Within walking distance there are squash courts which the cottage owners can provide access to and a heated swimming pool. For the keen fisherman, Appleby Castle owns the fishing rights on both sides of the River Eden just 150 yards beneath the ford. Appleby Golf Club is 5 minutes’ drive away and has been described as the Sunningdale of the North. Walkers will be in their element as the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks are very close by and offer fantastic opportunities and stunning views. For days out you can also visit Durham Cathedral and Hadrian’s Wall which are lovely points of interest not too far away.

About the location

Penrith 14 miles.

The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the River Eden and is overlooked by the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon. Set at the heart of the lush Eden Valley and steeped in history, this is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England and was originally the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so guests can enjoy the contrasting scenery of these two National Parks, plus numerous walking and cycling opportunities as well as the fantastic leisure centre in the town. Appleby has a wonderful selection of quality independent shops, cafes and delicatessens selling locally produced food and crafts. The picturesque street of Boroughgate, with some interesting old buildings, is at the heart of the town and links the well-preserved Norman Castle with the fine medieval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and still today many of the old steam trains wend their way along this line and over the historic and awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct. Visit Appleby in June and experience the colourful spectacle of the three hundred-year old Horse Fair. With the delightful Ullswater and the magnificent Lake District within easy reach, this is an ideal holiday location.
