• "Advertised as dog-friendly, but not dog-friendly at all."

  The owner told me that I was supposed to keep the dogs in cages while they were in the house just in case they went on the furniture, which is absurd. Also some issues with Wi-Fi going down and water turned off one night and property was not ready when I arrived to check in at 3pm. The owner showed up on the middle Saturday of the stay, knocked on the door and then sat outside watching the house for several hours in case I left the house without the dogs, saying she had seen me on the street earlier without them (!)

• "Unfortunately we only stayed a day and half out of the week we booked."

  Wasn't very clean, there was a used stained dish cloth and no clean ones to use. The bed covers were all creased and crumbled and we'll worn. No toilet brush to clean the toilet, no hand wash either in the bathroom. We could of coped with all of that, if the garden had been next to the cottage. I appreciate it said separated from the house, but it was passed about 3 or 4 other gardens, right up the top, with 3 dogs this was no good for us, having to put leads on them every time, and at night time before bed, to take them up there with no lighting in the garden was very difficult. Sorry but we couldn't have stood a whole week of not being able to just open a door and let the dogs out.

  I apologise for the bed linen being crumpled. This was because we were having new carpets fitted the week before you came- I did email to let you know this was going on- and the toys from the hall cupboard had been put on the bed while they were fitted. The spare dishcloths were in the washhouse outside where the washing machine is, I apologise that you did not find them. We do not have a toilet brush in the cottage after reading advice that they are very unsanitary. I have just read feedback from another guest who said ‘this was the cleanest property we have stayed in so far’. I’m sorry that the garden did not suit you. It does say clearly that the garden is separate from the cottage. This is because the cottages each have part of what was a walled garden for the castle. We have had many cards and letters from people who love staying at the cottage, I’m sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and the cottage was not to your liking. Property Owner

• "The cottage was small, but well equipped."

  Lovely garden area up some steep steps. Centrally located, close to pubs and shops with some fantastic walks from the doorstep. A stair gate would be helpful to keep dogs downstairs, we used the fireguard for this. We found a dirty sock under the chair in the bedroom, so maybe more attention when cleaning, however the rest of the cottage was clean and tidy. The mattress was very soft on the double bed. I would recommend this cottage for a couple or a family with one child. A mirror close to a socket would also be a helpful addition.

• "The house is delightful."

  Clean and tidy. It makes a great base for investigating the surround area, the lakes. Loved the river walk and was delighted to see red squirrels. Beds are comfy and warm. The large bath was great after a day walking. We would like to see a stair gate as we had to block the stairs with rucksacks to stop the dogs running up them. The gardens are beautiful and make a lovely place to sit in the evening. Kitchen is well equipped. The welcome cake, tea and biscuits were a bonus after a long journey.

• "Cottage was beautiful and really well equipped."

  Lots of locally sourced furnishings gave it a real homely feel. Very convenient for Appleby and shopping etc. Fantastic walks and amazing scenery,some with in walking distance of the cottage. Lovely garden although only accessible via a path and a steep set of steps. Summer house a nice spot to chill out in Only downside for us with 3 dogs was the rear access for the terrace was right by our back door so set the dogs off every time someone used it. The residents seemed to use it instead of their front doors so it was pretty busy from about 5.30 am in the morning. We were very aware this could cause a disturbance to residents and other users. Also the owner requests no dogs upstairs but there is no door/ gate on the stairs so worth taking a barrier yourself( we used the laundry airer) to block off the stairs. Would definitely visit again but without the dogs.

• "Loved this sweet little cottage so much from our stay last year that we have booked again this year."

  .Very cosy and quick to warm with an extremely comfortable bed. Well equipped kitchen and furnished well throughout. Located extremely close to the centre of Appleby which is handy for popping out to grab lunch for a day out or for a takeaway on returning Would highly recommend Shepard’s rest. Extremely well priced and looking forward to returning later this year.. Thank you so much for our lovely and comfortable stay Lindsay & Shaun

• "Really enjoyed our break at the cottage."

  It is ideally situated in the town yet remains very quiet. We took our dogs and luckily within a couple of minutes walk there is a lovely river walk and the dogs loved running round the enclosed garden. The location was ideal for us as located near The Lake District, Northern Pennines and North Yorkshire’s mountains with superb views. The cottage is comfy and the kitchen equipped with most things we needed and the welcome flowers, cake and biscuits where much appreciated. We would definitely think of returning

• "Shepherd’s Rest is a lovely ,comfortable ,well equipped cottage, just a few minutes from the town centre and the good food shops ."

  It had all we needed for a weeks break with our little dog, and it was nice to see locally made furnishings in keeping with the area . The owner Andrea left a generous welcome pack so we were able to settle in quickly and have a cuppa on our arrival. The little summerhouse in the garden was perfect for sitting out in the evening with a glass of wine and letting our dog have a final leg stretch. Appleby is well placed for both the Dales and the Lakes , with so many interesting towns and villages and great walks from the doorstep, a greater place to stay.

• "Had a wonderful stay at Shepherds Rest, with a greatly received basket of goodies on arrival!"

  The WiFi was fast and perfect for working while I was there. The house was cosy and comfortable, all the appliances worked great. Bonus was a lovely little garden to enjoy the sunshine. There were works going on outside across the road quite early, which could wake lighter sleepers, but this was at no fault of the cottage. Thanks for a great stay :)

• "This is a lovely cottage in the very lovely market town of Appleby."

  Parking is easy, the cottage was clean and warm with a good kitchen and good set of pans etc. It's a 3 minute walk from a great set of shops and pubs, and 10 minutes from the train station. The only downside is that the cottage is well-stocked but over-furnished, with a sofa and large armchair, an awkwardly-sized oval table and too many cushions in a small living space. This is a shame as it makes the downstairs of the cottage feel more cramped than it actually is.

• "Lovely cosy cottage - beautifully furnished and well equipped with a nice garden with summerhouse, coffee table and bench."

  The dogs absolutely loved the garden. Parking close by no problem with disc/permit system. Conveniently situated for easy access to all amenities in the very friendly town of Appleby and within easy driving distance of the North Pennines, Western Dales and the Lake District. Fabulous rail service on the Settle - Carlisle line too. Thank you for a great week.

• "Cottage smaller than expected, despite saying allowing 2 dogs."

  2 dogs would relate to small dogs, we had labs!! The upstairs was better in brightness of decor than downstairs. The property was cramped, too much furniture & way too many ornaments which only added to a heavy darkened atmosphere. The settee was the most uncomfortable piece of furniture we've sat on!! The double bed was the softest we've slept in, could only liken it to a water bed!!! Despite this the cottage has potential providing the interior is bright /minimalistic & the kitchen isn't wooden. On a positive note the cottage is only a short walk to local amenities & the castle ( which was closed when we were there ).

• "Delighted with the cottage."

  Beautifully appointed and comfortable, definitely had a lot of effort put in making such a home from home. Loved the welcome tray (unmolested apart from the milk, as dieting), a wonderfully thoughtful gesture and so nice to have a cuppa without having to unload the car after a six hour drive. Have never stayed in Appleby previously but a pleasant little town. It would be nice to have some recommendations of places to eat of an evening (I was on holiday and used the kettle and toaster). The only addition I would like to see added to the equipment would be a bread knife (although managed to hack through the loaf with one of the kitchen knives, but a bit of a rough slice). Thank you for a great stay (despite the weather), look forward to returning.

• "Just to say myself, my friend and our three dogs have just had a weeks stay at the shepherd rest."

  This is a hidden gem. We had such a lovely stay it is so cozy and quiet and has everything you need in shepherds rest to make it a perfect stay. The parking works out very good with the car disc of three hours stay in restriction hours. So we had no trouble at all were out at 11 each day and back by three in afternoon. So then could park the car till the next day at 11. The cottage is ideally located in Appleby. We were able to go to walk to the local butchers which does a amazing joint of beef. Then use local fruit and veg shop, bakery and use the other butchers who sell amazing pies. The tourist information is only a short walk from shepherds rest. We were able to get information on lovely walks which were a short drive from Appleby. It was lovely as only was driving a short distance from Appleby. We went to village of Bolton and visited local church in Bolton to complete a lovely walk 6 mile walk round the area. Completed a 5 mile walk from Dufton. Walked the Eden viaduct 3 mile walk in Kirby Stephen. Plus we did two days not using the car as was lovely walks starting from Appleby. To finish this all off there is a lovely fish and chip in Appleby plus lovely pubs. Thanks again Andrea we felt at home at Shepherds Rest still so much to see. We will be booking again for April or May 2022. This is a lovely place to stay I would really stay it is a lovely place to stay. Miss N Holyoak

• "We've just returned from a week's stay at the beautifully quaint Shepherds Rest."

  Fresh cut flowers, milk, biscuits, tea, & ground coffee were provided which was a lovely touch and the cottage was perfectly clean when we arrived. The kitchen was well equipped and more than ample for our stay. Parking restrictions are in force 8am - 6pm, but you get 3 hours free with the disc provided, no return within 2 hours. Effectively that meant as long as we were out between 11am - 3pm we could park just outside the cottage without issue. There was also a limited number of first-come- first-serve permits provided that allowed parking for the full day, however we found the disc was sufficient for us and we didn't need to use these permits. The double bed is a box sprung bed frame which combined with the sprung mattress led to a much softer experience than our personal preference. Village shops are only a short walk away, the butchers and delicatessens stock fantastic local produce. The local pubs and restaurants we visited were all warm and welcoming but would recommend booking a table in advance for the restaurants.

• "We have just returned from a weeks holiday at shepherds rest and it certainly was so relaxing."

  The garden was such a bonus for the dogs too. Peaceful, quiet and such lovely neighbours that made us so welcome. We visited all sorts of places, did the train to settle, grassmere, Keswick, lots of shopping, meals out and meals in. It was like stepping back in time and the early morning walk with the dogs down by the water, beautiful sky made us want to stay. We would all like to thank you Andrea for making our holiday in your cottage so lovely and well overdue for us. pam, Josie and furry people.!!

• "Pros 1. Nice garden and lovely neighbours 2."

  Useful outhouse and rear access 3. Liked Appleby, very quiet 4. Easy to park even though no private parking so not an issue. Cons 1. The property wasn’t very clean on arrival, so much hair from dogs, we stay at property’s regularly that are dog friendly and it wasn’t very pleasant and the upstairs smelt bad, carpets may need proper clean or replacing. 2. The double bed was so old and squeaky it wasn’t fit for purpose so my partner had to sleep in the other bedroom for the duration of the trip so we could sleep. 3. Blue bin bags needed for rubbish and none left, when asked the host said she didn’t have any and told us to leave a note with the bin men or store two weeks of rubbish at the property.. 4. Very small fridge with a broken freezer section so was very hard to store food properly, a second fridge would easily fit in the outhouse and a freezer very useful for ice packs. 5. No cupboard space, lots of China ornaments but lack of useful items such as Collinder and very small pans made cooking very difficult, we ended up buying a bigger pot for the trip. We did enjoy our holiday but Unfortunately cons outweighed pros so probably wouldn’t rebook at this property.

  Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. The hair€™ on the carpets upstairs is the fibre that the carpets are made from- locally sourced Herdwick wool. I am aware that when vacuuming at the moment lots of wool comes off these new carpets. We felt it was important to source our furnishings locally so I am sorry if you are unused to wool carpets like this. We have recently bought the cottage and have ordered a new kitchen which will be fitted over the winter. I noticed that you had managed to find the blue bags before you left. We rely on the previous guests leaving them in an obvious place for the next guests- but as I said I was happy to remove your rubbish for you after your stay. • "Wonderful holiday at this pleasing cottage in Appleby."

  Loved the photos of sheep, woven throws and sheep cushions- very comfortable, although the mattress on the bed was a bit too soft. No other complaints as we had everything we needed in a wonderful location. Our dog was very happy at the cottage too. He had a cosy corner, access to the garden, local river walks, in addition to lots of other dog friendly destinations in the Lake District - a perfect place for dogs and humans! He did not want to leave! We were sorry to too. We had refreshments waiting for us on our arrival and a permit for local parking - very helpful and much appreciated. The Lakes are truly stunning. Appleby has some good places to eat- The Royal Oak is great for food and we also enjoyed the Crown and Cushion- both dog friendly. We went on the Ullswater Steamers and The Haverthwaite and Lakeside Railway, we also visited Brantwood, The Lakeland Motor Museum and Lowther Castle. Fantastic holiday with brilliant weather and a cosy stay at The Shepherd's Rest, a well loved cottage perfectly furnished by Andrea, a shepherdess and author. Her books are in the cottage. • "Just returned from a lovely week, weather was fantastic."

  The cottage in a prime location but not much in the way of cupboard space in the kichen as were full of pots/mugs/cups. The Garden not being attached to the cottage was a slight problem with our 2 dogs, when we arrived the neighbours dog, not on a lead, went for our cavalier.
