Settle down for the evening and climb the stairs to the first floor where you'll find the snug sitting room, enticing you to put your feet up and unwind in front of your favourite film on the television, warming your toes with the glow of the woodburning stove in the cooler months.

As the evening draws to a close, prepare for bed with a luxurious soak amongst the bubbles in the tub, or opt for a quick rinse by making use of the overhead shower, before heading to the second floor to rest your head in either of the two well-presented bedrooms, with the choice between a double and an intimate single.

A short walk from your doorstep will bring you into the centre of the unspoilt village of Armathwaite where you'll find all your local amenities; indulge in a spot of pub grub at the family-run Dukes Head Inn, reward yourself with a refreshing pint of cask ale at the Fox & Pheasant Inn, or head to Eden Stores to pick up some treats to enjoy from the comfort of your holiday home.

A short train journey will take you to the vibrant border city of Carlisle, steeped in history and home to the imposing 12th century fortress of Carlisle Castle, Cumbria's Museum of Military Life and the striking architecture of Carlisle Cathedral.

Treat yourself to a spot of retail therapy with a visit to The Lanes Shopping Centre, test your swing at Stony Holme Golf Club, or if you time it right, catch a game of live sport at Carlisle United FC.

No trip to Cumbria would be complete without a visit to the Lake District National Park, where you can explore the varying terrains and landscapes including the world-renowned Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England, and the rolling peaks of Skiddaw, Helvellyn and Scaffell Pike, promising a challenging hike for the avid outdoor adventurer.

About the location

ARMATHWAITE

Penrith 11 miles.

The attractive, unspoilt rural village of Armathwaite is ideally placed for exploring the Lake District, Eden Valley and the lovely coastline of the Solway Firth. The village has two old pubs, both with popular restaurants serving excellent food, a village Post Office and a traditional village shop. The River Eden runs through the centre of the village, and the area is renowned for its excellent salmon fishing, plus walking, canoeing and climbing. Armathwaite Castle, by the river, is a four-storey Pele Tower, and the 15th Century Church has fine examples of stained glass windows. The Eden Gorge, between Lazonby and Armathwaite, is one of Cumbria's best-kept secrets, and is well worth exploring. The local railway station is a stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway, which is one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Britain, and where today many old steam trains still wend their way through some of the finest countryside in Britain. The Rheged Discovery Centre in Penrith is the "largest grass covered building in the country" or you might like to visit Dalemain Historic House, featured in a television production of Jane Eyre.
