  • "Simply Perfect, the cottage was spotlessly clean had everything you wanted to make a very comfortable break."

We booked somewhere remote to avoid the fireworks and it worked, our little dog had (and ourselves), had a totally relaxing break.

  • "My husband and I booked a holiday here for much-needed rest and relaxation."

We stayed for a fortnight in this lovely lodge. Although it is dog-friendly, it is spotlessly clean and beautifully presented, with all necessary facilities. From the cosy sitting room, we enjoyed watching the sweeping far views of the fells and pennines, which change every day. We also used the lodge as a comfortable base to explore both the Lakes and the Dales and did quite a bit of leisurely walking. Visiting Aysgarth Falls in full spate after rain will stay with me for ever. The owner is very friendly, helpful and responds quickly to any queries, but is happy to leave you to enjoy your stay. I couldn't fault this booking and would definitely return.

  • "This was the first place we have stayed with our dog, he is a mastiff so quite large, the retreat is such a beautiful little place, extremely comfortable, clean and modern."

Lorraine went above and beyond to make us welcome, even leaving a lovely blanket and towel for our boy, as well as some amazing welcoming gifts. The retreat is very cozy, has fantastic views, especially wonderful to wake up to in a morning, plenty of space for our dog to run and roam, even the farm owners were extremely welcoming. As we were only staying for 4 days, we didn’t get to do as much as we would have liked (uncooperative weather), so we will definitely be returning. A beautiful gem of a place

  • "We had a very lovely week’s holiday in this beautifully decorated, well-equipped and immaculate lodge."

The outside photos don’t do it enough justice as it has great views of the area and stunning sunsets at night. Lorraine, the owner, has gone above and beyond to make a stay here for everyone very homely and comfortable - from the soft beds, pillows and dog blanket to the welcome tray of treats with milk, bread and wine. It is in a very quiet location but easily accessible to all the main lake attractions. We stayed during August but could imagine it being very cosy during Winter months too. Thank you Lorraine for all the thought through and thoughtful touches. Would highly recommend!

  • "The lodge is wonderful, we stayed for a fortnight and had a lovely time."

Very peaceful and comfortable with great views out the bi-fold doors in the living room. We would often sit out on the patio and enjoy the changing sky, majestic! This place is really home from home, from the comfy beds, large soft towels and fully kitted-out kitchen. It's a good sized space for a small family. 10 mins in the car to Kendal and not far to Windermere, it's location is remote but close to everything you'd need. We would fully recommend a stay here as it's one of a favourites now, and we'll be returning next year for sure!

  • "Howgills Retreat was utterly amazing!"

The lengths the owner had gone to just to add touches of comfort, homeliness and welcome were delightful and we really felt wanted from the moment we pulled up at the property. Everything was clean, fresh, attractive, modern and spacious. The views were exceptional and the utter tranquility was a dream. We enjoyed the calves, cows poking their heads over the wall, sheep and the bird life. Good access to the lakes and across to Yorkshire. We didn’t want to leave!

Lovely little personal touches. Lorraine the host has thought of everything. Bonus that we were able to use the field next door to walk/run our dog, she loved it. Would 100% recommend to anyone.

The views all around are outstanding and the lodge inside is finished to a very high standard. The lodge is clearly well loved and maintained by the owner, it’s very clean and finished off with lots of lovely furnishings. Lorraine is a fantastic host who also left our young daughter some Easter treats, as well as proving some basic supplies which was appreciated. I have already recommended this location to friends & family.

A really nice tranquil place to unwind. The facilities are great, comfy beds. I had to google the wood burner to see if I could get one the same for my house. I would have liked to visit the Stud that the owners have, as I am a very horsey person, but will maybe arrange riding next time we go. Very homely would recommend anytime. 10/10 just great, thank you Lorraine.

Everything was immaculate and well thought out, the location was perfect for us. Lorraine left a lovely welcome card and goodies which was very kind. A full size dishwasher was great to have, and the little touches like dishwasher tablets, foil etc. being available was definitely a big plus for us as you don’t always get these useful things where you stay that you sometimes forget to bring with you. The view was insane from the lodge, and the sunsets were incredible. Our daughter made great friends with the neighbouring family who live there too. We would definitely return and would recommend in a heartbeat!

  • "We all could not have been happier with Howgills Retreat, we planned to just use it as a base to travel into the Lake District every day but we found ourselves wanting to spend more and more time relaxing at the lodge."

It was impeccably clean, quite modern while having tons of character, has a lovely view (sunsets were breathtaking), has a very well specced kitchen, well-decorated living space, great clean bathroom, large comfortable bedrooms, nice patio area... I could go on. It honestly felt like our little home, none of us wanted to leave. Before we arrived I managed to get myself lost (whilst actually only being 1 minute around the corner), so I called the owner and she was lovely and patient as I fumbled with a map trying to describe where I was. They had left us some treats and a nice letter welcoming us all, including the dog which was a nice touch! Speaking of the dog, he loved it. There is a grass field next to the lodge, there were some fence posts up without any wire so I'm not sure if this will always be accessible but he loved exploring that area. You have to be comfortable driving on some smaller lanes to access the property (nothing bad) and it's next to a working farm so you will be neighbours to sheep and horses etc, we loved this. I can't remember the last time I felt as relaxed. Thanks for the incredible stay, we will be back, hopefully this winter to cosy up by the fireplace.

About the location

KIRKBY LONSDALE

Kendal 9 miles.

An attractive market town, Kirkby Lonsdale is situated in the heart of the Lune Valley, midway between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and holds a 13th century Market Charter. Nowadays, Thursday is market day, a perfect opportunity for visitors to explore the variety of distinctive independent shops in the town, or the many 17th and 18th century buildings which still stand. The town was also a finalist for the High Street of the Year Award in 2016. This part of the Lune Valley was a favourite haunt of the artist Turner, and was made famous by Ruskin – his "view" of the valley is still spectacular. The medieval Devil’s Bridge spans the river, and the quiet country lanes are ideal for exploring by car, bike, or even horse. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, fishing and a variety of riverside and country walks, making the area an ideal location for a break, whatever time of year. When voting Kirkby Lonsdale as the ‘Best Place to Live in The North West’ in 2019, The Sunday Times commented it is “An unbeatable Lake District location, bags of community spirit and one of the cleanest high streets in the country".
