  • "Absolutely fantastic house in an amazing setting."

    Would highly recommend to anyone.

  • "Cottage is beautiful and spacious, hostess is helpful and friendly."

Loved stargazing at night in the hot tub.

  • "A fantastic place to stay."

The building is beautiful and spacious. We made use of the BBQ pit outside but the hot tub was the highlight. Only minor point is that there is a large house just out of shot of most of the photos and there was the occasional car going over the cattle grid outside. But this is just a nitpick as everything else was so stunning we really didn't care. The owner was lovely and helpful, taking the time to show us how everything worked.

  • "We had a fabulous long weekend for our friends birthday."

Mungeon Barn is so beautiful and so are the surroundings. Kath & John were the perfect hosts, the beds were comfortable and the decor and finish of the furnishings were superb. We will definitely be recommending the Barn to our friends and hope to be back in the future soon.

  • "The barn was fabulous."

Our host was really lovely, and the facilities were five star. Our only minor complaint was that the hot tub wasn’t warm enough to use on our first night!

  • "Beautiful property with so much to do in your finger tips."

The most stocked kitchen in terms of pots/pans/glassware/utensils etc that we have ever had.

  • "Great place to stay, absolutely beautiful surroundings, the owners were very friendly and extremely helpful."

Only downside I would say is the beds were quite firm and the pillows on the bed were very uncomfortable, far too large and firm. Other than that everything else was perfect.

  • "Great Venue, great hospitality."

We really enjoyed our time there and I can only recommend the place to anyone who would like to visit. Only issue would be the over-complicated microwave which we couldn’t even get to work.

  • "Absolutely gorgeous cottage, all the mod cons including hot tub."

Location was tranquil and peaceful close enough to lots of attractions including Windermere, Aquarium, Golf courses and Safari Zoo (very good for a British zoo). Kath the owner extremely helpful.

  • "The Barn itself was fantastic, 5 star accommodation, and the surroundings and owners made the whole package."

The couple were very pleasant and informed us of the history of both business and farm. The bulls were our amusing neighbours for the week. Again, a fantastic holiday and the hot tub was a huge bonus for those lazy evenings spent in the barn.

The property

Backbarrow 1.5 miles.

A magnificent detached stone cottage with a hot tub, situated within 400 acres on the owner’s working livestock farm, near the villages of Backbarrow, Newby Bridge and Cartmel.

Located in spectacular countryside, Mungeon Barn is an excellent base for exploring the southern corner of the Lake District, with the ancient priory town of Cartmel just three miles away.

This splendid cottage provides luxurious accommodation, perfect for a family get-together or for guests wishing to escape for a relaxing break.

Built in an upside down style to take into account the stunning views, the open plan living area is on the first floor with a vaulted ceiling, oak beams and an exposed stone wall.

The modern designer kitchen offers everything that you could wish for, whilst the dining table can comfortably sit everyone in the party.

The other end of the living area is taken up with comfortable sofas, a woodburning stove that is guaranteed to keep you warm whatever the weather, a galleried window with exposed stone walling and steps down into the den.

All of the bedrooms are located on the ground floor, with a beautiful master bedroom with an en-suite shower room, a step up to two further king-size double rooms, one with an external stable door leading to the patio and the other with a stable door leading to the front of the cottage, a twin room with stable door, a family bathroom and a shower room.

Outside there is a large slate patio area, designed to maximise the beautiful views, with a built-in barbeque and a sumptuous hot tub where you can while away the evening with a glass of something refreshing as you watch the sun go down.

Mungeon Barn is situated on a working farm where the resident Belted Galloway cattle blend easily into the landscape, whilst the only other distraction might be a hare, deer or pheasant strutting by.

For the anglers in the party, there is a private lake stocked with Rainbow Trout, where if you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the otter and her young, depending on the time of the year.

Just three miles away is the popular village of Cartmel with the smallest racecourse in the country and a superb mix of quirky shops, pubs, and of course the famous Michelin starred L’Enclume restaurant.

This fabulous cottage is a gem.

The small village of Backbarrow sits by the banks of the River Leven and the southern tip of Lake Windermere. The famous Haverthwaite Steam Railway runs close by the village between Haverthwaite and Lakeside. Enjoy magnificent views across Windermere and the surrounding fells, or visit the Aquarium of the Lakes, where the naturally themed habitats bring the history of the Lakes vividly to life. Bowness-on-Windermere provides a lovely day out, and the picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Set amidst the charm of the Lake District, close to the fringe of Windermere, this attractive village makes an inspiring choice from which to forage further into a magical heartland of silver lakes, lofty towering peaks and lonely gorse clad moors.
