  • "We found the Coach House to be great for our needs."

It is very unique and the description and photos give a true representation. The location was perfect with easy walking distance to train station and the town. There were plenty of eating and drinking establishments within easy walking distance. The owner was helpful and gave us a quick tour round the house on arrival. The owner struck a good balance between giving us our space but being approachable and available. We especially liked the off road parking having had our car damaged with road side parking at a different property.

Thanks for your great review Kate. Southport has a super choice of hospitality venues and being able to walk to them from the Coach House is perfect for our guests. The train service from Southport is good value and frequent so is also a great option for visiting the wider area. Hope to see you again. Property Owner

  • "This was booked as a last minute replacement when our booking (through different company, not Sykes) for another property in Southport was cancelled just over a week before we arrived."

We had looked at this property when planning our trip but originally rejected it due to the spiral staircase which we though might cause us problems, in the event we managed it OK, but it was a bit difficult for my partner to climb and descend. When we arrived we were met by the owner who showed us around and came out with some rather unexpected requests. We were asked to save electricity by (if possible) only using the dishwasher, washing machine and cooker (!) between 09:00 and 15:00 when the solar panels would be providing power. The freezer was turned off and we had to ask for it to be turned on. There were also notices left all over the property telling us to do (or not do) this and that, not very welcoming. We were asked not to lift the blinds of the rooms as they caught on the window catches (due to being fitted badly), but the whole place felt dusty and airless so we needed to lift them just to get some air into it, it would also have been nice to be able to look outside during daylight hours! We were told (and there was a notice!) not to try and adjust the heating as it was controlled from the owners property. I felt it humiliating to return to the property after an evening visiting friends in town to have to call him and ask if we could possibly have some heating as it was cold inside. The parking was exceedingly tight to enter and exit, fortunately my (average sized Honda) is equipped with parking sensors and a rear camera, otherwise we would probably have had to leave it on the street outside and carry our luggage a considerable distance to the property, which is located at the bottom of the owners garden. The main bedroom (downstairs) has a large window, but the glass is frosted so you couldn't actually see into the garden from it! There were also no opening windows to it, just some tiny vents. The upstairs bedroom was small and cramped. The place certainly has character, but it was a bit weird to be cooking and eating in what had been carefully preserved as the original stables. Fortunately, most days we were eating out with our friends, either on trips out during the day, or in the evening at their house. Overall, not a great second week to our holiday, particularly compared to the lovely house in North Wales that we had stayed in for the first week.

I'm very sorry to hear that the Coach House did not meet your requirements and that you did not reach out to us with any issues during your stay. As you're aware we are close to hand and would have been happy to help where possible. We have photos and a clear description of the spiral staircase on the website so that guests can assess if they will have difficulty using it as your partner did. I like to greet guests on arrival and my quick tour of the features of the Coachhouse is well received by guests as a shortcut to getting to know the property and you can see from our other reviews guests appreciate this. We are lucky enough to have a separate fridge and freezer in the kitchen and switch the fridge on prior to guests arrival. As a lot of guests do not have frozen goods upon arrival or need to use the freezer during their stay I mention that it is off and to switch it on if needed. Guests that care about the environment appreciate this. I did not ask you to save electricity at any point, there is a sign on the dishwasher and the washing machine explaining that we have had solar panels fitted and to use those appliances between 9am - 3pm if you wish to take advantage of using that clean green energy. An increasing number of our guests like to be eco responsible so we supply them with the information to be able to do that. I highlighted that to open and close the blinds you use the rod not the string as guests maybe unfamiliar with that style of blind. I let you know that the heating is automatic, it is a state of the art system that monitors the temperature and brings on the radiators as needed. It is set at what we have found to be the average level based on most guests but if you want it warmer or colder to just let me know and I can adjust it via an app. You contacted me on the Saturday evening and I increased the temperature and you were happy with the heating for the rest of the week. The driveway width to the Coachhouse is the same as the majority of drives and we have had vans and large cars park there no problem, you do have to reverse in or out but that has not been an issue for other guests. I think having privacy glass in a floor to ceiling bedroom window is not unusual and is the sensible choice. The downstairs bedroom is the bigger one and we have put a double and a single bed in that room, upstairs we have two single beds all of which can be seen on the photos. Guests have consistently praised the Coachhouse for it's "sensitive", "fantastic" conversion while retaining the character of the building, as can be seen in the photos we have blended the old and new into a comfortable modern kitchen. We welcome constructive feedback and will always act, were possible, to improve guests experience. However it is clear from your comments you had already decided the Coachhouse was not suitable for your needs and this has influenced your review. Property Owner

  • "We really enjoyed our stay in Southport at the Coach House!"

The pool table, and access to Disney, Netflix & a wii games console kept our kids entertained throughout our stay. As a family we didnt have any issues with the spiral staircase to get upstairs, with the kids staying in the upper level bedroom while we stayed in the bedroom on the groond floor. The kitchen was well equipped, including a slow cooker which we used quite a few times while we were out and about. Parking was secure behind electric gates, albeit with a fairly tight reverse in. The location was handy for buses and a nearby Lidl. Its a pleasant 25 minute walk to Southport Centre, which we also did a few times when eating out. The gift of a bottle of wine and some easter eggs on arrival was also a nice treat. Overall its a really fantastic space, and if we ever visit Southport again we will be staying here!

Thanks for the great review Peter. So glad you enjoyed your stay and that the pool table, streaming services and games console kept the family entertained even if the weather was not great. Hope to see you again. Property Owner

Very uncomfortable beds & sofas duvet’s & pillows need updating. Dogs nearby barking all night. Layout could be better difficulty getting drinks etc up the spiral stairs lounge would be better on ground floor

I'm very sorry to hear that the Coach House did not meet your expectations or requirements. We pride ourselves on providing a first class experience for our guests and were disappointed to read your feedback given that you did not reach out to us with any issues during your stay. As you're aware we are close to hand and would have been happy to help where possible. As you can see from our previous reviews guests usually report a very comfortable stay and this is not something that has presented itself before, but we will of course monitor any comments made and make updates as required. The property boasts a beautiful and quirky spiral staircase, which can be seen in the images before you make your booking and we have never had guests complain about the layout before, but there is a dining area on the ground level to avoid the problem of taking food and drink upstairs. Thanks for saying everything was great, we try our best. We investigated the hot water when the shower was on and found it did go colder, so we have installed a brand new top of the range boiler. Property Owner

About the location

SOUTHPORT

Ainsdale 4 miles; Ormskirk 8 miles; Formby 8.5 miles.

Southport, along with its neighbour Ainsdale, lies on the coastline where the Irish Sea meets North West England. The town was founded in 1792 when an innkeeper, William Sutton, built a bathing house at what is now the south end of Lord Street, the main road running through the town. The town was small and not very widely populated until the turn of 19th century, when it became popular with tourists due to the easy access it provided to Leeds and Liverpool Canal. It quickly expanded and now boasts the second longest pleasure pier in the British Isles, the Southport Pier Tramway and Lord Street, an elegant, tree-lined shopping destination. From Birkdale to Woodvale, sand dunes stretch along the coastline and in Ainsdale in particular, the dunes have now been listed as a National Nature Reserve and a designated Ramsar site. The coastline stretches for 22 miles, with plenty of beaches to be discovered, making this classic seaside resort the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are scenic parks and gardens to explore, fabulous shopping opportunities, an exciting nightlife, as well as a mouth-watering array of restaurants and traditional seaside amusements. Stroll down the UK’s oldest iron pier and try the old penny slot machines in the Pavilion, or ride traditional carousels at Silcock’s Funland. Family attractions include Splash World, Martin Mere and Farmer Ted’s, while The Atkinson, an £18 million arts venue, is set in a Grade II listed building hosting a variety of visual and performing arts events. Southport’s extensive events programme includes the World Musical Fireworks Championships, the Southport Food and Drink Festival, Southport Air Show, Southport Flower Show and the Southport Jazz Festival. It is part of England’s Golf Coast and is home to seven championship courses, including Royal Birkdale, which hosted The Open Championship in 2008. In a great spot for a beach break, there really is something for everyone!
