  • "We holiday in bowness every February half term and this was our first stay at the thistles, we found it to be a real home away from home - very homely feeling and has everything you could possibly want from your stay - it’s was decorated and maintained to a very high standard, it is immaculate and super comfy."

I would advise anyone thinking of booking a stay in bowness to seriously consider the thistles as you won’t be disappointed - Thankyou for a lovely stay we will definitely be back soon.

Thank you so very much for the wonderful feedback it is great to receive and its good to know that all our work to present The Thistles ‘just so’, as we would personally want to find it, is appreciated. It definitely doesn’t feel like a typical holiday-let because it was our personal holiday home, so it does have a lovely feel to it. Thank you for being such respectful guests…we would welcome you back :) Our best to you and your family Property Owner

  • "Lovely location very convenient for walking and close to shops and resteraunts, it was very quiet both during the day and on a night , lovely for a good night sleep."

The parking spot at the back was a great help. The beers snd chocolate were a much appreciated supprise. House is furnished very nicley, looks lovely the lounge area is stylish but not particularly comfortable for a group of adults. The kitchen is very small although well stocked with all the essentials we found it difficult to prepare much in there, didn't bother us too much as we ate out a lot. The cellar area was rather damp and the ironing board had black mould marks on it as it is kept in there, again didn't bother us as we didn't use it but think it would be better kept elsewhere. One if the reasons we booked this property was because we like 2 bathrooms, however the top floor bathroom shower is realy of no use due to low ceilings and no shower screen/curtain. Towels were very small for adults to use and smelt rather damp so we had to wash them before use and with no tumble dryer available this proved to be a problem drying them.

Thank you for your feedback. We are responsive property owners and aim with Sykes to give the best holiday experience. We had exchanged messages on your arrival day and I wish you had again so your issues with the towels could have been resolved straight away. If we are not told, we can do little after the event. I am sorry the the size of rooms and the furnishing in the lounge, you felt were inadequate. The Thistles is a traditional Patterson build terraced cottage so some rooms are appropriately small. The Sykes photos do show the size of the rooms well, and how the lounge is furnished. Also the photo of the upstairs bathroom shows a bath with a sloped ceiling. The information equally says the house has 2 bathrooms, 1 with a bath and 1 with a shower. The photos are there as a guide for people when considering booking a property. The towels are standard sized bath towels not bath sheets. So for some guests this may not suit. My housekeeper and I work hard to present the house beautifully and we have a high standard of cleanliness. We will most definitely check all the linens for any damp smells. The cellar is just that, a cellar for storage and to house an extra fridge freezer and washing machine. (We are listed as not having a tumble dryer) Having had several torrential storms the cellar may have appeared damp to you. I can assure you the ironing board cover is freshly clean, just marked, not unsightly. The outdoor cushion pads that are stored down there have no moisture on them nor damp marks. I have checked the carpet rug in the cellar and there is no dampness or moisture. It is unfortunate that The Thistles did not suit you. If you had got in touch and raised issues with us we would have been pleased to help you. I hope you find a more suitable property for you and your family on your next holiday. Property Owner

We slept really well. Private parking at the rear is a huge bonus as it does get busy at the front of the property on the main road. Nice seating area on the rear patio when the sun does decide to show itself! Will definitely be back! A mirror downstairs, perhaps in the hallway would be useful.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this very comfortable, nicely decorated house."

There were 6 adults in our party but the house was plenty big enough not to be on top of each other. All the bedrooms, living and dining rooms were very spacious. The location is great. Just a short walk to the high street, which has plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants. The house itself was very clean and tidy with a few nice extra touches, such as reading books and board games. The complimentary local chocolate and a couple of bottles of local beer were very welcome too. We also managed to squeeze two cars in to the parking space, which was very convenient as it would have been difficult to find nearby street parking. There were a few small niggles though. The kitchen was very small and felt crowded with more than one person in it. The microwave being in the cellar was a little inconvenient also. A few more bath towels would have been appreciated too. Also, the shower cubicle was quite small and leaked water through the door seals. Overall though, a very nice accommodation that I would happily use again.

  • "We had a really lovely week at the Thistles, the house is welcoming and warm, the owners have provided very comfortable beds and bedding so a good nights sleep is assured."

The Thistles is very well situated for walks to Bo’ness and Windermere and is also very close to a frequent bus route to many places around the area, we made good use of the 599 bus (instead of using the car) which took us to Ambleside, Rydal and Grasmere. The parking slot around the back was very much appreciated as Craig Walk is busy most of the day, however there seems to be more parking along Beresford Road which is only a short walk away. All in all we had a great week and the owners very accommodating to a couple of requests. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback and such lovely comments too, it was an absolute pleasure to have such nice and respectful guests stay :) Our very best to you and your family Property Owner

Some lovely touches by the owner before our arrival and even my fussy 21 y/o was impressed with my choice! It was a one off with my family to celebrate my big birthday in a beautiful destination where my husband and I could walk out in a morning on local walks or to the shops and then go out with the boys later on. I would recommend The Thistles to anyone looking for a break with their family!

Thank you for taking the time to leave such positive feedback and we are pleased to know you enjoyed celebrating your birthday at our cottage. We know ourselves how difficult it is too impress our adult children so we are thrilled it "passed" the test :) You have summed up the beauty of the location of The Thistles; with so many great walks to do from our door and then to be minutes from the shops, restaurants and pubs...it is a gem. Only one thing let it down the water pressure or lack of it .We could not use the bath in the upper floor as there was no water coming through and the shower on the main floor was a very poor power. The toliet to an age to fill up too there were only two of us and there was not a problem but if our whole family was there I dare say the water pressure would cause some inconvenience. (Pump needed ). As walkers we like to soak our old weary bones after a day of exploring but this was not to be . In all a lovely stay in a lovely home .

Thank you so much for your feedback. I can now only apologise to you for the issues you experienced with the water pressure in the house, we were unaware of the problem. We are responsive to any issues raised by our guests and so wish you had reached out to us: we value the fact that you chose The Thistles for your holiday and want you to have the house as we ourselves would expect to find it and enjoy a trouble free holiday. The house is beautiful and much more spacious than it looks on the photos. Absolute top marks for cleanliness, comfort and location. Very well equipped and lovely touches throughout. The parking space is a Godsend and really easy to get in and out of even for my large car. We didn't have to contact the owners during our stay as everything was fine but we did communicate before we went and again when we got home and they were extremely helpful and friendly. They have also gone to a lot of trouble with the local information they have left for guests in the house. Thank you to them both!! If you are reading this wondering whether or not to book go for it. You won't be disappointed.

The place is just walking distance to the center of Bowness Town. The house is big to accommodate my whole family of 5. It is immaculately clean and fully furnished. There is a patio at the back of the property - to sit back and relax while sipping a cup of tea. Our train was cancelled so we have to take an earlier train. I emailed that my family is arriving early (did not get a reply from lakes cottage) but the property was ready and we got in (and meet the lovely owner - Ms. Jo). For our return train, again it was cancelled and Ms. Jo helped in searching for a new train schedule. Thank you Ms. Jo for sharing your lovely accommodation. We had a perfect stay at Bowness-on-Windermere. Left some small comments in the dining area.

  • "We absolutely loved our stay at the Thistles."

Some rental cottages are equipped with the cheapest furniture but The Thistles felt like home from home. It’s centrally located and close to everything which was fantastic, and such a bonus to have a parking space (which was easy to get in and out of). Everything was well thought out - there are USB sockets in most rooms which was really helpful, and we loved the book of local walks. The information folder is written in such a friendly tone that I had no doubt any problems would be easily resolved but thankfully we encountered no problems! Everything you need to know about the house, it’s appliances and the local area is included in the information folder so be sure to read it. It was clean and warm, and very comfortable. The kitchen is small but there’s a basement which houses the microwave & washing machine / dryer so it didn’t need to be any bigger. Everything we needed was provided including cling film & tin foil, tea & coffee, cooking oil, sharp knives, cleaning products etc We were only provided with one toilet roll (and there are 2 bathrooms - the top floor didn’t have any) but we had brought our own so we weren’t caught short! We did find one of the doors at the back of the house was very difficult to close. It was the French door closest to the key box so just bear that in mind when you arrive if you open both doors. Overall we had a wonderful stay & wouldn’t hesitate to come back and to recommend it to others.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such positive and well thought out feedback, we really appreciate your words. We are so pleased you enjoyed your time at The Thistles, and yes it has been our "home from home", so I am pleased it felt that way to you. I had no idea how bad that door had become until a few weeks ago but Husband has adjusted both sides and they are much better:oddly the door is never an issue once the weather warms up! Thank you for choosing The Thistles for your family time, it was a pleasure to have you stay. Our best to you and yours :) Property Owner
