Everything you could want is there. We loved it so much we are booking again for next year. When we stayed Ambleside had, had the biggest snowfall for years which made our stay extra magical and very Christmassy.

Wow, thank you for your fabulous feedback! We would love to have you return to the Old Toffee Shop! Property Owner

  • "We had an amazing stay at this cottage Nov '23."

It was perfect for the two of us (brother and sister) with the two bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms which were immaculately clean. Although the overall footprint of the cottage was quite small, the layout really worked well. Kitchen was excellently equipped. The two-sofa layout was particularly good for sprawling out in front of the fire. Nice touches were a cupboard of board games and some gifted local produce (biscuits were delicious). Location was perfect - right in the heart of Ambleside and super easy to get out onto the fells locally, and because it was low season, there was free parking (permit required) in a nearby car park. Plenty of pubs and shops close by for the essentials (beer, hiking gear and food!). There was only one slight niggle that there wasn't a starter pack of logs & firelighters for our first night. It meant after a long drive, our first errand was to go and fetch some logs from the local garage. No biggie, but for us, the log fire is always a must on trips like this and we were looking forward to getting the car unloaded and starting a fire. The plus point, we grabbed a few cheeky pints in the Royal Oak on the way back. All in all, would highly recommend - perhaps it would be a squeeze in the living room/kitchen for 2 x couples but spot on for us.

Spotlessly clean. Only minor issue is car parking but I emphasise minor. Was always possible to get a space on street for the allowed hour and long stay options just a short walk. Would be very happy to stay again and highly recommend.

  • "Beautifully renovated and decorated cottage, and spotlessly clean!"

Great location in the centre of Ambleside but still quiet with nice thick walls. Fantastic bathrooms and wonderful bath for after long walks. Some really useful walking maps were available in the drawer, thank you. We had a really great week, the Old Toffee Shop was a perfect and relaxing base for our holiday and we did most of our walking directly from there so was nice to mostly leave the car parked. No negatives but just a couple small things; there was no cupboard space for food so we put everything on the work surface or in fridge, not a big problem. Recycling bins would be good, there is some info in the folder about the recycling centre but it’s not clear exactly what you can recycle with an ‘etc’ at end of a list. We took our recycling waste back home with us anyway but it’d be good if guests were actively encouraged to recycle. Lastly the parking info was all great, and some additional info about EV charging in the area would be helpful. Big thanks to Jo and the cleaning team for such a lovely stay in the Old Toffee Shop.

Quality of furnishings and kitchen equipment is excellent. We did not encounter any problems with the heating but the weather was mild (+2 to +6 degrees) for the time of year (20th to 27th Feb). While located in the centre of the village the cottage is very quiet en especially the small courtyard at the back is a very nice place to relax. The only (minor) suggestions for improvements are: - more wardrobe space in the bedrooms: the current "antique" storage is not very practical - a wifi amplifier so that there is also a strong signal in the courtyard

  • "We had a great week staying at the Old Toffee Shop."

Comfy beds, great showers, big smart TV for using our own Netflix account on the couple of evenings we stayed in. The property was of a high standard throughout with a well equipped and up to date kitchen. Having rear access to store our bikes security outside at the back was really helpful. Parking was no problem at all, King St car park was literally less than a minute away and we always found a space, not that we used the car much! Quiet location but very close to all the shops, bars, cinema and restaurants. I always take ear plugs on holiday but never used them once! The owners have thought of everything to make a holiday stay comfortable, the cottage was spotless, the welcome pack went down very well as did the good quality toiletries and I honestly can’t think of anything to improve it. Highly recommended and would love to stay here again. If only all holiday accommodation could be like this!

  • "We had a wonderful weeks stay in the Old Toffee Shop."

The cottage is beautifully presented and lived up to our expectations. The location is excellent. We managed to park right outside to unload and then moved our car to local car parks utilising the permit provided. We only struggled to park on a couple of occasions at the end of the week which was the beginning of half term when the car parks were full! The facilities in the cottage were excellent with everything we could need and high quality pots, pans and cutlery etc. There was a good selection of games which was a bonus and the welcome hamper was one of the best we’ve ever received. We could have done with some storage space in the master bedroom en suite as we had to pile our toiletries on the windowsill. This wasn’t a problem but will likely cause damage longer term to paintwork etc. A second permit for guests would also be welcome as the cottage is suited to 4 adults (albeit it would be a bit cramped for a full week) but parking is only provided for one car. There is no storage in the kitchen for food so a spare cupboard would be helpful, and a bath sheet would be good too as the towels were too small to wrap around. Tiny quibbles that wouldn’t stop us returning as overall the cottage was wonderful and we would recommend to all.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments about the cottage. A parking permit is currently £650 annually, which like other goods and services has risen in price dramatically in the last year. We do let guests know that there is only one provided by the cottage prior to booking. We will look into providing additional storage space in the master en-suite. There is some space in the kitchen cupboards for storing food, a little in the sideboard and in the cupboard under the stairs. However, we will have a look if this can be increased further. Please do come back and visit the cottage again. Property Owner

The temperature of both showers was set far too low and we were unable to regulate this to a high enough temperature for both showers. Also, given the time of the year, i.e. early spring, the heating was difficult to regulate to a satisfactory temperature. Aside from this, excellent stay and would recommend to anyone wishing to visit Ambleside and the Lakes

The Cottage exceeded our expectations as a homely place to stay, right in the heart of Ambleside. The owners have fully refurbished fairly recently and everything has been done to a very high standard using quality equipment - not always something you find in a holiday rental. I simply can’t find anything to fault. The location is also excellent for walking out to pubs, restaurants or shops and there are also many good walks you can do from the cottage without taking your car. We certainly would not hesitate to try and book the cottage again when we next visit the lakes. Thank you! Trevor Rees

. The cottage is decorated beautifully and it is very comfy. The information on the parking available was a little confusing and it wasn’t clear if the pass meant we could stay in the car parks for long stay/ duration of our time there. Usually when I have stayed in Sykes Cottages before that have a log burner it is set up for at least one fire on arrival. A little disappointing that there was nothing at the property to use. Also there was only one bag provided in the bin, this easily split and there was nowhere else to put rubbish.

Beautifully decorated, well furnished and just steps away from shops, pubs, and restaurants. Parking was not a problem for us - we parked just outside the flat on the street and unloaded and by the time we were done it was fine to leave the car on the street until 10am the next morning. We parked on the street between 6pm and 10am every day and outside of these times we parked in the local car parks when we weren’t touring the lakes.
