  • "Just got back from a week in Cabinteely, found the property to be very comfortable, exactly as described."

Everything you needed in the property, garden big enough to let your pooch have a roam and explore or simply watch the goings on if the farm next door! Village was great for walks to near by local routes. We even stumbled upon the village orchard which had an abundance of apples, pears and plums. Property was close enough to main routes to other villages or surrounding towns. Owners were great with communication and easy to reach on the phone as don’t live nearby but nothing was a problem for them. Would return for sure we would! Thanks for a great week!

Thank you for your positive feedback. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Upon arriving the garden, we found had been neglected."

The gate was heavy and stiff and was insecure. Garden shed and table was broken, chairs had been exposed to the elements so even if the weather was nice we wouldn't have been able to sit out in it. Simple things like cobwebs over windows and doors were not a welcome sight upon arrival. Kitchen was nice. Lounge is needing updating sofa was so uncomfortable. A bad use of the limited space in there. Shelves to hold cables was cluttered and to use a 5 socket extension is probably not the best idea! Slugs in the lounge overnight was a big issue. Bathroom was OK, shower was very poor. Kids bedroom was nicely decorated and bunk bed was comfortable. Main bedroom was ok but we found the bed to be uncomfortable. Heating in the cottage was an issue although it was summer the weather was very poor and the house needed heating up only 3 radiators worked. All in all we wouldn't return to this cottage or Brough as the village is lacking in any life at all. Probably the first bad review I've written but with the owners 60 miles away I feel they need to improve the cottage maintenance staff.

I hope potential guests will read the previous reviews which contradict some of the comments below. The garden is not neglected and was last checked 3 weeks ago. It has rained almost constantly since and the weather has been warm, it has not been possible to get a break in the weather to sort the few weeds that have doubtless grown. Unfortunately we cannot keep a team of gardeners on standby for each guest visit. The gate is full size solid wood 5 bar farm gate with a spring loaded jockey wheel to make opening and closing easier and is not insecure it has wire mesh along the bottom to stop dogs getting out. The garden shed was damaged in a storm and is in the process of been replaced and the old one removed. The table had a 6” piece of wood missing from the top and the chairs are plastic which doesn't make them unusable however they are passed their best and we have replaced these. Cobwebs over the outside of the doors and windows can form hour after the cleaners leave, especially at this time of the year in the countryside. The lounge was update 4 years ago most people find the sofa and bed comfortable and have said so in reviews. The shelves behind the armchair and TV are just for cables and internet associated items and nothing else. The 5 socket extension and everything has been recently PAT tested and the whole property has had a full electrical check in the last few months and complies with Sykes requirements and our legal obligations. Slugs are an occasional problem in country properties and can come in on coal and logs we will be checking this out before the next guests come in. The guest informed us of an issue with the heating This was due to a glitch with the internet and was fixed literally 5 minutes after it was reported to us. Sadly the night club in Brough closed years ago and the village is quite lots of people love this about the area maybe you should have done better research before booking Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage, immaculately clean with super comfortable bed and good quality linen."

Quiet area, not a lot going on this time of year but Kirkby Stephen close by with good walks, pubs, restaurants etc. Windermere, Bowness about an hour away. Garden gate really should be fixed or let people know when booking, not 24 hours before. Cottage took some warming up on arrival, maybe good idea when guests are arriving in the middle of winter on a dark night to have had some heating on first.

  • "We enjoyed our stay at the cottage, very clean nice area only problem it wasn't a secure garden the fence wasn't secure at all especially as we had a dog."

The housekeeping bond wasn't paid back promptly I had to chase it up. The local bar The Brough Inn highly recommend lovely food drink, dog friendly staff lovely.

Thank you for your feedback, we always take seriously any comments so that we may improve our service. It is with regret that the 5 bar gate wasn’t repaired in time for your stay but we are waiting on a repairman, our apologies for the inconvenience. Being dog owners ourselves we appreciate how important it is to have a secure garden for the benefit of everyone. However, we feel it must be pointed out that there has been a miscommunication regarding the Housekeeping Bond. The bond was paid in by someone other than the person booking so therefore we did not have the correct bank details to return the bond. We did in fact email twice to request the bank details but heard nothing back. As soon as Sykes contacted us on behalf of the guest, the bond was returned within hours. It is important for future guests to appreciate that the Housekeeping Bond is never withheld with out a good reason and for security reasons a guests bank details are not passed to us by Sykes unless they have a guest permission. • "My Wife and I stayed at this beautiful cottage as part of our 1st anniversary."

The cottage was excellently presented and in a prime location for exploring this part of the country. There was not a single speck of dust anywhere and everything was sparkling clean (this is something which is particularly important in current world circumstances). The bedding was particularly clean, comfortable and high quality. My Wife actually said that she slept better than she normally does at home. Every kitchen utensil and appliance was good quality, and the kitchen itself was very practical. The cottage has clearly been well kept and maintained. Obviously, the owners have high standards of hospitality that are reflected in their cottage. All of this helped to make our 1st anniversary special and memorable. Would recommend without hesitation!

  • "Lovely cottage and brill location."

If you have children there is a farm out the back window so my son was obsessed with watching the tractor and the quad bikes the farmer used to ride around on. Only negative comment is about the water and heating system. The bath used quite a lot of hot water so you couldn’t have it very full before the water started running cold however the shower was always lovely and hot. This did not effect our holiday at all and we would defo book again. The owners have everything you need in the cottage such as towels, tea towels, cleaning sponges, dishwasher tablets etc.

It's in a brilliant location to explore the lakes, the dales and the north pennines. The house itself was perfect, had everything we needed and was a high standard of cleanliness. The garden was secure for our dog to run around in, and they kindly provided an outdoor drinking bowl for him. There's also a lovely walk on the doorstep that we found using an OS map. Would highly recommend and hope to visit again soon!

  • "Our experience of Cabinteely was not great at all."

My husband and I rented it for 28 nights as we needed somewhere to live in May 2021 as we finalize a house purchase in the Lake District. I also work from home and so the second room was a space where I could put a mobile desk and have some quiet. To sum up our stay, we checked out after eight nights of trying to make it work for the following reasons. The internet is abysmal, unreliable, and super slow—download speed of 3Mbs and upload speeds of 0.4Mbs. I had to purchase mobile wifi data at additional expense to be able to keep working. The gate is a real problem, as you will read in other reviews. It requires brute strength to unclip, and then one has to lift to open and close and drag through the gravel, in our case, mud. Photos are deceiving. On the photographs, it looks quaint and well-appointed, and it is comfortably appointed. The challenge, however, is it's tiny, dark, and felt rather gloomy. Granted, we arrived in a cold spell with lots of rain. As such, we relied on the heating. The challenge here is that the owner needs to regulate it for you from his app, so you can only request that and then switch it on or off. Also, the fireplace is old and does not generate much heat nor work adequately. While we have no issues with the bustle of farm life traffic, the noise was a problem at points. The cottage is also across the road from the local ambulance service. Should they be on call at night, you will hear their sirens. Unbeknown to us when booking, a massive 40-foot trailer is parked on the road leading to the farmer's property. The trailer is a permanent fixture (we think the farm uses it for storage) and is in your direct view from the kitchen and, notably, the garden. But, unfortunately, it completely blocks out the country views. It's dreadful and unfortunate. Bed linens and pillows were tired and felt a bit like a hostel bed vs. something a lot more comfortable. We had a terrible sleep all eight nights. Wallpaper coming off the wall, marks on radiators and window sills, toilet seat loose, various aspects of decorating were not up to scratch. On the plus side, while we stayed there, the TV broke and was replaced the next day. The caretaker, Steve, and his wife were very helpful and responsive when we needed something or had a question. The kitchen is well equipped despite being tiny. The whole experience was stressful, so we decided to leave, knowing we had paid upfront. However, following up and citing our reasons, the owners refused to meet us somewhere in the middle and refund even a portion of the unused stay. Instead, they said we should have given them a chance to rectify the issues. Unfortunately, there would be very little they could correct given the list above during our stay, and it would have disturbed the stay had they tried. It certainly left a sour taste in our mouths. As the staycations are on the rise in a post-pandemic world, it is unfortunate that companies like Sykes and owners like Cabinteely are taking advantage of low supply and high demand so when situations like this occur they are completely inflexible. And, unfortunately, the prices do not represent the value. Cabinteely was certainly not worth the 1,800 GBP they asked for the month's stay. However, we did get our 150 GBP good housekeeping deposit back.

This review stands out amongst the other reviews and I trust other readers will see this review for what it is. For the most part it is highly inaccurate exercise in nit picking that has made mountains out of mole hills in an attempt to get a refund. We are not opposed to refunds we recently refunded a guest who had a family member in hospital. Lets be clear about the motivation for this review. The customer made a mistake in choosing a property that was not suited to their needs. After booking it for a month they felt it was not suited to them and tried to make us pay for that mistake by requesting a refund. We refused as it would have been unlikely we would be able to re let those weeks at such short notice. The customer enquired about the Wi-Fi some weeks prior to arrival and did her own research and messaged my wife to say she was happy to go ahead as she felt after her own research it would be fine for her needs. We have had a jockey wheel for the 5 bar gate ready to fit since the start of the lockdown. As the customer has been living in Dubai she may not be aware that we have been unable to leave our county until recently as we live in Lancashire. However the 5 bar gate while needing attention is by no means impossible to open and close. I am disabled and my wife id 5' 1' and neither of us have a problem operating the gate, though admittedly the jockey wheel will make it a lot easier. The cottage IS small the guest knew this when they booked. It IS NOT gloomy its well lit and decorated in light colours as the pictures clearly show. I understand that coming from the sunshine of Dubai to a country village in Cumbria must have been a culture shock. The owner Does Not need to regulate the heating remotely, though we did make some adjustments at the guests request. If the guest had bothered to read the guest hand book they would have found clear instructions on how to operate the heating system. The fire place IS old the cottage was a farm house built in the 1700s originally. The Highlander Multi Fuel Stove is a well known and respected brand and about 15 years old which was recently serviced. Again instructions on how to operate the stove are in the guest handbook. I suspect they never read this. The stove is larger than that required for the size of house as we wanted it to be able to heat hot water as well. The Guests inability to work the stove is user error, the comments about the stove are simply UNTRUE! The NHS Ambulance station we can do nothing about but they are not allowed to use their siren until out of the village. I don't believe this has every been raised as an issue by other guests. Whilst the trailer is not ideal it is outside of our control however to say that it completely blocks the view of the Cumbrian Fells is Again NOT TRUE. The bed linen is from Dunelm and the Duvet and Pillows are Fogerty and hotel standard. Not sure why they had a terrible sleep all eight nights but I suspect it has nothing to do with the mattress. Now the nit picking really starts. Reality check: One tiny corner of wallpaper coming away easily fixed if we had been told. Small marks on radiators where guests have caught the paint with luggage or shoes. Small cup mark on lounge windows sill due to guest leaving a spirit glass on it. Toilet seat loose. First we have heard but easily fixed if we had been told. Not sure what the vague 'Various aspects of décor not up to scratch means' So again I can only assume that this guests expectations are way in excess of what you would expect from a small cottage in Cumbria and other guests have not mentioned the décor. It was full decorated 3 years ago. The Kitchen is small but absolutley in keeping with the size of the cottage. The guest knew this and even visited the cottage prior to arrival the size of the kitchen and lounge can be clearly be seen through the windows. Why has this been raised as an issue now? • "The cottage was very nice and very clean."

It is a nice area with nice walks and a good base for visiting lots of places round. We had to contact the people looking after the cottage with an issue where it said coal was provided, but they were very helpful and said this had been changed and you only had logs now, and this should have been altered on the information. We also arrived just after the time given by Sykes ( 15.00 ) and was told by the man still cleaning we should have been told the arrival time was now 17.00. The only other thing was the gate you open to put the car in, was very difficult to open and we actually cut a finger trying to lift and open it. We did have a lovely week there, fortunately the weather was very nice for us. Brough is a nice little place, not a lot of facilities, the shop is handy and the chip shop is good although only open Friday and Saturday at the present. It was well worth walking to the castle. The cottage was good value for the money and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again

Strange time to holiday with many places still affected by COVID 19. A Visitor Book or local info would have been useful to know what was open in the locality. Nearby Kirkby Stephen has plenty of choice for cafes and small shops. My major disappointment with the cottage is the view in back garden due to large trailer obscuring the view, also the heating system, being controlled remotely by owners was unreliable. Steve the Caretaker was very helpful but we didn’t want to keep disturbing him when it failed again. As of now the pub and ice cream/tea room are open at weekends only, may be worth enquiring direct with establishments if this is important to you before booking.

The garden was enclosed as stated but my dog would have been able to get through the 5 bar gate so Steve the caretaker came over and put wire mesh across it to prevent her getting out, which we really appreciated as it gave us peace of mind, the heater in the lounge wasn’t working so he brought over additional wood and coal for the stove, this was within a few hours of us arriving, so cannot fault the service provided. I would recommend this cottage as it was really clean and well laid out, we sat in the garden looking at the lovely views of the hills of a morning and evenings as there is a table and four chairs in the storage shed. The large gate to the garden for car entrance has gaps between the bars so if you have a small dog it could get out however there was a roll of fine mesh in the storage shed which we tied to the gate which closed any gaps up and was fine. The kitchen had everything you could need and the bed was really comfortable, we will definitely be coming back.

About the location

BROUGH

Kirkby Stephen 4 miles; Appleby-in-Westmorland 8 miles.

Brough is a small town located in the Eden Valley, at the foot of the North Pennines, just four miles north of Kirkby Stephen and eight miles east of Appleby-in-Westmorland. It is a twin village, the southern part, Church Brough, lies on a former Roman road and was the setting for the Norman Brough Castle (once the site of a Roman camp), while the northern area, Market Brough, is sited on a medieval road. The difference in the two villages relates to the functions they once served; Church Brough’s houses stand around a market square decorated with a maypole, while Market Brough boasts a wide and long main street. The village’s claim to fame lies in its 18th-19th century importance as a coaching town for the England-Scotland run, where more than 10 inns catered to the stagecoach trade. A beautiful sleepy backwater, it is surrounded by traditional farm meadows and picturesque pastures and fells. Nearby, the traditional market town of Kirkby Stephen, once home to cotton mills and a large manufacturer of shoes and woollen hats, today hosts a variety of shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs for every taste and budget. Enjoy many excellent walks and cycle routes nearby; explore Penrith, Appleby and the magnificent Howgill Fells, enjoy a drink in Tan Hill, England's highest pub, or take a ride on the Settle-Carlisle railway. A superb location, with the whole of the mystical Lake District National Park and the stunning Yorkshire Dales at your fingertips.
