We took lots of bird food and soon had a large number and variety of birds visiting and it was lovely to sit watching them from the kitchen window. We also saw 3 otters swimming in the canal outside (but only on one occasion, even though we watched and hoped for them to return). Lots of rabbits. The garden was safe for our dogs to wander and the drive is nice and long with two gates, so you are quite a way from the road at the end which is fairly quiet. There is a builders’ yard opposite the cottage but we only saw someone there once and they weren’t noisy. The M6 is quite close but it wasn’t intrusive, even when we were wandering outside. There is a train track over the canal and you hear the trains but they are not intrusive and it is interesting to watch them. I hadn’t realised previously that Tesco use very long trains to move stock. There is a kennels up the road and we heard one or two dogs but again, nothing that bothered us. Once we had been there a day or two the cottage warmed up but I have to admit it felt cold at first and never got hot in the lounge. We had packed lots of jumpers though so wore those and it also made us realise we probably have too much heating on at home. Lovely walks locally and Leighton Moss RSPB site just along the road (top marks for their cafe). We are hoping to return to the cottage in the future as we really enjoyed our time there.

Thanks for your lovely feedback which expresses all the things I love about the cottage myself! If you were to come in the summer you'd notice that the lush growth in the trees and hedges enclose the space - you would barely notice the motorway, which in winter you can see, if you stand at the sink. From the front you get the canal and the view of the lake district. Taking extra jumpers to an old, stone-built cottage is always a good idea! The log fire tops up the heat in the older part of the cottage, and we have multi season quilts on the beds. Would love to welcome you again! Property Owner

The property

A 200-year old detached canalside cottage on the outskirts of Burton-in-Kendal, 7 miles from Kirkby Lonsdale, 12 miles from Kendal, in a secluded, rural and peaceful setting with wonderful views.

Located at historic Burton Wharf almost midway along a 5-mile closed and secluded section of the Lancaster to Kendal Canal, this comfortable and thoughtfully modernised cottage is full of charm and character.

The cottage has a delightful beamed sitting room, a woodburning stove and outstanding views of the surrounding countryside to the Lakeland Fells beyond.

Diverse wildlife can be seen around the canal, and swans and other wildfowl nest beside the wharf, while curlews can often be heard.

The canal towpath on the opposite bank is popular for walking, cycling and exercising dogs.

There is a good dog-friendly pub/restaurant in Burton village a short walk from the property, or guests can enjoy an evening meal on the canalside patio, from which lovely sunsets can frequently be seen.

Lancaster, Morecambe Bay, Silverdale and Arnside are within easy reach, as are Settle, Clapham and Ingleton, Lancaster is 9 miles and Blackpool is just 44 miles away.

A superbly-located property, perfectly placed for visiting the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the Lune Valley.
