  • "We had a fantastic stay at 1 Crookenden Row and would highly recommend it to all future travelers."

The cottage itself is spacious, clean and well maintained. The location to so many local activities (nature walks in the dales and Lake District being particularly exceptional) is also second to none.

  • "Excellent. This was a last minute booking and we were slightly suspicious why this property remained available."

We need not have worried - it was ideal, with good location close to Kirby Lonsdale and handy for Dent and Ingleton. The property has been carefully restored and fitted out from the large downstairs bathroom to the mid-level lounge and kitchen, and the main double room and en-suite upstairs. All was spotlessly clean. There is also handy bike storage at the bottom of the garden. The house is located at the edge of the village with the school playing fields immediately behind. Access to the private carpark is via the side road to the school playing fields. We were slightly confused as to the allocated space until we realised that the sign had disintegrated. Thoroughly enjoyed our few days here.

  • "An absolutely beautiful old cottage, which has been sympathetically renovated to provide superb, comfortable & high quality accommodation."

The building has clearly had a substantial £investment, with high quality appliances & decor throught. It's in a beautiful peaceful location and as there are no street lights to create light pollution, the views of the stars in a dark, dark sky on a clear night were stunning, both from outside the cottage and through the upper bedroom Velux windows when lying on the bed. The Pheasant Inn, just a 2 minute walk away is a lovely traditional old English pub, servicing great beer & food-the home made steak & ale pie was the best I've ever tasted in the UK and the local Pheasant ale got a thumbs up from this real ale loving Scotsman! My only niggle, as another reviewer also pointed out (and being a visiting tourist, I've no real right to complain about it), is the chiming of the church bells across the road, every 15 minutes, 24hrs a day. I understand the historical reasons for it, tradition and the olde worlde charm, but in these days, nobody needs a church bell to tell them the time, especially not at 4am on a warm night when your bedroom window is open! But that's an issue for the local residents to endure rather than a visiting tourist, it certainly didn't spoil my enjoyment of this stunning cottage, which is a credit to the owners.

    1. Bedside lamps 2. Mirror over the wash basin in the downstairs bathroom 3. Towel rings by the wash basins and bath robe hooks in both bathrooms 4. better cleaning in the bathrooms, plus the downstairs loo seat still needed fixing

We are delighted that you really liked the cottage. We have put a lot of effort into making it a relaxing place to stay. Like any holiday let, we work hard to continually maintain our high standards. (The loo seat has just been replaced!) Property Owner

Oddly, there was no cafetiere or coffee pot but a message to Sykes and a prompt visit from the friendly owner, bearing a brand new cafetiere plus coffee mugs had us sorted. We had an excellent week!

  • "First impressions of the property are WOW - it is very well decorated, styled and furnished and the location is superb."

However on closer inspection, for us, a lot of basics are missing, ie - no shaving mirror in either bathroom, the mirrors on the wall in the bathrooms are far too high, the towels provided are too small and not good quality. There are no waste bins in the bedrooms, no hairdryer, no bedside light, no chairs at the unit for make up etc. There is no hand towel in the kitchen, you are only provided with one small tea towel and there is no tea cosy. The sofa and arm chairs in the living room are uncomfortable if you are not very tall. The information regarding the parking is not very clear and we never found P5, local residents told us it was okay to park in the fenced off area opposite No 1. In a previous review from 6 months ago it was stated that the toilet seat in the ground floor bathroom was broken, sadly it is still broken. There is no visitor book for any comments you wish to make and there is no local phone number for contact if there are issues. After paying over £800 for a week's stay we do not think we should be asked to strip beds etc - you are not requested to do this in a hotel.

However, I read in a previous review that the ground floor WC had a loose seat. This is still the case and the 2nd floor WC is also loose now. About 10 days before the holiday I requested that the 2 single beds be zipped together (via Sykes). This was not done. In the 2nd floor shower there is nowhere to put the shampoo/soap at hand level. Everything else was OK and we had a good time.

The cottage was very clean and modern and all the amenities were of a very high standard. We found the sofa to be quite uncomfortable when sitting in the evening watching TV but this didn't take away from a fabulous week. We will definitely return at some point. The walks in and around the area are spectacular and the local pub was great, staff friendly and food excellent. Please note that if you wish to eat in the local pub, The Pheasant it is best to book beforehand.

  • "There are a few issues you should be aware of and I would have expected to have been dealt with as they would have been cleaned on the weekly turnover."

The kitchen rubbish bin did not function with the pedal (my husband has mended this). Both toilet seats are loose especially the en-suite. The shower in the en-suite is not draining away properly and could easily overwhelm the shower tray with a long shower. (The shower trap is quite disgusting and blocked). The Velux skylight it the top bedroom has a broken hinge. The Kitchen drawer below the hob and some of its contents are not clean. There were dirty used tissues under the bed. There are only 3 teaspoons (FYI only).

"Thank you for your comments and for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. Feedback is very important to us as it helps us improve our standards for future guests. Regarding the rubbish bin, this can function without the foot pedal, by lifting the lid, but we thank you for taking the time to repair it. The skylight window was unfortunately damaged by a previous guest, and it is currently taking a while to fix, but we are aware of the issue and aim to resolve this in the near future. With regards to the cleanliness concerns reported, our cleaner went straight into the cottage as soon as we heard of these and rectified any problems as quickly as they could. Thank you once again for your helpful feedback, and we hope to accommodate you again in the future." Property Owner

  • "We were very impressed with the cottage - very clean and well presented, comfy beds, lovely prints of animal heads in the rooms, useful table in the downstairs bathroom - all in a wonderful location, very quiet with access to some interesting and beautiful places."

Just a few points to have made it quite perfect! The soakaway in the upstairs shower was very slow (blocked up with hair); we couldn't find a hairdryer or a cafetière; a mirror over the basin in the downstairs bathroom would have been very useful; we thought the rubbish and recycling boxes could have done with labelling to make it clearer where to put the rubbish. However, these are all small points, easily remedied and our overall impression was of a lovely, welcoming cottage.

  • "The cottage is new and beautifully furnished."

Very high spec. Kitchen boasts all Neff appliances but still lacks some everyday items ie tongs, ladle, potato masher. As said before, mirrors very high, my friend never saw her hair/face all week! But aside these niggles the cottage is perfectly situated for exploring the Dales and the Lakes. Beautiful walks from the doorstep. Casterton is a pretty village, the Pheasant inn excellent for food and the dining room very elegant. The description of the accommodation fails to mention that you share the driveway with Sedberg Prep school so you have the tinies being dropped off in the morning for the Nursery and hear them playing outside. The playing field opposite the cottage is used for rugby games and practice sessions, so the older children run by alongside the cottage garden from the main school up by the church, as this is a shortcut. Also the girls as they play hockey. This takes place between 4-7 so it’s not very peaceful if you’re trying to enjoy a cup of tea and read your book and admire the amazing views from the cottage. Not to mention weekend matches and all the parents congregating!!

  • "We a party of 4, that's 2 couple had an amazing break."

The cottage had every thing you would need and is located well for all areas to get to. The pub in the village is amazing for breakfast and meals but you need to book in advance as gets booked up quickly. Facilities are very good although mirrors in bathrooms need looking at as you can only see in them if your 6 foot and over. a full length mirror in bedrooms may be a good idea. If your sleeping in the top bedroom I would suggest you take ear plugs as the church bells chime every 15 mins and also ring the bells on the hour, this is through the night also. lovely to listen to in the day but kept us awake most the night. We would love to stay here again a perfect base. Well done to the owner's.

We were a party of 4 - 2 in their 80’s who appreciated the ground floor bedroom and enormous bathroom and the perfect location for leisurely drives from the door - 2 a little younger that found hiking in Southern Lakes and Yorkshire Dales easily reached with a comfortable base to come back to in the evening. Almost near perfect accommodation with the exception of a few minor niggles as mentioned by previous reviews but nothing to prevent us from returning. Thank you very much.

Cottage has been well renovated and is very clean and tidy, with comfortable lounge. Kitchen is modern and well equipped, and bathroom has plenty of room and a good shower. Casterton is a lovely quiet village with an excellent pub, the Pheasant, which does great food. • "We have just returned from Crookenden Row and found it a wonderful base to explore the countrysides and the Lakes."

The road to Kendal etc was easy and made the house an excellent base. The directions on the site were slightly confusing - the first left after the church takes you down a lane which isn't near the house. The second left is the entrance to the school grounds where you will see a small gated carpark (no spaces were marked for the house itself but we didn't encounter any problems) and 1 Crookenden Row. The house itself is beautiful, the kitchen has top notch equipment, the beds and linen are superb, the bathrooms were both beautifully fitted and the lounge was really comfortable. The visitors book said that the house had been completed in 2020 and probably because of the COVID pandemic the house hasn't been used much by its owners or guests which shows in a couple of tiny gripes. The crockery etc still had labels on it as did the threshold strips for the carpet and the bathroom cabinet in the upstairs bathroom had a bag of items still attached to the back so it wasn't flush to the wall. The owners probably need to spend a bit of time in their fantastic house to iron some of these things out including putting a mirror under the bathroom light in the downstairs bathroom (the GF commandeered the desk in the downstairs bedroom for her hair/makeup etc as there were just two of us that was fine). The house had a washing machine and unlisted iron and board but no dryer or rack to dry clothes. We were also unsure about recycling so ended up taking ours to Booth's at Kirkby Lonsdale The kitchen could also do with a few more utensils - there are saucepans and a medium frying pan and a casserole pot - but it was missing a cheese grater, slotted/serving spoons, fish slice or tongs to name a few items. That made some simple dishes i.e. sausages or fish quite difficult to cook in fact a fried egg would be impossible. That lack of utensils shouldn't put you off but is worth taking into account when packing up the car.

Well located for adventures in the Yorkshire Dales, the Lakes or even the coast and Silverdale. We had a great time and would happily return. The village of Barbon has an excellent shop/cafe and the local fells you'll have all to yourselves. Perfect.

About the location

KIRKBY LONSDALE

Kendal 9 miles.

An attractive market town, Kirkby Lonsdale is situated in the heart of the Lune Valley, midway between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. The town was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and holds a 13th century Market Charter. Nowadays, Thursday is market day, a perfect opportunity for visitors to explore the variety of distinctive independent shops in the town, or the many 17th and 18th century buildings which still stand. The town was also a finalist for the High Street of the Year Award in 2016. This part of the Lune Valley was a favourite haunt of the artist Turner, and was made famous by Ruskin – his "view" of the valley is still spectacular. The medieval Devil’s Bridge spans the river, and the quiet country lanes are ideal for exploring by car, bike, or even horse. There are three golf courses nearby, as well as tennis, riding, fishing and a variety of riverside and country walks, making the area an ideal location for a break, whatever time of year. When voting Kirkby Lonsdale as the ‘Best Place to Live in The North West’ in 2019, The Sunday Times commented it is “An unbeatable Lake District location, bags of community spirit and one of the cleanest high streets in the country".
