  • "Lovely well equipped cottage where you will be short of nothing."

Spotlessly clean upon arrival with all the towels bed linen etc, included. Good base for exploring Allendale and Northumberland. Although the only pub in Catton across the road doesn't open every night there is plenty of fridge / freezer space to take all your own supplies, and a well equipped kitchen to prepare your own meals if you wish. There were only two of us on this stay so had plenty of room as the cottage is 4 berth so also ideal for families. Would highly recommend and is good value for money.

  • "The sofas springs need replacing."

It was like sitting in a deck chair. We overcame this by using the cushions from the other sofa but it made it bearable not comfortable and made the room look really untidy. The bed was harder than our own but we slept well after the first night. Overall a lovely, well placed cottage which we would snap up the opportunity to revisit if the sofas could be fixed. David was friendly and helpful.

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that the sofas were not comfortable for you and we have had a couple of other guests mention the same, but in the same instance others have found them okay. We will endeavour to rectify this. Property Owner

  • "We found the owner David very helpful prior to and during our stay with places to eat and information re the cottage."

We found the cottage did have a smell during our stay which we put down to the LPG gas and boiler, this was very evident on our arrival and stayed during our stay. It was at times very strong and slightly off putting. On the Monday we awoke to no hot water and no heating as the gas had run out. We sent a message to David who did get back to us and arranged more gas and a check by a plumber. We had been very conservative with the heating too as we had only arrived late on the Friday evening and had been out all day Saturday and Sunday only in the cottage on an evening. We felt being in the trade that both bottles of gas should of been full prior to our stay, which they must not of been. My husband checked both bottles on the Monday and they were both empty. We struggled to use the freezer as it was quite compact with ice As other guests had mentioned the cushions on the settee are very low and you do sink into them, they do need some work. It only dawned on us when we got home and sat on our settee The cottage we feel is more suited to summer renting due to the LPG heating as we are unsure how economical this is. It is a lovely well equipped and clean cottage situated in beautiful surroundings.

  • "Before my arrival, David, the owner, was very helpful with parking at the property with alternatives if needed and other local information."

He came across as a very friendly, polite, genuine man. As it was, I could park at the property easily and had no problems reversing out each day. The pictures of the property are a true reflection of it though I still went "Wow" when I walked in. It was well equipped and everything was easily at hand. I really liked the amount of space for storing your things in the property, especially the kitchen where there were extra empty cupboards to store my own food etc. Looking out the back window watching the birds and rabbits or looking out the front at the hills on the left, with the nearby fields of cows, sheep, horses and flocks of starlings was wonderful. The property was ideal for exploring Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, the North Pennines and the surrounding counties, with some lovely scenic drives. My only regret was that I didn't stay longer than 7 days, so can therefore highly recommend this property.

Thank you very much for your great feedback, very much appreciated. David Property Owner

  • "Dale View is well situated for access to Hadrian’s Wall (the main reason for our stay) and the towns of Hexham and Allendale."

There are many walks from the door, we particularly enjoyed the moors above Splitty Lane with curlews, lapwings, oyster catchers, grouse etc. and the stroll along the river to Allendale. The property kept us warm and comfortable despite disappointing weather. We slept very well, but the very soft cushions on the chair and sofa were a bit of a problem for elderly bones. The off road parking is extremely tight, and reversing on or off is tricky due to poor visibility of oncoming traffic. The property description should be amended since the Crown Inn immediately opposite (for meals and possible alternative parking by arrangement) no longer exists. Overall though a very enjoyable stay and good value.

  • "The cottage was very clean, well equipped, spacious and warm."

There was more than enough storage space in the modern kitchen and it was good to have a full size fridge/freezer. The central heating was very effective and quickly raised the temperature above the set figure, such that we never felt the need to light the log burner despite the return of winter weather (snow on 3 days). In our opinion the sofas were excessively soft and lacking in support and, having a lower back problem, I couldn’t sit comfortably, so either I sat at the kitchen table or rested on the bed. Fortunately the bed was comfortable and sufficiently supportive. The statement on the Sykes Website (“Off road parking for 1 car, plus additional parking in pub car park”) needs clarifying and correcting. The parking space at the cottage is very short and even our small Audi A1 hatchback, parked 2” from the house wall, encroached a few inches over the pavement. The pub is currently a private residence and one cannot park there. We did hear a rumour from a local that it may re-open as a bar in due course so the parking situation may change. An alternative parking space for larger cars is available at the end of the terrace. We had a very good Sunday lunch at the Golden Lion in Allendale (an easy walk with pavement the whole way) and a superb lunch at the Carts Bog Inn at Langley on Tyne, 3 miles away. For the latter there is a somewhat shorter route across fields and a stretch of moorland, partly avoiding the fairly busy Hexham road. The walk by the River Allen in Staward Gorge is easy and very pleasant (start at the National Trust car park, £2 for non-members). The birdwatching was excellent and we saw a few black grouse and grey partridge and large numbers of curlew, lapwing, oystercatcher and golden plover on the upland meadows; we also saw a number of hares. The round walk up the hill from the nearby crossroads (Splitty Lane) is very pleasant and the common at the top is where I saw black grouse. Despite the unusually cold weather we had a very pleasant week and the cottage proved to be an excellent base for exploring the area.

It was a great cottage to stay at. The owner was pleasant and informative when I spoke to him on the phone. Parking was a bit of a squeeze at the property but he did tell us about alternative parking places. Unfortunately the pub over the road is now a private residence, so we had to look elsewhere to eat out. The area is ideal for walks and lovely views.

All the kitchen knives and forks are a bit car boot.

Sorry to hear that you were not happy with your stay. There is real off road parking as there is a drop kerb to allow parking to the front of the cottage alternatively the pub carpark opposite was offered which is also off road parking. You are correct about the games room which I was confused about as there isn't one! I checked the description which mentioned one so I immediately contacted Sykes to correct their mistake. A garden isn't advertised because there isn't one! There is a small patio area to the front of the cottage as shown on the advert. The knives and forks were purchased from a national chain although good sets can be found at car boot sales these days! I hope this helps to resolve your issues and I am sure you that you did enjoy your time in this beautiful county. Property Owner

About the location

CATTON

Allendale 1.5 miles; Hexham 9 miles; Allenheads 9 miles; Newcastle 32 miles.

The village of Catton, with a pub that serves food, is situated less than two miles from the town of Allendale in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town of Allendale was once the centre of a busy lead mining area, and many relics of the mining era remain around the area. Catton is ideally placed for access to Carlisle to the west, Hexham to the east or the Roman Wall just to the north. There are lots of walks and unspoilt villages in the surrounding North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding countryside or travelling further north to the glorious Heritage Coastline.
